What
are MPEG Files?
MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) files are
compressed files that can contain both video and audio
information.
MPEG is the method used to compress the video/audio
files, which otherwise would be very large. MPEG
compression is termed "lossy compression" so
some sacrifice in quality is made. There are several forms of MPEG
files:
- MPEG-1 - found
mainly on the net. The files produced are quite
small when compared to the original un-
compressed
file.
- MPEG-2 -
used in broadcasting and DVD disks. This is high
quality but produces larger files than MPEG-1.
- MP3 -
used for highly compressing audio files. Based on MPEG-1.
- MPEG-4 -
another high compression format similar to MPEG-1 but producing smaller files. Also DivX/AVI ?

Finding
MPEG Files on the Net!
There are
numerous sites on the net that have MPEG files that you
can download. Try using a good Search Engine like YAHOO with the terms MPEG movies, audio
visual, or multimedia. Also
search sites like Yahoo Groups for
multimedia.
NEWSGROUPS are
also a good source of MPEG files. ( READ
THIS for a
explanation of NEWSGROUPS.) Use your Newsreader's search
function to look for newsgroups with multimedia in
the title.
e.g. alt.binaries.multimedia.3-stooges
alt.binaries.multimedia.erotica

What
are split Files?
A normal complete MPEG movie will appear with the following
file name:
3-stooges.mpg (or .mpeg) and could be
quite a large file.Because emails and newsgroup postings are
restricted to less than 1 megabyte file attachments, a
movie of decent quality (which can be up to 10mb per
minute) needs to be split into parts of 500-650 kb.
You can recognise a split MPEG file because it will look
like this:
3-stooges.mpg.045 (or .mpeg.045)
This indicates that it is part 45 of a split MPEG movie
file.
Splitting
a file (not only MPEG files) can be achieved with a
'file-splitting' software program. There are numerous
ones around such as "WINSPLIT"
"HJSPLIT" etc.
"J.A.S." (Just Another Splitter) is
highly recommended. It is available FREE from
the 'Downloads' page. These
same programs can be used to rejoin the split parts for
viewing.

Joining Split
Files!
You will need:
- A file
splitter/joiner program
- Part 001 of the file
(*.mpg.001)
- As many other parts
as possible.
See the next page (Joining Split Files - for more details)
You can view the .001 part without joining but *no other
parts are viewable without first rejoining the file.

What is yEnc? If you download from newsgroups you may have seen a new method of encoding called yEnc. yEnc is not a new type of file but a new more efficient way of encoding binary images (compared to the standard UU encoding). You will need to decode the yEnc files before viewing, joining etc. Check out our Help Files on yEnc here.
