| The West Wing My Way Chapter Fourteen |

| CJ stumbles from the hotel room to Toby's car, having trouble walking because she's not quite awake and small town New Hampshire doesn't have enough streetlights. She unlocks the back door with her eyes closed, and screams as a voice calls out from behind her. "CJ, is that you?" | |||||||||||||||||||
| She spins around, her mind no longer clouded with sleep. She sees no one until a hand waves at her from inside the car next to Toby's. It's Josh's assistant, Donna. "Jesus, Donna, you scared me!" Donna scoots over to the passenger side and leans out the open window to grin at CJ. "I'm sorry. You scared me, too. Is everything all right?" | |||||||||||||||||||
| CJ angrily throws her pillow into Toby's car and leans against it to talk to Donna. "No, everything is not all right. Andrea showed up early, and didn't know that Toby and I were sharing a room. You can imagine her reaction when she walked into her husband's hotel room to find another woman wrapped around her man!" Donna nods, then gasps. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Wait, Andrea walked in on you and Toby..." CJ shakes her head and laughs. "God, no. Why does everyone think that? Toby and I were sleeping. Nothing is happening between us. But, because she didn't know I was in New Hampshire, she assumed the worst. And I don't think I said anything in there to make her think any differently." | |||||||||||||||||||

| The next few years are hard on both CJ and Toby. She tries to move on, dating occasionally, but no relationship lasts because she can't forget the way Toby's arms felt around her and the way his mouth felt on hers beside her pool. She takes a job working at a public relations firm, Triton Day, and starts making big bucks in the film industry. Her heart is in politics, though, and she works with Emily's List on the side. |

| Toby works on things with Andrea, trying to keep his marriage from failing like his parents' marriage did. Andrea makes it easy, of course, because a divorce would not look good on her record. She is a politician, after all. But, it's a loveless marriage, and Toby can't forget the way CJ smells. | |||||||||||||||||||
| They keep their word. No matter how hard things get, they do not try to get in touch. CJ doesn't call Toby because she doesn't want to be responsible for the breakup of his marriage, and Toby doesn't call CJ because he knows that he would leave his wife for her and doesn't want to make CJ feels responsible for the breakup of his marriage. They don't see each other again until, ten years after they parted ways, their eyes meet across a crowded ballroom in Washington, DC.... | |||||||||||||||||||
