All That Matters
Chapter Two
CJ clears her throat and looks at Toby as she answers the First Lady's question. "Yes, ma'am. Toby and I have finally gotten, um, together." Dr. Bartlet smiles and looks at her husband, who's also smiling. "Well," the President says, "it's about time!" Abbet nods. "So, you two have finally sucked it up and confessed your feelings? You're dating?" Toby shakes his head. "No, ma'am. CJ and I aren't dating." Abbey looks confused. "But, CJ said you two were together." Toby nods, but it's CJ who sets the record straight, all of her hopes for a good reaction out the windown because of the way the conversation progressed. "Ma'am, Mr. President, Toby and I have confessed our true feelings, but we're not dating. Toby and I are married."
Abbey smiles and CJ feels relieved, thinking that maybe the would get a good reaction when the news of their marriage spreads, after all. That is, until Dr. Bartlet speaks. "Congratulations. How long have you two been together?" Toby scratches his head as he mumbles, "Two days." The President sits up straight. "Two days! You've been dating two days and you're already married?!" CJ looks at Toby as she answers, not wanting to see the look on her President's face. "Well, we actually...Oh my God, Toby! We haven't been on a proper day!" This is just too much for the President to handle. He stands up and towers over the newly weds, who are sitting on the couch. Bartlet looks about as angry as CJ has ever seen him, and Toby looks just as angry. "Are you trying to bring scandal to my White House? What the hell were you two thinking getting married after two days together...and without ever being on a date?!"
Toby starts to stand, too, but CJ puts a hand on his arm to stop him. She just got married to this man; she doesn't want the Secret Service to kill him on their wedding day! "Actually, sir, this is only our second day together and our first as man and wife. I was in a bad place yesterday. I had made a huge mistake and thought that I was going to lose everything. Toby was right by my side. He asked me to marry him. I thought at first that it was just so I didn't lose my things, but Toby told me he loved me, and I love him. We have been in love with each other since the day we met, but we were both too scared to admit it. I expected people to react badly to the news, but not you and Mrs. Bartlet. You of all people should know what it feels like to find your soulmate.  I though you at least would be happy for us! But right now, I honestly don't care that you're not. Toby and I know what we're doing. We're in love, and right now that's all that matters. You are the only people who know, and frankly, I would like to keep it that way. I would appreciate it if you would keep this to yourselves, because' it's nobody's damn buisness anyway!"
Without looking at the President's reaction, CJ grabs Toby's hand and leads him to the door. She gets it open before Dr. Bartlet can react. "CJ, Toby, wait!" CJ turns to look at the older woman, who is now standing in front of her husband. "You're right...the only thing that matters is that you two are in love. Congratulations, really. It was just a shock to hear that everything happened so quickly. I really am happy for you. Please, come back in and join us for a late dinner." Toby pulls CJ away from the door and they walk into the dining room with the Bartlets.
