The West Wing My Way
Chapter Fifteen
"So, CJ, why didn't you set the record straight?" CJ looks at Josh's assistant, Donna, and thinks before answering her question.
"Toby and I go way back, Donna. We tell people we've only known each other for a few years, but we've been friends of some sort for almost twenty years. We met at a fundraiser in Georgetown. Andrea was running a campaign for something; I don't remember what. I was at his wedding. Toby and I were very close. We sent letters and had dinner when we could, and Andrea was jealous. Three years after they were married, Andrea asked Toby to move out. He moved across the country to stay with me, and that made Andrea even more suspicious. When Toby left to go back to her, I cut off contact with him because it was the best thing to do for his marriage. We didn't talk for ten years, and I will never forgive Andrea for that. I am so sick of explaining myself to her! I didn't try to explain this morning because there was nothing to explain, and there never will be!" Donna nods.
"I guess I understand that. Was she mad?" CJ looks at Donna for a moment, wondering if she can really be that naive. She can tell that Donna isn't asking the question because she doesn't know the answer, but because she thinks CJ needs to let off some steam. "yeah, she was angry, but not as angry as I am right now. She doesn't bother to contact Toby for a week--I've been here a week--and expects him to tell her every little detail. I don't know why Toby lets her treat him like that! He doesn't deserve it!"
CJ stares off into space for a moment, and Donna can tell that CJ cares more for Toby than CJ herself even realizes. Donna decides to give her a break. She clears her throat and hands CJ a blanket through the window. "It gets really stuffy in the car without the windows cracked, and then it gets a little chilly. Sleep well, CJ. I'm sure everything will be fine." CJ nods and sees Donna's actions for what they are: an escape from a trying conversation. "Thanks, Donna. Goodnight."
** **
CJ is in Washington at a fundraiser for Senator John Hoynes, representing Emily's List. Toby is at the fundraiser with Andrea, who is only there for the publicity and to appear supportive of a fellow Democrat--which, of course, she isn't, because Andrea Wyatt only supports those who have something to give her.
CJ is dancing with the esteemed Senator when she feels the familiar tingle she used to get when she and Toby were in the same room. She scans the room over the Senator's shoulder, and sees Toby staring at her from his place beside his wife. "Would you excuse me, Senator?"
"The Senator reluctantly nods his head and lets his hands fall from CJ's waist. She walks across the room with her head held high, trying to ignore her heart racing and its urging her to run into Toby's arms. "Hello, Toby...Andrea." Andrea nods politely, but she refuses to meet CJ's eyes.
"CJ, you look wonderful! It's so great to see you! How've you been? What have you been up to?" Toby's greeting is almost exactly the way CJ would have greeted him if the tables were turned. "Thank you, Toby. It's nice to see you, too. I've been doing PR work, in film of all things. I'm doing well, though. How 'bout you?" Toby steps away from Andi and holds up his arm for CJ. "Come walk with me. We've got a LOT of catching up to do!"
