Chapter Sixteen |

"CJ, you've got to get up!" CJ opens her eyes and stares at Donna, who's standing right outside Toby's car. "Donna, what time is it?" Josh's assistant opens the car door. "It's five o'clock. Josh said you could use his bathroom to get read. You can ride in with me." CJ slides out of Toby's backseat and groans as her back pops in protest. There was a time when CJ could sleep anywhere without pain, but right now is not one of those times. "Thanks, Donna." |

Donna is waiting on the steps outside Josh's door when CJ is ready for work. She is staring into space when CJ walks up behind her. "Hey, Donna, you ready?" Donna stands up and smoothes the wrinkles from her skirt. "Oh, CJ! Yeah, let's go. We can stop for breakfast on the way. There's this cute little diner with the best homemade doughnuts!" CJ laughs. "I can't remember the last time I let myself have a doughnut!" Donna shrugs. "They serve eggs and stuff, too. We have time to sit and eat. We don't have to be at work for another hour and a half." |

"Sounds good, Donna. I'll treat." |

"So, Toby, tell me how you've been." Toby smiles as he guides CJ through a crowd of supporters. "Great! Andi and I are having a baby!" CJ stops walking beside Toby, causing him to stop as well. "Andrea's pregnant?" Toby shakes his head.
"No. But she wants to try to have a baby. I can't wait!" CJ forces a smile and bites her tongue. All Toby needs is for her to start talking about how Andrea only wants a baby because it would be good publicity. Instead, she holds out her hand to shakes Toby's. "Congratulations! You'll be a great father, Toby." Toby grins. "Thanks. Andi's excited. We've both stopped drinking, and I've given up cigars. And, since I just quit working for the Congressman, I've been fixing up the nursery." |

CJ's heart breaks for her friend. He's stuck in a bad marriage, that much she can tell from the stories she's heard and from the way Andrea and Toby look together, but he's trying so hard to make it work. And now Andrea has talked him into having a child.
"Toby, that's really great! I hope things work out for you! But, you know, I'm here to work so I'd better go mingle. It was so great seeing you!" CJ walks away before Toby can stop her, and she heads directly to the ladies' room. She splashes cold water on her face to fight back the tears in her eyes. She turns to grab a towel and bumps into Andrea Wyatt. |
