All That Matters
Chapter Three
The conversation over dinner is a welcome change from Toby's and Cj's daily conversations at work. Instead of focusing on faceless people as it usual in the daily life inside the White House, the conversation with the Bartlets centers around people they know. They talk, of course, about Josh and Donna finally getting together, and abotu Leo agreeing to become the Vice Presidential nominee. When dessert arrives, Jed and Abbey start questioning Toby and CJ about the events leading up to their marriage. "Claudia Jean, this has been bugging me since you tried to leave. What mistake could you possibly have made that would cause you to lose your things and get Toby to open up about his feelings?"
CJ purses her lips and closes her eyes and she tries to think of a way to answer the President's question without getting fired. When she tells him that she thought she was the leak, it won't matter that she wasn't. The only thing that will matter is the fact that she thought she was capable of revealing government secrets. The President would have no choice but to fire her, if only to save her from truly screwing up. Toby answers before his wife can dig herself into a hole. "Mr. President, it doesn't matter why I asked her to marry me. She didn't do what she thought she did, so everything's fine. There are only three people who know the circumstances under which CJ and I got married, and for her sake, I'd like to keep it that way. The only thing that mattes now is that we're together and we're happy." Jed starts to protest, but Abbey takes his hand in hers to silence him.
"That's fine, Toby, as long as CJ's okay. When are you going public?" CJ smiles. Leave it to the Bartlets to ask all of the questions they don't have answers to. "Toby and I haven't really talked about it. After seeing your reaction today, I don't think there's anyway we can avoid out friends having the same reaction." Abbey nods and looks at her husband. "I was thinking of a coming out party, tomorrow night, here in the White House. We can invite all of your friends and tell them all at once. Maybe their reaction won't be as bad in a group." CJ looks skeptical, but she really sees no other way to annouce their marriage. She nods. "That sounds great," Toby responds. "Thanks you, ma'am.
Abbey rubs her hands together in excitement. "Great! Now, you two don't have to worry about anything; I'll handle all the details. I won't tell anyone the reason for the party, but I'll make it very clear to everyone invited that this is a celebration they must not miss. All you have to do is show up! And as for the whole 'never been on a date' thing, welcome to the end of your first double-date." The President stands as his wife finishes talking. "Tomorrow's gonna be a busy day, so you two should get outta here. Go home and celebrate. I don't want to see either of you here before eight tomorrow. Consider it a wedding present." Toby and CJ stand. "Thank you, Mr. President. Goodnight ma'am." Toby trakes CJ's hand in his and they walk from the Residence hand-in-hand. CJ feels as if a weight has been lifted from her shoulders. Having Abbey and the President on her side makes her feel that maybe, just maybe, everything will be all right.
