The West Wing My Way
Chapter Thirteen
"What the hell is going on, Toby?" Toby sits up as quickly as his wife slams the door to his hotel room, startling CJ out of her deep sleep. "How long has this been going on, Toby?"  Toby fumbles for a response, still not completely awake. "Andi, this isn't what it looks like. CJ needed--" Andi holds up her hand, motioning for Toby to stop talking.
"Toby, honestly, I don't care what CJ needed. you are MARRIED--to ME--if I remember correctly. Her needs don't concern you." CJ stands up and grabs her pillow. "I'm gonna...go." She grabs Toby's keys off the nightstand and heads for the door. Andi grabs her arm and stops her before CJ can get the door open.
"Claudia, I think you should stay for this. I deserve an explanation, even if I know I'm not going to believe it." CJ glares at her best friend's wife. "Andrea, I don't owe you anything. I have been here for a week, and the only reason you didn't know before now is because you've been off living your life and ignoring Toby. If anyone has any explaining to do, it's your! And frankly, I don't want to hear it!" CJ angrily shakes Andi's hand off her arm and walks out the door, slamming it behind her. Andi turns and glares at Toby. "Start talking."

CJ drives Toby to meete his flight the morning after their unexpected kiss. They'd spent the evening talking--well, Toby talked, CJ listened--about all the changes Toby was going to make in his relationship with Andi. CJ knows that Toby isn't really the problem in the relationship, and it breaks her heart to send him back to his wife when she knows that no matter how much Toby changes, his marriage will never be the perfect union he deserves.
She wants to tell him that; she wants to beg him not to go back to Andi. She doesn't say anything because, while she thinks a good friend would warn another friend about something like this, she isn't completely sure if she wants to beg him not to go for purely selfish reasons. Instead, she walks him to his gate and sits next to him while he waits for his plane to board.
"CJ, I just want to thank you for letting me come out here. Being away really helped, and I wouldn't have taken the job out here if it wasn't for you. So, thank you." CJ takes Toby's hand in hers, trying to ignore the pain she feels as she realizes she won't be able to hold his hand like this after she says what's on her mind.
"Toby, I'm glad you and Andrea worked through your problems. I hope you'll be happy. But, I don't think having me as a confidante is going to help you. I think we should take a break for a while. No more late night phone calls and pages of letters. Focus on your wife. You two have enough problems. She doesn't need to feel insecure about me. "Toby sits beside CJ, stunned at what his best friend has just said. His flight is called over the intercom before he has a chance to respond. CJ stands up and holds out his bag for him.
"CJ, you don't have to--" Sje can't bear to let him finish his though. CJ would do anything Toby asks, and it would hurt too much to stay in touch. "Toby, go home to your wife. Look me up if things settle down." She gives him a little push towards his gate, but he stops and pulls her into a hug. "Thank you, CJ. And I promise, when things calm down, you'll be my first phone call. I'll miss you!"
Toby dashes off to catch his flight. CJ's glad he didn't turn to look back. If he had, he would have seen his best friend in tears. "Goodbye, Toby." She wipes her eyes and walks slowly back to her car.
