The use of contour lines is very important in drawing. Either used to emphasize the illusion of form, or to create a believable surface, the use of contour line can improve the quality of a drawing. Contour Line, as I define it (others may disagree, or take issue) refers to the outline of a form, the lines that describe that form and which are generally visible. For example, the illustration on the left is a contour line drawing of a hand. |

Another form of contour line is the cross-contour line. This type of line does not generally exists visually. These lines could be considered topographical. The two drawings on the left exhibit the use of cross- contour line. |
