Affidavit: "Later in 1992, as the civil war in the former Yugoslavia became increasingly topical, I started to work primarily on operations in Serbia. During this time, I became aquainted with Dr. Nicholas Bernard Frank Fishwick, born 1958, the MI6 officer who at the time was in charge of planning Balkan operations. During one meeting with Dr. Fishwick, he casually showed me a three-page document that on closer inspection turned out to be an outline plan to assassinate the Serbian leader President Slobodan Milosevic�. Fishwick had annotated that the document be circulated to the following senior MI6 officers: Maurice Kendwrick-Piercey, then head of the Balkan operations, John Ridde, then the senior security officer for Balkan operations, the SAS liaison officer to MI6 (designation MODA/SO, but I have forgotten his name), the head of the Eastern European Controllerate (then Richard Fletcher) and finally Alan Petty, the personal secretary to the then chief of MI6, Colin McColl. This plan contained a political justification for the assassination of Milosevic, followed by three outline proposals on how to achieve this objective. I firmly believe that the third of these scenarios contained information that could be useful in establishing the causes of death of Henri Paul, the Princess of Wales, and Dodi Al Fayed. This third scenario suggested that Milosevic could be assassinated by causing his personal limosine to crash. Dr. Fishwick proposed to arrange the crash in a tunnel, because the proximity of concrete close to the road would ensure that the crash would be sufficiently violent to cause death or serious injury, and would also reduce the possibility that there might be independent, casual witnesses. Dr. Fishwick suggested that one way to cause the crash might be to disorientate the chauffeur using a strobe flash gun, a device which is occasionally deployed by special forces to, for example, disorientate helicopter pilots or terrorists, and about which MI6 officers are briefed about during their training. In short, this scenario bore remarkable similarities to the circumstances and witness accounts of the crash that killed the Princess of Wales, Dodi Al Fayed, and Henri Paul. I firmly believe this account should be yielded by MI6 to the Judge investigating these deaths, and would provide further leads that he could follow."

Arrested for showing a six-page outline for his memoirs to Australian publisher. Convicted for violating the Official Secrets Act, and sentenced to twelve months in maximum-security prison. He was paroled after six months.

One month prior to his appointment to testify before Judge Herve Stephan's inquest into the deaths, Tomlinson was arrested in Paris by the French intelligence agency, DST. He explainsed in his affidavit: "Although I have no record of violent conduct I was arrested with such ferocity and at gunpoint that I received a broken rib. I was taken to the headquarters of the DST and interrogated for 38 hours. Despite my repeated requests, I was never given any justification for the arrest and was not shown the arrest warrant. Even though I was released without charge, the DST confiscated from me my computer and Psion organizer."

At this time, Tomlinson officially sought political asylum in Swizterland, declaring that no other nation would protect him from arrest by the British secret police.

One week later in New Zealand, Tomlinson was forced to exit off a Quantas airliner bound for Australia (a part of the British Empire), where he was scheduled for a television network interview. Within one hour of his return to his hotel room, he was arrested by New Zealand police and the New Zealand Secret Intelligence Service (NZSIS--New Zealand is also a part of the British Empire.). He was held under arrest and searched for three hours, and his remaining computer equipment was confiscated.

Note that Princess Diana was worth more dead than alive, while the President of Serbia was worth more alive than dead, since this would justify many billions of dollars in warfare expenditures for British and American military interests. Presidents Muammar Qaddafi and Saddam Hussein, likewise, were worth more alive than dead, with British and/or American military forces bending over backwards to avoid injuring them during warfare.

Has there been a cover-up of Nixonian proportions by Prince Charles? And if so, of what exactly?

The current royal crisis has been approached by the media so far in the manner of a rather bonkers game of Cluedo - "It was the under-butler in the pantry with the tape-recorder!"

"No, no, it was the Prince of Wales on the backstairs with the specimen bottle!"

But if a member of the royal family did abuse his influence to get an embarrassing trial stopped - the underlying allegation in all this - then he is clearly unfit to be king.

A spirit of calm inquiry may now be needed to dissect an issue with the makings of a constitutional crisis. And certainly, as Sherlock Holmes would say, this is a three-pipe problem.

The first question is this. Who got the Old Bailey theft trial, of Paul Burrell, the late Diana's apparently bisexual butler, stopped so jarringly in midstream?

The simple answer is the trial judge, Mrs Justice Rafferty. The slightly less obvious answer is the attorney general, Peter Goldsmith. Despite the government's strenuous efforts to distance itself from this interference with the course of justice, he conceded to the Lords last week that he had personally been consulted.

But the ultimate answer is Prince Charles. He took the initiative, telling prosecutors that his mother the Queen now remembered Burrell had said something about keeping papers safe which pointed to his innocence.

As the Crown said: "The Prince of Wales... thought that the information about the meeting might be relevant."

The proper place for claims of new evidence to be tested is in open court, however, not in a backstairs deal.

The second question is: did Charles stand to benefit from the trial being aborted? The answer is yes.

The defence was about to begin. Burrell was about to take the stand. The defence strategy of his counsel Lord Carlile was going to be both hideously embarrassing and likely to endanger the standing of the monarchy.

Carlile was expected to call Hasnat Khan, who had been having an affair with Diana. He would testify that, having been smuggled into Clock Court, he knew there were no cameras in that part of Kensington Palace. So others with inside knowledge knew where to sneak in.

The defence had already won an admission from the Crown that the missing contents of Diana's box - the really sensitive part of the case - were of "strong interest" to others.

The strategy was thus going to be to suggest that they had been stolen by a mafia of gay royal servants. The reason? Because the box's contents contained claims of homosexual rape which Charles' office had covered up.

The rape had been allegedly committed by one of Charles' aides, and was never reported to the police when allegations came to light in 1996, as Charles now concedes.

While increasingly frantic lawyers' letters have subsequently sought to conceal the name of Charles' aide from the general public, virtually every journalist in London was aware of it by yesterday, and the nature of the reported relationship between the two men.

Public disclosure of his name by Burrell under privilege in the witness box could have been profoundly alarming for the Prince of Wales.

The third question revolves around a classic element in many detective stories - the case of the missing tape. Here, there is a peculiar discrepancy in Charles' version of events, which any independent inquiry should certainly begin by probing.

Charles' office took the initiative in suggesting to the Guardian last week that the tape did not exist - or, at any rate, no longer existed. "It has been suggested that the... allegation was secretly recorded by the late Princess of Wales in 1996. At no stage have the police produced any such tape, or any witness who has heard such a tape, and we have no evidence of the existence of any such tape." Why is Charles trying to persuade the media of something which cannot possibly be true? For the evidence of the tape's existence is now overwhelming.

George Smith, the former footman and Falklands veteran who told police he was the victim of the alleged rape, confirmed at the weekend that he was taped by Diana twice in the mid-90s, telling his story.

Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Diana's sister, testified on oath during the butler's trial about the tape's existence. She and Burrell had discovered it together in 1997, in a locked box, after finding a hidden key. She told the Old Bailey that it was a "tape by an employee".

Burrell had taken the tape, inside the box, "for safekeeping", along with a ring from Diana's lover James Hewitt, and letters from Prince Philip. The last she saw of the tape, she testified, was of Burrell disappearing into the Kensington Palace lift with the box, in the direction of the butler's pantry.

Later, she said, she recovered the box, but lost the key. Police eventually investigating the rape allegation broke the box open. But its contents were gone.

Sources close to Burrell's legal team confirm that he took the tape. "Burrell knew what was on it," one said. "Diana had told him."

But Burrell has remained extremely coy as to what became of it. Did he give it to the Queen? If so, neither party has admitted it. Did he give it to Charles? Although he and the Prince of Wales arranged to have a private meeting before the trial commenced, it was apparently cancelled because Charles fell off his horse. There is no evidence that they rescheduled this backstairs meeting.

And yet this tape, according to George Smith, contains material any member of the royal family would desperately want to destroy.

So, is it time to call in Sherlock Holmes? Many will think so.

Exclusive: confessions of a secret agent turned terrorist

KEVIN Fulton is very clear about where the orders were coming from. 'I was told that this was sanctioned right at the top,' he says, sipping a Pepsi in the bar of a Glasgow hotel. 'I was told 'there'll be no medals for this, and no recognition, but this goes the whole way to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister knows what you are doing.' This was 1980, and if Margaret Thatcher knew about the activities of military intelligence agents such as Fulton, then she was also aware her own military officers were planning to infiltrate British soldiers as 'moles' into the IRA. These moles were ordered by their handlers to carry out terrorist crimes in order to keep their cover within the Provos so they could feed information on other leading republicans back to security forces.

For almost two years the Sunday Herald has been investigating the activities of the FRU -- the Force Research Unit, an ultra-secret wing of British military intelligence. Fulton worked for the FRU for much of his career as an IRA mole. This unit, which has been under investigation by Scotland Yard commissioner Sir John Stevens for more than a decade, was involved in the murder of civilians in Northern Ireland.

Nicholas Benwell, a detective sergeant formerly attached to the Stevens Inquiry, says the Scotland Yard team came to one conclusion: that military intelligence was colluding with terrorists to help them kill so-called 'legitimate targets' such as active republicans. FRU handlers passed documents and photographs to their agents operating within paramilitary groups detailing targets' movements and the whereabouts of their homes. Pictures were also handed over to help gunmen identify their victims. But there was a problem. The targeting was far from professional and many of the victims of these government-backed hit squads were innocent civilians.

In 1989 the FRU passed information to the UDA which the loyalist gang used to murder the Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane, who was shot dead in front of his wife and children. Last week, Prime Minister Tony Blair pledged that the Government was determined to uncover the truth about Finucane's murder. The Canadian judge Peter Cory who was called in by the government to investigate the case is expected to recommend a public inquiry. The Irish government is also pressing for an inquiry of its own.

So who was the overall controller of the FRU with its 'licence to kill' republicans? Until now it seemed that responsibility for the activities of the FRU rested on the shoulders of one man -- Brigadier Gordon Kerr, the Scottish officer who led the unit and is now the British military attach? to Beijing. A two-part BBC Panorama programme, concluding tonight, much of it based on the Sunday Herald's previous investigations, puts Kerr squarely in the frame.

But if Fulton's claims are correct, then Kerr, soon to be questioned by the Stevens team, was just one link in a chain of command which went all the way to the cabinet and the Prime Minister. As Fulton says: 'Kerr was just following orders. Soldiers don't make up the rules, they just do as they're told.'

Fulton's story begins in 1979. He was 19, and had just enlisted in the First Battalion Royal Irish Rangers. Kevin Fulton isn't his real name, but a pseudonym used to protect his identity since turning whistle-blower on the activities of the British military, the RUC and the security services in Ulster's 'dirty war'. His work for military intelligence has been confirmed by FRU sources.

Fulton's military file quickly found its way onto the desks of the Intelligence Corps, the regiment which includes the FRU. It made interesting reading. Here was a Catholic from Newry, in the heart of a republican strong-hold, who seemed a loyal servant of the Crown. After only a few weeks in the army, Fulton's staff sergeant approached him. 'I was told that some guys from military intelligence wanted to speak to me,' Fulton says. 'They asked me if I'd like to work for them and I said 'no' as I wanted to remain in uniform. They told me to think about the offer. They added that I shouldn't tell anyone about the visit and that if I was asked I should say they were from a military welfare group. The next time we met they asked me if I'd go to Newry with them. We looked through pictures of local characters and I put names to faces, saying if they had a republican background or not.'

The two FRU officers, one of whom was Scottish, continued to try and persuade him to work with them. 'They confessed they needed guys like me -- Catholics from that part of Northern Ireland -- in order to get inside the Provos,' he says.

Fulton was still unsure, so the FRU asked him if he could help recruit a Catholic civilian in Newry who might be willing to go inside the IRA. He did. It was an old friend, who he refers to as Agent Washington. He and Fulton accompanied FRU members to the army training camp at Ballykinlar in County Down. 'He was given weapons training. They taught him how to fire an M16, AK-47s, Remington wingmaster shotguns, Sterling sub-machine guns and a Browning 9mm,' says Fulton. 'Remember that this was a civilian going inside the IRA.'

Fulton finally decided he'd work with military intelligence. In 1981, he was officially given a compassionate discharge from his regiment on the fictitious grounds that his father was seriously ill. He also received papers claiming he'd been thrown out for republican sympathies -- a great document to present to the IRA men he would soon befriend.

From then until 1995, Fulton remained on full army pay as he worked his way through the ranks of the IRA. He began drinking in republican bars in Dundalk and socialising with senior IRA officers, including Patrick Joseph Blair, who the Sunday Herald named this year as one of the men behind the Omagh bombing. Blair later went on to became Fulton's 'mentor'.

Not long after his discharge, he told one prominent IRA man that he wanted to join the organisation. He was taken to a room above a bar and confronted by a number of men in balaclavas. 'I'd told them that I'd been kicked out of the army and they started shouting at me saying 'So you're telling us you'd shoot your f***ing comrades if you saw them in Crossmaglen?' I said 'Yes, of course'.

'They started calling me a tout (republican slang for an informer) and saying they were going to shoot me. Eventually, they dragged me outside. They told me to kneel and say the Act of Contrition. I heard a huge bang behind me. It was them banging a big bit of wood on the ground to pretend to be a gunshot. They were testing me. They told me to come back when I was ready.

'My handlers thought this was great. I offered my services to the IRA saying I'd help carry out robberies to fund them. This was all with the knowledge of my handlers in the FRU. I made pals with a prominent Sinn Fein councillor in Newry who suggested I hijack a lorry carrying TVs. I knew that this would give me credibility, so that's what I did. I took a lorry in Belfast with about ?100,000 of TVs inside.'

Fulton was later arrested for the robbery and served a year in the Crumlin Road prison in Belfast. Because of his republican connections he was denied the usual privileges of an ODC -- an ordinary decent criminal. This also gave him additional credibility with the IRA.

Fulton was released in 1986 and inducted straight into the IRA. 'My handlers told me to do anything to win their confidence. That's what I did. My brief was that if I got into a situation where I couldn't get to my handlers but I had to break the law, I was to try not to take a life. I was to shoot high or blow up a bomb prematurely. But that isn't always possible. If I f***ed up all the time, then the IRA would shoot me. Don't forget I also ran the risk of getting shot by the army and the police. I mixed explosive and I helped develop new types of bombs. I moved weapons. If you ask me, 'Did I kill anyone?' then I will say 'no'. But if you ask me if the materials I handled killed anyone, then I will have to say that some of the things I helped develop did kill.

'I reiterate, my handlers knew everything I did. I was never told not to do something that was discussed. How can you pretend to be a terrorist and not act like one? You can't. You've got to do what they do. The people I was with were hard-hitters. They did a lot of murders. If I couldn't be any good to them, then I was no use to the army either. I had to do what the man standing next to me did.'

This took an especially dark turn when Fulton became a member of the IRA's 'internal security squad' -- also know as the 'torture unit' -- which interrogated and executed suspected informers. 'I remember once when a guy had been questioned for three days in a safe-house in the Republic,' says Fulton. 'They eventually rolled out a sheet of plastic and decided we were going to 'nut' him. We drew straws to decide on who would do the shooting. Luckily, I didn't draw the short straw.'

In 1992, Fulton told his handlers -- this time in both the FRU and MI5, that his IRA mentor Blair was planning to use a horizontally-fired mortar for an attack on the police. His handlers did nothing. Within days, Blair fired the device at an armoured RUC Land Rover in Newry, in the process killing policewoman Colleen McMurray. Another RUC officer lost both his legs.

Fulton then travelled to the US and helped develop light-sensitive bombs, activated by photographic flashes, to overcome the problem of IRA remote-control devices having their detonation signal jammed by army radio units.

'I broke the law seven days a week and my handlers knew that. They knew that I was making bombs and giving them to other members of the IRA and they did nothing about it. If everything I touched turned to shit then I would have been dead. The idea was that the only way to beat the enemy was to penetrate the enemy and be the enemy. At the time I'd no problem with this way of thinking.'

The claim that the cabinet and Thatcher knew of these types of operations is startling. Thatcher's office has refused to comment on Fulton's claims. It is known, though, that intelligence supplied by other British army moles inside the republican movement was being read at cabinet level. One such mole, Willie Carlin, was flown out of Northern Ireland in Thatcher's Prime Ministerial jet in 1985 after his cover was blown. As chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, which met weekly at Number 10, Thatcher was kept informed of FRU activities. Whether this ran to the day-to-day details of agent-handling is not known. Thatcher did grant the FRU extra funding to recruit agents in the wake of the IRA's Remembrance Day bombing in Enniskillen.

Fulton split with both the IRA and military intelligence in the mid-1990s after a number of terrorist operations went disastrously wrong. Once his handlers told him to get a mobile phone and a car for a planned hit in 1994 on a senior RUC officer in Belfast. The IRA team was arrested on its way to carry out the murder.

Fulton believes his handlers thought he had outlived his usefulness and deliberately linked him to the operation before tipping off the police about the plan. By then, the army had secured a far more highly-placed mole within the IRA -- a man still active and codenamed Stakeknife. Fulton is sure that he was compromised, so the IRA would kill him and believe they were free of informers, allowing Stakeknife to pass top-grade information to the military without risk of being detected. 'If I was dead that would have been the end of it,' he says. 'There would have been no embarrassment to the army.'

From 1995 until now Fulton has been fighting the MoD -- demanding they clear his criminal record, give him a new identity, a relocation package and provide a military pension. 'If they hadn't screwed me, then I wouldn't be screwing them now,' he says. 'If the IRA ever find me I'm dead. I accept I'm a marked man, but I intend to take everyone down with me who was in on this -- no matter how high up the stink goes.'

British Army helped IRA terrorists commit murder

Police and Army officers conspired to murder republicans in Northern Ireland over 10 years, the longest-running criminal inquiry in UK history will conclude this week.

The report by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens will reveal that a secret army intelligence unit and members of the RUC Special Branch assisted loyalist hitmen to assassinate republicans during the Eighties. It will make more than 20 recommendations to improve the accountability of the police and Army.

However, there is growing criticism that only a tiny minority of his findings will be made public when the report is unveiled on Thursday. Human rights campaigners in Belfast say only 15 pages of the 3,000-page report will be included in the public document.

Paul Mageean, of the Belfast-based Committee on the Administration of Human Rights, said: "This is an absolute scandal - �4 million has been spent on this inquiry and after four years to get so little is unacceptable. This is no better than Stevens' first report, which we never got to see."

Sir John's report spans three separate inquiries in the past 14 years. His findings will be presented to Northern Ireland Chief Constable Hugh Orde, who once led the inquiry and has already made changes to the Special Branch procedures.

The inquiry focused on claims that loyalist terrorists involved in a wave of sectarian murders, including that of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane in 1989, were aided by police and military intelligence.

Files on more than 20 civilians, soldiers and police officers - both serving and retired - have been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Sources close to the inquiry say the public report, still being worked on last night, will be "short but robust". Restrictions have been placed on details surrounding some individuals identified in the main report because of pending criminal prosecutions. The report singles out the Army's ultra-secret Force Research Unit ( FRU), then headed by Brigadier Gordon Kerr, currently British military attach?n Beijing.

He was interviewed under criminal caution by inquiry detectives, and his name is believed to be one of those passed to the DPP.

The FRU ran double agents such as Brian Nelson, who died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage last week. Nelson has been linked to more than 30 murders, including that of Finucane. A former soldier from Belfast's Shankill Road area, he was recruited by Brigadier Kerr while in the Ulster Defence Association as part of a plan to stop the loyalist terror group shooting ordinary Catholics and concentrate on known republicans.

Nelson was the UDA's intelligence officer, providing gunmen with information on targets. He was also supposed to tell his Army handlers but did not always do so. He claimed that, when he did, they did not always warn the intended victim. He also said his security force bosses knew the UDA asked him to compile information on Finucane.

Nelson's role as an Army agent was discovered in 1990 and he was jailed for 10 years on five counts of conspiracy to murder. He pleaded guilty so that allegations of security force collusion were not aired in court. When he was released he was spirited away to England and given a new identity. This week's report is expected to say that Finucane's murder-could have been prevented, and that his killers could have been brought to justice.

It will call for greater accountability of the Special Branch and undercover Army activities in Northern Ireland, and it will criticise the police's failure to keep proper records of activities and informants.

Senior Met detectives were seconded to the inquiry amid great secrecy and interviewed people ranging from senior military figures to loyalist gunmen. At one stage Sir John's HQ in Northern Ireland - in a supposedly secure building - was burnt down. He is convinced it was arson, an effort to get him and his team to leave Northern Ireland.

What exactly was the Gunpowder Plot?

The Gunpowder Plot is the name given to the conspiracy to blow up the Houses of Parliament on 5 November 1605, which was discovered the night before. The origins of the plot remain unclear and it is doubtful that the truth will ever be known. Generations of historians accepted it was an attempt to re-establish the Catholic religion. Others, in more recent times, have suspected that the plot was the work of a group of agents-provocateurs, anxious to discredit the Jesuits and reinforce the ascendancy of the Protestant religion.

Who was involved in the Plot?

The plot centred around five conspirators, Robert Catesby, Thomas Winter, Thomas Percy, John Wright and Guy (or Guido) Fawkes, later joined by Robert Keyes, who determined to blow up of the House of Lords in 1605. The detonation was to take place on State Opening day, when the King, Lords and Commons would all be present in the Lords Chamber.

There is no doubt that Fawkes, though remembered wrongly as the principal conspirator, was in fact a minor cog in the wheel. Born in 1570 at York, he was brought up as a Protestant. In 1593, he enlisted as a mercenary in the Spanish Army in the Netherlands - he became a Catholic shortly before that date. He was at the capture of Calais in 1595, where he apparently distinguished himself greatly. He may have been chosen for his skills when it was planned to tunnel under the House, and it was an advantage that, having been abroad for some time, he was not known in London.

How was the Plot discovered?

The plot was discovered, in the official version, through an anonymous letter to Lord Monteagle, a Catholic, warning him not to attend the State Opening. Whether the letter was genuine or a forgery is uncertain. In any event, on the 4th of November an initial search was made of Parliament (initially, it is said by Monteagle and the Lord Chamberlain, Suffolk). The cellar was thoroughly searched at midnight and Fawkes found with the gunpowder. He was then arrested. What happened to Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators? All the co-conspirators (except Robert Winter) were killed or arrested by 12 November and taken to the Tower of London. They were probably subjected to extensive torture which formed part of the punishment for treason at the time. Fawkes and the conspirators who remained alive, were tried for high treason in Westminster Hall on 27 January 1606 and all were convicted and sentenced to death. The executions took place on 30th and 31st January (Fawkes was executed on 31st) and included hanging, drawing and quartering. The heads and other portions of the conspirator's bodies were set up at various points around Westminster and London. How is the Gunpowder Plot remembered?

The fifth of November is variously called 'Firework Night', 'Bonfire Night' or 'Guy Fawkes Day'. An Act of Parliament (3 James I, cap 1) was passed to appoint 5th November in each year as a day of thanksgiving for 'the joyful day of deliverance'. The Act remained in force until 1859. It is still the custom for Britain on, or around, 5th November to let off fireworks and children to make guys - effigies supposedly of Fawkes. Institutions and towns may hold firework displays and bonfire parties, and the same is done, on a smaller scale in back gardens throughout the country.

Are the Houses of Parliament still searched before State Opening?

The Houses of Parliament are still searched by the Yeomen of the Guard just before the State Opening (usually held in November since 1928) to ensure no latter-day Fawkes is concealed in the cellars, though this is retained as a picturesque custom rather than a serious anti-terrorist precaution (for which, of course, there are proper means). Does the cellar where Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament still exist? No - the cellar was destroyed in the fire of 1834 that devastated the mediaeval Houses of Parliament. But portions of its fabric are on display at Sir John Soane's museum in Lincoln's Inn Fields, as is the lantern Guy Fawkes carried in 1605. One of the plotters was a man called Francis Tresham. Lord Monteagle was his cousin. On the evening of October 26th, a mysterious man brought a letter to Monteagle's home just outside of London. The letter was a clear warning for Monteagle not to turn up at the Houses of Parliament on the 5th November. In modern English the letter stated that Parliament would receive a terrible blow on that day and that those killed would not see who had done it to them. The letter was addressed to Monteagle but it was read out aloud by his servant. Why? Was Monteagle looking for a witness that he had received this letter? Monteagle went straight to Robert Cecil and informed him of what had happened. Cecil ordered a search of the cellars of Parliament on the night of November 4th. Those guards found Guy Fawkes. A second search the next day, ordered by James I, also found the explosives and Guy who was found to be in possession of matches. he was arrested."

THE Secret Intelligence Service has run an operation to gain public support for sanctions and the use of military force in Iraq. The government yesterday confirmed that MI6 had organised Operation Mass Appeal, a campaign to plant stories in the media about Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction.

The revelation will create embarrassing questions for Tony Blair in the run-up to the publication of the report by Lord Hutton into the circumstances surrounding the death of Dr David Kelly, the government weapons expert. vA senior official admitted that MI6 had been at the heart of a campaign launched in the late 1990s to spread information about Saddam's development of nerve agents and other weapons, but denied that it had planted misinformation. "There were things about Saddam's regime and his weapons that the public needed to know," said the official.

The admission followed claims by Scott Ritter, who led 14 inspection missions in Iraq, that MI6 had recruited him in 1997 to help with the propaganda effort. He described meetings where the senior officer and at least two other MI6 staff had discussed ways to manipulate intelligence material.

"The aim was to convince the public that Iraq was a far greater threat than it actually was," Ritter said last week.

He said there was evidence that MI6 continued to use similar propaganda tactics up to the invasion of Iraq earlier this year. "Stories ran in the media about secret underground facilities in Iraq and ongoing programmes (to produce weapons of mass destruction)," said Ritter. "They were sourced to western intelligence and all of them were garbage."

Kelly, himself a former United Nations weapons inspector and colleague of Ritter, might also have been used by MI6 to pass information to the media. "Kelly was a known and government-approved conduit with the media," said Ritter.

Hutton's report is expected to deliver a verdict next month on whether intelligence was misused in order to promote the case for going to war.

Hutton heard evidence that Kelly was authorised by the Foreign Office to speak to journalists on Iraq. Kelly was in close touch with the "Rockingham cell", a group of weapons experts that received MI6 intelligence.

Blair justified his backing for sanctions and for the invasion of Iraq on the grounds that intelligence reports showed Saddam was working to acquire chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. The use of MI6 as a "back channel" for promoting the government's policies on Iraq was never discovered during the Hutton inquiry and is likely to cause considerable disquiet among MPs.

A key figure in Operation Mass Appeal was Sir Derek Plumbly, then director of the Middle East department at the Foreign Office and now Britain's ambassador to Egypt. Plumbly worked closely with MI6 to help to promote Britain's Middle East policy.

The campaign was judged to be having a successful effect on public opinion. MI6 passed on intelligence that Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction and rebuilding its arsenal.

Poland, India and South Africa were initially chosen as targets for the campaign because they were non-aligned UN countries not supporting the British and US position on sanctions. At the time, in 1997, Poland was also a member of the UN security council.

Ritter was a willing accomplice to the alleged propaganda effort when first approached by MI6's station chief in New York. He obtained approval to co-operate from Richard Butler, then executive chairman of the UN Special Commission on Iraq Disarmament.

Ritter met MI6 to discuss Operation Mass Appeal at a lunch in London in June 1998 at which two men and a woman from MI6 were present. The Sunday Times is prevented by the Official Secrets Act from publishing their names.

Ritter had previously met the MI6 officer at Vauxhall Cross, the service's London headquarters. He asked Ritter for information on Iraq that could be planted in newspapers in India, Poland and South Africa from where it would "feed back" to Britain and America.

Ritter opposed the Iraq war but this is the first time that he has named members of British intelligence as being involved in a propaganda campaign. He said he had decided to "name names" because he was frustrated at "an official cover-up" and the "misuse of intelligence".

"What MI6 was determined to do by the selective use of intelligence was to give the impression that Saddam still had WMDs or was making them and thereby legitimise sanctions and military action against Iraq," he said.

Recent reports suggest America has all but abandoned hopes of finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and that David Kay, head of the Iraq Survey Group, has resigned earlier than expected, frustrated that his resources have been diverted to tracking down insurgents.

Speaking in Jerusalem Dec. 20, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer made the connection between the growth of the Islamic fundamentalist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and Israel's promotion of the Islamic movement as a counter to the Palestinian nationalist movement. Kurtzer's comments come very close to EIR's own presentation of the evidence of Israel's instrumental role in establishing Hamas, and its ongoing control of that organization.

Kurtzer said that the growth of the Islamic movement in the Palestinian territories in recent decades�"with the tacit support of Israel"�was "not totally unrelated" to the emergence of Hamas and Islamic Jihad and their terrorist attacks against Israel. Kurtzer explained that during the 1980s, when the Islamic movement began to flourish in the West Bank and Gaza, "Israel perceived it to be better to have people turning toward religion rather than toward a nationalistic cause [the Palestinian Liberation Organization�ed.]." It therefore did little to stop the flow of money to mosques and other religious institutions, rather than to schools.

According to the Dec. 21 Israeli daily Ha'aretz, Kurtzer made these extraordinary statements at a seminar on religion and politics sponsored by Oz V'Shalom-Netivot Shalom, a largely Anglo-American organization that promotes peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Rabbi Dr. Aharon Lichtenstein, the head of Har Etzion Yeshiva in Alon Shvut, who is an active advocate of a just regional peace, also spoke. Kurtzer said that as a result of the growth of Islam at the expense of education, there are now Palestinians who are "determined terrorists that use religious beliefs in a perverted way to appeal to the masses."

Kurtzer said that cultural and religious interaction is potentially a way to "build bridges." But instead, "the perverted use of religion in the region is today becoming one of the great challenges for the years ahead." He said that there is no "inherent component" in Islam that advocates violence. But one of the five principles of Islam, jihad�resistance�"in classic religious associations connotes religious belief and fervor, not violence." But extremists have distorted the meaning of jihad, so it now has a connotation of violence in the service of a religious purpose. The Enemy of My Enemy Is My Friend

This statement is extraordinary given the fact that Kurtzer is a very senior diplomat, having held the post of Ambassador to Egypt just prior to going on to Tel Aviv. He is also an Orthodox Jew who is not shy of criticizing the extreme anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic views held by certain Arab circles. But Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon rarely grants the United States' highest representative in Israel an official audience.

The ambassador's comments are an acknowledgment of what any serious Middle East observers knows: Hamas has always been seen as a tool by which Israel could undermine the nationalist movement led by Palestinian Authority President and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Chairman Yasser Arafat. Similar statements by Arafat have been dismissed by Israel as "cranky" propaganda. In an interview with the Dec. 11 Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Arafat said, "We are doing everything to stop the violence. But Hamas is a creature of Israel which at the time of Prime Minister [Yitzhak] Shamir [the late 1980s, when Hamas arose], gave them money and more than 700 institutions, among them schools, universities and mosques. Even [former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak] Rabin ended up admitting it, when I charged him with it, in the presence of [Egpytian President Hosni] Mubarak."

To the Italian daily L'Espresso, Arafat laid out the reasons for this support. "Hamas was constituted with the support of Israel. The aim was to create an organization antagonistic to the PLO. They received financing and training from Israel. They have continued to benefit from permits and authorizations, while we have been limited, even to build a tomato factory. Rabin himself defined it as a fatal error. Some collaborationists of Israel are involved in these [terror] attacks," he said. "We have proof, and we are placing it at the disposal of the Italian government."

On one level the support for Hamas is simply the application of the old saying, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Indeed, in the minds of crude Israeli ultra-nationalists and fascists such as Sharon and his faction, this is indeed the case. Sharon is not interested in peace and therefore is not concerned that the violence and needless deaths of Israelis and Palestinians continue. In the Jan. 3 Ha'aretz, Yossi Sarid, chairman of the Meretz party, wrote, "What does frighten Sharon ... is any prospect or sign of calm or moderation. If the situation were to calm down and stabilize, Sharon would have to return to the negotiating table and, in the wake of pressure from within and without, he would have to raise serious proposals for an agreement. This moment terrifies Sharon and he wants to put it off for as long as he possibly can." In contrast, Sarid said that Sharon understands "that the terrorists and those who give them asylum are not the real enemies. Instead, the real enemies are the moderates.... You fight terrorists�a pretty simple operation�but you must talk with moderates, and this is a very tricky, if not dangerous, business."

More important for the survival of not only the Palestinian people, but especially Israel itself, is the dangerous role of the puppetmasters outside the region, who are manipulating both sides of this deadly game as part of their own demonic plans to spread the policy of a "clash of civilizations." In this regard, Sharon, and his "Greater Israel" policy, is just as much a puppet as the Palestinian, strapped with explosives, who blows himself up at an Israeli bus station. Two Decades of Undermining Arafat

Given the level of control that the Israeli intelligence services such as the Shin Bet and Mossad have been able to exert over the Palestinian territories during the last 35 years of Israeli occupation, the capability to manipulate militant and violent organizations, such as those associated with Hamas, should not surprise anyone familiar with intelligence and even routine police operations. This should be obvious, considering that Israel has routinely recruited thousands of collaborators and provocateurs among the tens of thousands of Palestinians who have passed through Israeli prisons in over 35 years of its occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Most convincing is a comparison of the development of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and their antecedents, and the growing national and international legitimacy of the PLO and its undisputed leader, Arafat.

Hamas is an acronym for Harafat al-Muqawama Al-Islamiyya, or Islamic Resistance Movement. Its spiritual leader is Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, who, despite his fiery anti-Israeli sermons, has had an unusual relationship with the Israeli authorities. In 1973, Yassin established the Islamic Association�at a time when it was Israeli policy to promote what Ambassador Kurtzer refers to as the "Islamic movement."

One might ask: Why should Israel promote an Islamic movement which later turns around and attacks it? How could the Israeli secret services be taken in by a Yassin? They weren't. The simple fact is, that the stated policy of Hamas is simply the flip side of Sharon's "Greater Israel" policy that refuses to seek a territorial compromise. The Hamas charter in 1988 stated, "The land of Palestine has been an Islamic Waqf throughout the generations, and until the Day of Resurrection, no one can renounce it or part of it, or abandon it or part of it.... Peace initiatives, the so-called peace initiatives, are all contraray to the beliefs of Hamas, for renouncing any part of Palestine means renouncing part of the religion." In this rhetoric there is no room for a state of Israel�as there is none for a state of Palestine in Sharon's "Greater Israel."

Israel's Hamas relations intensified after the Arab League, in 1974, decided to recognize Arafat and the PLO as the representatives of the Palestinian people�in effect, a government in exile. By 1979, top Yassin acquired an official permit from the Israeli government of Prime Minister Menachem Begin. This coincided with the signing of the Camp David peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. That treaty embodied detailed clauses calling for the establishment of a Palestinian Authority in the Occupied Territories, which would be the precursor for the Israeli withdrawal and the establishment of a Palestinian state. Gen. Ariel Sharon has been the chief proponent since this treaty was signed, of the policy of ensuring that these clauses would never be implemented. His chosen alternatives were war in Lebanon and the expansion of the Jewish settlements in the Occupied Territories. Sharon was helped by the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat by Anglo-American-controlled, Egypt-based Islamic terrorists. `Policy of Strengthening Islamic Bodies'

Israeli toleration, if not initial sponsorship of the Islamic movement, has been acknowledged and well documented in Israeli sources. In 1997, the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, at Tel Aviv University, published a study, "Hamas: Radical Islam In A National Struggle," authored by Anat Kurz and Nahman Tal. It stated that the Islamic Association, "the platform of which contained no nationalist clauses, obtained a permit from the Israeli Civil Administration in 1979 to conduct its activities. The permit was apparently consistent with the Israeli policy of strengthening Islamic bodies as a counterweight to Palestinian nationalist groups."

The rapid expansion of the Islamic Association led to clashes on the Palestinian University campuses in the Occupied Territories in the 1980s, betwen PLO-affiliated students and those associated with the Islamists. This expansion was aided by the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, where Sharon hoped to solve the "Palestinian problem" by militarily crushing the PLO�which was then based in Lebanon�and by carrying out genocide against the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians living in impoverished refugee camps in Lebanon. Despite his orchestration of the massacre of thousands of Palestinians, including women and children, at the Sabra and Chatila refugee camps, Sharon failed to eliminate Arafat. Nonetheless, Arafat and the PLO were exiled to Tunisia, their influence severely weakened.

Sheikh Yassin, along with other Hamas leaders, was arrested in 1984, after it was discovered that the Islamic Association had maintained arms caches. But the organization was not banned. In fact, Yassin was soon released as part of an unprecedented prisoner exchange between Israel and Ahmed Jabril's PFLP-General Command. This deal, made with one of the most violent of all anti-PLO Palestinian groups at the time, was made in a period when the Mossad was busy assassinating the most moderate of PLO leaders.

Then, in 1988, the Islamic Association created Hamas as a direct alternative to the PLO, which had launched the first Intifada the year before. 1988 was also important because the PLO, at the 19th Conference of the Palestinian National Council in Algeria in 1988, accepted the United Nations Security Council resolution of 1947 calling for two states in Palestine. They also called for convening an international peace conference based on UN Resolutions 242 and 338, which established the land-for-peace concept. This was a de facto recognition of Israel by the PLO and Arafat. By the end of 1988, the Reagan Administration extended official recognition to the PLO as the official representative of the Palestinian people.

When Palestinian leader Abu Jihad began negotiating with Hamas, in an attempt to win its mass base over to the new policy, he was promptly assassinated by the Mossad.

Yassin, as all senior leaders of Hamas, is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, the far-flung international Islamic organization with operations throughout the Islamic world. In the past, Anglo-American factions have not hesitated to manipulate the Brotherhood's various factions to destabilize secular Arab regimes. When Zbigniew Brzezinski launched the Afghan war against Russia in the 1980s, many of the Arab mujahideen fighters were recruited through Muslim Brotherhood-linked networks. The Muslim Brotherhood story fills volumes; the crucial point here is that Hamas, one of its branches, has traditionally stood in opposition to the secular nationalism of Arafat, the PLO, and its supporting governments.

Hamas has a peculiar organizational structure which contrasts sharply with that of the PLO. While within the West Bank and Gaza, Hamas exists as a broad political movement, its militant wings, the Izza-Din Al Qassam and Islamic Jihad, split-offs from the organization, are administered totally separately. These latter organizations, which are responsible for the attacks, are under the control of leaders who operate from abroad. Their offices are in London, where the group's magazine, Falatin Al Muslimah, is based; Jordan; Syria; and the United States, particularly in Virginia and Texas. Although Arafat has periodically tried to bring the popular base of Hamas into the Palestinian fold, the foreign-based military leadership has always opposed him.

This bifurcation dovetails with Sharon's strategy of launching brutal attacks against Hamas targets, in order to elicit the equally brutal response from Islamic Jihad and the Izza-Din Al Qassam. Thus Arafat, and diplomatic goals, are undermined, and the fires of civil war within the Occupied Territories are stoked. The Anti-Oslo Terror Campaign Begins

The Oslo Accords marked the first glimmer of hope for a resolution of the Middle East conflict. And, the first suicide terrorist attack aimed at destroying it was not launched by Hamas or Islamic Jihad or another Palestinian faction. The first suicide attack was launched on Feb. 25, 1994, by Israeli terrorist Baruch Goldstein, when he entered the Mosque of Hebron and killed 50 Muslim worshippers as well as himself. Goldstein was a member of Kach, the terrorist organization founded by the late Meir Kahane, who also founded the Jewish Defense League in the 1960s in the United States. Kach, which is well connected to Sharon, is on the official U.S. State Department list of terrorist organizations.

The unprecedented massacre was calculated to set the stage for a suicide bombing campaign by Hamas and its split-off, Islamic Jihad, over the next year. In fact, it set into motion the "cycle of violence" that has yet to end. The Goldstein attack came at precisely the point when Israeli Prime Minister Rabin and Arafat began the formal implementation of the Oslo agreement which envisioned the establishment of a Palestinian state by 1998. The first Hamas-linked suicide attacks did not start until two months later, in April 1994, when Rabin and Arafat signed the agreement for the establishment of the Palestinian National Authority. The agreement called for the conduct of free elections throughout the territories�which would eventually establish the international legitimacy of the Arafat-led government.

But despite this terror campaign, which lasted for months under a massive crackdown by Arafat's security forces, the Rabin-Arafat alliance, although seriously weakened, was not broken. This alliance was finally broken with Rabin's assassination by an Israeli, on Nov. 5, 1995.

The next phase of attacks followed the "targetted assassination" of Hamas bomb-maker Yahya Ayyash on Jan. 5, 1996. Although said to be "revenge attacks," they were in fact part of Hamas' campaign to get Benjamin Netanyahu elected Israeli prime minister. This was admitted by Ibraham Ghawshah, Hamas' official spokesman resident in Amman, Jordan. He said that it was part of their strategy to influence Israeli public opinon to bring down the entire Oslo process. The election of Netanyahu indeed fulfilled all their hopes, especially after he launched his own provocations, which not only brought about the pre-calculated Hamas response, but also brought the region several times to the brink of war.

This tit-for-tat campaign reached the height of insanity when Netanyahu, under the direction of Sharon, who was a member of his government at the time, launched a Mossad assassination attempt in 1997 against the Jordan-based Hamas official Khalid Mishaal. Not only did the attempt fail, but it led to Israel agreeing to release Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Yassin from an Israeli jail, where he had been under arrest since 1989. Yassin was allowed to return to Gaza to rally Hamas against the Oslo process in general, and Arafat in particular.

This pattern has continued to this very day. Netanyahu's downfall in 1999 led to the short-lived government of Ehud Barak, who despite much talking and negotiating, furthered the Oslo process not one iota. By the end of the Summer of 2000, the stage was set for Sharon's ultimate provocation, his Sept. 28 march on to the Islamic holy site Al-Haram Al-Sharif/Temple Mount.

Since coming to power, Sharon has done everything to ensure the collapse of Arafat and the Palestinian Authority. If successful, it would either bring Hamas to power or lead to political chaos within the terrorities.

Mossad's record has also been blemished by a few embarrasing failures. In Lillehammer, Norway, on 07 January 1974, Mossad agents mistakenly killed Ahmad Boushiki, an Algerian waiter carrying a Moroccan passport, whom they mistook for PLO security head Ali Ahmad Salameh, believed to have masterminded the 1972 massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics [Salameh was killed in a 1979 car-bomb explosion in Lebanon]. Following the attack, the Mossad agents were arrested and tried before a Norwegian court. Five Israeli agents were convicted and served short jail sentences, though Israel denied responsibility for the murder. In February 1996, the Israeli government agreed to compensate the family of Ahmad Boushiki.

On 15 November 1995, Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir, an Israeli citizen. Following the controversy over the failure of intelligence to protect Rabin, and the embarrassment over the mistaken assassination of a Swedish national, the Director Geneneral of Mossad, known only as 'S', was forced into retirement. On 24 March 1996, Prime Minister Shimon Peres appointed Major General Danny Yatom as the new Director General of Mossad, the first Director of Mossad to ever be publically identified.

On 24 September 1997, Mossad operatives attempted to assassinate Khalid Meshaal, a top political leader of the Palestinian group Hamas. The assassins entered Jordan on fake Canadian, and injected Meshaal with a poison. Jordan was able to wring a number of concessions out of Israel in the aftermath of the fiasco, including the release of the founder of Hamas, Shaykh Ahmad Yasin, from an Israeli jail.

Ephraim Halevy, a nephew of the late Sir Isaiah Berlin [who helped to negotiate a peace deal with Jordan], became the new head of Mossad after two bungled operations led to the arrests of agents in Switzerland and Jordan. Mossad scaled down overseas assassinations after the bungled operations in the late 1990s. But by 2002 Prime Minister Ariel Sharon decided to remove Halevy, after the two clashed repeatedly about what strategy to adopt against Palestinian violence

In October 2002 General Meir Dagan, who served in the Israeli Army with Ariel Sharon, and assisted him during his election campaign, was confirmed as head of Mossad. Dagan led an undercover commando unit that tracked and killed Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. Sharon wanted Mossad to go back to the undercover and special operations for which it was renowned.

Israel is embarking upon a more aggressive approach to the war on terror that will include staging targeted killings in the United States and other friendly countries, former Israeli intelligence officials told United Press International.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has forbidden the practice until now, these sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Israeli statements were confirmed by more than a half dozen U.S. foreign policy and intelligence officials in interviews with UPI.

With the appointment of Meir Dagan, the new director Israel's Mossad secret intelligence service, Sharon is also preparing "a huge budget" increase for the spy agency as part of "a tougher stance in fighting global jihad (or holy war)," one Israeli official said.

Since Sharon became Israeli prime minister, Tel Aviv has mainly limited its practice of targeted killings to the West Bank and Gaza because "no one wanted such operations on their territory," a former Israeli intelligence official said.

Another former Israeli government official said that under Sharon, "diplomatic constraints have prevented the Mossad from carrying out 'preventive operations' (targeted killings) on the soil of friendly countries until now."

He said Sharon is "reversing that policy, even if it risks complications to Israel's bilateral relations."

A former Israeli military intelligence source agreed: "What Sharon wants is a much more extensive and tough approach to global terrorism, and this includes greater operational maneuverability."

Does this mean assassinations on the soil of allies?

"It does," he said.

"Mossad is definitely being beefed up," a U.S. government official said of the Israeli agency's budget increase. He declined to comment on the Tel Aviv's geographic expansion of targeted killings.

An FBI spokesman also declined to comment, saying: "This is a policy matter. We only enforce federal laws."

A congressional staff member with deep knowledge of intelligence matters said, "I don't know on what basis we would be able to protest Israel's actions." He referred to the recent killing of Qaed Salim Sinan al Harethi, a top al Qaida leader, in Yemen by a remotely controlled CIA drone.

"That was done on the soil of a friendly ally," the staffer said.

But the complications posed by Israel's new policy are real.

"Israel does not have a good record at doing this sort of thing," said former CIA counter-terrorism official Larry Johnson.

He cited the 1997 fiasco where two Mossad agents were captured after they tried to assassinate Khaled Mashaal, a Hamas political leader, by injecting him with poison.

According to Johnson, the attempt, made in Amman, Jordan, caused a political crisis in Israeli-Jordan relations. In addition, because the Israeli agents carried Canadian passports, Canada withdrew its ambassador in protest, he said. Jordan is one of two Arab nations to recognize Israel. The other is Egypt.

At the time, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said, "I have no intention of stopping the activities of this government against terror," according to a CNN report.

Former CIA officials say Israel was forced to free jailed Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and 70 other Jordanian and Palestinian prisoner being held in Israeli jails to secure the release of the two would-be Mossad assassins.

Phil Stoddard, former director of the Middle East Institute, cited a botched plot to kill Ali Hassan Salemeh, the mastermind of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre. The 1974 attempt severely embarrassed Mossad when the Israeli hit team mistakenly assassinated a Moroccan waiter in Lillehammer, Norway.

Salemeh, later a CIA asset, was killed in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1976 by a car bomb placed by an Israeli assassination team, former U.S. intelligence officials said.

"Israel knew Salemeh was providing us with preventive intelligence on the Palestinians and his being killed pissed off a lot of people," said a former senior CIA official.

But some Israeli operations have been successful.

Gerald Bull, an Ontario-born U.S. citizen and designer of the Iraqi supergun -- a massive artillery system capable of launching satellites into orbit, and of delivering nuclear chemical or biological payloads from Baghdad to Israel -- was killed in Belgium in March 1990. The killing is still unsolved, but former CIA officials said a Mossad hit team is the most likely suspect.

Bull worked on the supergun design -- codenamed Project Babylon -- for 10 years, and helped the Iraqis develop many smaller artillery systems. He was found with five bullets in his head outside his Brussels apartment.

Israeli hit teams, which consist of units or squadrons of the Kidon, a sub-unit for Mossad's highly secret Metsada department, would stage the operations, former Israeli intelligence sources said. Kidon is a Hebrew word meaning "bayonet," one former Israeli intelligence source said.

This Israeli government source explained that in the past Israel has not staged targeted killings in friendly countries because "no one wanted such operations on their territory."

This has become irrelevant, he said.

Dagan, the new hard-driving director of Mossad, will implement the new changes, former Israeli government officials said.

Dagan, nicknamed "the gun," was Sharon's adviser on counter-terrorism during the government of Netanyahu in 1996, former Israeli government officials say. A former military man, Dagan has also undertaken extremely sensitive diplomatic missions for several of Israel's prime ministers, former Israeli government sources said.

Former Israel Defense Forces Lt. Col. Gal Luft, who served under Dagan, described him as an "extremely creative individual -- creative to the point of recklessness."

A former CIA official who knows Dagan said the new Mossad director knows "his foreign affairs inside and out," and has a "real killer instinct."

Dagan is also "an intelligence natural" who has "a superb analyst not afraid to act on gut instinct," the former CIA official said.

Dagan has already removed Mossad officials whom he regards as "being too conservative or too cautious" and is building up "a constituency of senior people of the same mentality," one former long-time Israeli operative said.

Dagan is also urging that Mossad operatives rely less on secret sources and rely more on open information that is so plentifully provided on the Internet and newspapers.

"It's a cultural thing," one former Israeli intelligence operative explained. "Mossad in the past has put its emphasis on Humint (human intelligence) and secret operations and has neglected the whole field of open media, which has become extremely important."

Regarding Mossad's new policy and budget increase, Kim Farber an Israeli Embassy official said, "There is so little information available on this, there is nothing I can add."

As she prepared the Sabbath meal yesterday, Shiri Shefi was haunted by the thought that the bullets used by Palestinian gunmen to kill her five-year-old daughter Danielle could have been supplied by a neighbour in her settlement.

Hours earlier, news had broken that three young men from Adora, near Hebron - brothers Sela Amar, 23, and Roi Amar, 21, and Oded Malay - were among a number of soldiers arrested in connection with supplying ammunition to Palestinians. Shiri was clearly shaken.

"Of course I am furious," said Shiri, 29, a book keeper who has two other young children, aged four and one. "I don't want to say anything specific until the trial is over and the case has been proven. Then I will let out my rage."

She added: "I am trying not to tear myself apart emotionally again as we are attempting to rebuild this family. I really want to move out of Adora, but there is no support. This country has abandoned its people."

Israeli radio reported yesterday that three more soldiers had been arrested, raising the number of suspects to nine. One of them is a reserve army officer. The radio said military police have not ruled out further arrests.

The disclosures have shocked the nation. The fact that three of the accused come from Adora, where Palestinians killed four people, including Shiri's daughter, on April 27, has heightened the sense of bewilderment and betrayal.

According to police, the detained soldiers have admitted stealing about 60,000 rifle rounds from the army, and are suspected of selling thousands of them to Palestinians in the Hebron area over a three-year period.

If the accusations against the soldiers were proven the army would view their actions as "very grave", an army spokesman said.

Legal commentators have said the offence is treasonable under Israeli law, and if committed in wartime can result in the death penalty or life imprisonment. As the conflict with the Palestinians has intensified over the past 21 months, there have been reports of theft of weapons from army bases, raising suspicions that some of the arms were ending up in Palestinian hands.

Unlike the more religious settlements around Hebron, Adora is a small, close-knit settlement of mostly secular Israelis who came for a better life in its spacious and attractive hillside setting. But now many wonder what the future holds.

Since the terrorist attack in April about half the residents have moved out and the accusations against the young men in Adora have sown potentially destructive seeds of suspicion.

Ofir, 28, a friend of the young men, said the community was now deeply divided and the families of the accused were being shunned.

He said: "We are all very shocked. I have known these guys for a long time and trusted them, and I did reserve duty in the army with Sela just the other day. It is incredible to think that they could have helped Palestinian terrorists, beyond belief. It makes no sense."

At a spacious house nearby, where two cars were parked next to a neat garden, Jacqueline Amar, the brothers' mother, was also angry and hurt.

A Moroccan Jew, Jacqueline and her husband, Gabi, became the first residents of Adora 19 years ago, and she was furious that the Israeli media had already declared her sons "guilty".

"Sela served in an elite border police unit, risked his life to prevent terror attacks and invested his entire life in being an excellent soldier," she said.

"He said to me, 'Do you really think after all that I would go and help the terrorists?' The same goes for Roi."

Glancing sadly towards her husband she added: "People in the community may be gossiping about us, but I don't care. I am convinced of my sons' innocence and the truth will prevail".

LONDON (Reuters) - Armed police have turned the capital into "Fortress London" amid heightened fears of a guerrilla attack on the eve of U.S. President George W. Bush's visit.

The White House, wary of an al Qaeda strike, has insisted on tight precautions. Traditional events such as a horse-drawn carriage ride with the Queen will not be staged.

Weekend suicide bombings against two synagogues in Istanbul that killed 23 people served as a reminder that militants could strike anywhere, at any time, without warning.

An Arabic newspaper said on Sunday a unit of the al Qaeda network had claimed responsibility for the bombings and planned more attacks against the United States and its allies Britain, Italy, Australia and Japan.

Britain had already moved to a higher state of alert after warnings of a possible al Qaeda attack received days ago.

Fears of terror strikes and renewed geopolitical instability have swept financial markets, sending stocks lower, boosting bonds and helping drive safe-haven gold to nearly $400 an ounce.

But Prime Minister Tony Blair, Bush's staunchest ally in his "war on terror", insisted: "Now is not the time to waiver. Now is the time to see it through."

"This is the right moment for us to stand firm with the United States of America in defeating terrorism wherever it is and delivering us safely from what I genuinely believe to be the security threat of the 21st century," he told business leaders in Birmingham.

In London, roads were blocked and drivers stopped and searched as police tightened a security ring around the capital.

"The security is unprecedented because one, the level of terrorism threat and two, the nature of the president's visit," London police chief John Stevens said.

Tens of thousands plan to demonstrate against Bush, whose decision to invade Iraq was opposed by most Britons and backed by Blair. British troops play a major role in occupying southern Iraq.

Police snipers will line the president's route on rooftops and all the capital's rapid response armed units are on full alert ahead of the Tuesday arrival.

British police do not routinely carry firearms.

Police have cancelled all leave and are now putting 14,000 officers on duty in the capital's biggest security operation.

Bush is staying at the queen's London residence, Buckingham Palace, and demonstrators are determined to make their mark on a man who concedes he travels in a "bubble".

"The main thing for us is to get as many people on the streets as possible," said protester Guy Taylor from the "Globalise Resistance" group.

A YouGov poll ahead of the trip showed just what poor regard Bush is held in by Britons. He was branded a threat to world peace by 60 percent while 37 percent said he was "stupid".

Demonstrators say they plan a peaceful protest at Bush's war policy but the authorities, faced with a possible suicide attack as well as gridlock on the streets, are taking no chances.

A study released last week said London was at greater risk of a terror attack than any other major city in the United States or Western Europe.

The Control Risks Group business consultancy said Blair's support for the U.S.-led war in Iraq as well as Britain's large Muslim population meant there was a serious possibility of a suicide bombing.

The Strange Death of the Woman Who Filed a Rape Lawsuit Against Bush

Early one Saturday afternoon in July 2003, I made a simple phone call to Margie Schoedinger, a Texas woman who filed a rape lawsuit against George W. Bush in December 2002. I expected to leave a message on a machine, so I was caught a little offguard when Schoedinger answered.

She, too, sounded somewhat surprised I had called, saying she hadn't heard from many other reporters. But she talked to me for a few minutes about the legal action.

"I am still trying to prosecute [the lawsuit]," said Schoedinger, a 38-year-old African-American woman who lived in the Houston suburb of Missouri City. "I want to get this matter settled and go on with my life."

Well, Schoedinger hasn't gone on with her life. In fact, three months after I spoke to her, she died in an apparent suicide. And this matter remains unsettled.

When I asked her in July 2003 about the lack of media coverage, Schoedinger said she wasn't seeking publicity. She said she did not even know about a December 2002 article in the Fort Bend Star, the only U.S. mainstream media outlet that covered this story, to my knowledge. The Fort Bend reporter, LeaAnne Klentzman, said she even went to Schoedinger's home and talked to a man there, who said she could not come to door. While I reached and spoke to Schoedinger on my first attempt, maybe she wasn't ready to talk back in December.

Anyways, Schoedinger said she was surprised the case wasn't covered more because "it is true......People have to be accountable for what they do, and that's why I'm pursuing it."

To be sure, Schoedinger's accusations - which include being drugged and sexually assaulted numerous times by Bush and other men purporting to be FBI agents - are bizarre and hard for most people to believe. But her story fits in with those told by a growing number of people who say they were used as guinea pigs or whatever by members of the CIA or another U.S. agency who wanted to test out the latest mind-controlling drug or just have a strange form of release. And her death - let's just say government agents have made murders look like suicides before.

In her court petition, Schoedinger said police in Sugar Land, another Houston suburb where she said some assailants linked to Bush attempted to unsuccessfully abduct her from her car shortly before the 2000 election, refused to take a report or do anything about that incident. She filed a lawsuit against the Sugar Land department and said that in preparing its defense, Sugar Land police found out that she dated Bush as a minor. I didn't get a chance to ask Schoedinger about that tie and didn't meet her in person, but her driver's license listed her as being 5-foot-8 and weighing 125 pounds, for what that's worth.

The Fort Bend Star story quoted a Sugar Land police captain saying his department had no record of any complaints by Schoedinger. All he had to do was what I did - go to the Fort Bend County Internet site and do a simple search on Schoedinger's name in the area of civil court records. I found the lawsuit Schoedinger filed in December 2000 against Sugar Land police, and it even had numerous responses by the department's attorneys in that case.

Just wait. This story gets stranger.

When I started asking Schoedinger about certain details of the case, such as alleged surveillance at her home and if she was still legally representing herself, she politely ended our conversation. "I need to see what has been written," Schoedinger said. "I feel like it's best for me to end our conversation."

Obviously, she had learned to be careful about what she said and to whom she said it. I could understand her being leery about talking about her situation with a stranger over the phone.

But I remember being puzzled by Schoedinger's attitude after hanging up the phone. I wondered that if she had made up such a wild story, why she didn't come up with something a little less outlandish, in which people couldn't necessarily dismiss her as a kook. I wondered why she didn't seek publicity to at least provide some form of protection. I've long learned that being as public as possible is one of your best defenses against rogue intelligence agents. But she didn't even seem to want any media to cover her story. I told several writers I knew, some of whom tried to contact Schoedinger. None succeeded, as far as I know.

I remember thinking, "I hope she doesn't wind up on the wrong side of a gun." And sure enough, in late September, Schoedinger did.

The Houston Chronicle wrote a bare-bones obituary that stated only that Schoedinger "expired" on Sept. 22, 2003, and her burial was at Houston Memorial Gardens.

I called the Harris County Medical Examiner's office, and a clerk told me the cause of death: a "suicide" by a "gunshot wound to the head." I hung up amid bombs going off in my mind.

For one, using a gun to commit suicide is predominantly executed by males, according to psychiatrists and other sources like pharmaceutical firm Merck & Co. Women are more likely to overdose on drugs, although the number of gunshot suicides among women has increased in recent years.

Besides Pravda and Internet ezines - one of whom referred to Schoedinger as "deranged" - I haven't seen stories on this strange death of a woman who filed a rape lawsuit against the U.S. president and wound up dead nine months later. I can't say I'm surprised. Or even angry. I don't know what the hell to think. All I know is I was one of the last - if not the last - reporters to speak to Schoedinger, and she didn't sound "deranged" to me in July 2003. She sounded like someone who had gone through something weird and was trying to sort it out. She sounded like someone who wanted the truth to come out. And now she's dead. vIf this had happened to Clinton when he was in the White House, do you think the story would have been covered non-stop on FOX, CNN and the right-wing talk shows? Do you think we'd have reporters asking Clinton and his people about this death in press conferences? Is FOX unfair and imbalanced to the point of being "deranged?"

There are some more odd twists to this case. I also found a 2002 criminal case related to Schoedinger in which Christopher Schoedinger, her husband, allegedly struck her. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to a year in jail. Christopher Schoedinger had also filed for divorce. Then since 1997, Margie Schoedinger had filed for at least five assumed business names for various ventures - including a communications firm, health and beauty business, travel agency and publishing company. Could a "deranged" person start all those businesses or even know how to file a lawsuit? vSchoedinger's lawsuit can still be viewed on the Fort Bend County site at ccweb.co.fort-bend.tx.us/localization/menu.asp - then go down to the bottom and click on civil court. Then type "schoedinger" in the plaintiff box and click search. You should find another lawsuit she filed against Sugar Land police, as well.

I can really understand media members being intimidated, even frightened, of the Bush administration. As I've detailed before, these are not Boy Scouts running the show. The Schoedinger death is just the latest in a string of strange ones surrounding the Bush family - Bush biographer J.H. Hatfield, Sen. Paul Wellstone, Sen. Mel Carnahan, and others that are detailed on various sites, including at members.boardhost.com/gwbush/msg/362.html.

For the record, I contacted Bush's media office about Schoedinger and have yet to hear back. Now that I live in the Washington, D.C., area, I can go down to the White House in person and try to get someone to speak to me about this case. As expected, I haven't had much luck with the Fort Bend County and other Texas authorities. So maybe I'll stand outside the White House, holding a sign saying, "Who killed Margie Schoedinger?" and passing out copies of my column on the case. It would make about as much sense as anything else in this matter.

For all I know, maybe Schoedinger did kill herself. Maybe she dreamed up a lot of this stuff. But I don't know, am I "deranged" to think it's weird that in this mass-media, detailed-information age, so few people are even asking any questions about how a woman who filed a rape lawsuit against the president could be dead less than a year later?

The honorary title of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports has been reserved for members of the country's nobility since ancient times, but that could be about to change.

The position has remained vacant since the death in 2002 of the Queen Mother, who served as the last warden to the association of 14 ports - including the original five ports of Sandwich, Dover, Hythe, Romney and Hastings.

Joe Trussler, the speaker of the Cinque Ports and the Mayor of Sandwich, has asked the Queen and the Prime Minister to consider a number of public figures, including Bill Clinton, John Major and Nelson Mandela, for the post.

The Cinque Ports was originally a confederation of five harbours which were responsible for Britain's naval defence. The Domesday Book records the obligation of the ports to supply ships and men to the Crown and keep the Channel free of enemy shipping. The office of the Lord Warden, which can be traced back to 1226, has been occupied by the Duke of Wellington, William Pitt, George V and Winston Churchill. These days, the role is only ceremonial.

Mr Trussler said he recommended Mr Clinton for the post because of his American heritage and his love of golf. He felt that the appointment of the former president of the US would enhance Britain's relations with America, and his love of golf would sit well with the Sandwich landscape. The Royal St Georges Club at Sandwich was the venue for last year's British Open.

"We were asked who we would personally like to see as Lord Warden and I think I caused a bit of a stir when I said Bill Clinton," Mr Trussler said. "I was thinking about what such an appointment would do for the region. He plays golf and the Americans love British history, so he may draw in greater tourism."

Considered England's most ancient military honour, the title of Lord Warden can be given to anyone in the Commonwealth, and has been occupied by Sir Robert Menzies, Australia's longest serving prime minister.

The list of possible appointees submitted by the Confederation of the Cinque Ports to the Queen and Downing Street also includesthe Duke of York and the Princess Royal. A decision is expected by the end of February.

Masons to reveal secret list of names

THEY are thick brown ledgers that wouldn't look out of place in a Harry Potter film. The huge tomes - each containing around 500 yellowing pages crammed with densely-packed, handwritten information - are so heavy some staff are banned from attempting to lift them.

The huge works are the membership registers of the 600 Freemason's lodges of Scotland, the "secret" order reputed to wield legendary influence in the corridors of power.

And last week, in a historic and unprecedented move, six volumes were thrown open to Scotland on Sunday as part of Freemasonry's attempts to dispel its secretive image and counter a damaging association with Dunblane killer Thomas Hamilton. It is the first time that an outside organisation has had such open access to masonic files.

The registration books, and the equally-voluminous attendance books for two individual lodges, cover the period during which Hamilton could have been a member or a visitor. Exhaustive searches by senior staff of the Grand Lodge of Scotland - effectively head office - has failed to find any record of Hamilton ever being a mason or even stepping over the threshold of the masonic lodges in Glasgow and Stirling to which he has been most closely linked.

The Grand Lodge is now even considering publishing the relevant membership records on the internet in a further move to reassure the wider public that it has nothing to hide.

Robert Cooper, the museum and library curator of the Grand Lodge in Edinburgh's George Street, said: "We are going to ask for members' permission from two lodges that Thomas Hamilton has been linked with to print the membership book on the internet to put an end to speculation over whether he was a Freemason or not. We know he wasn't but we want everyone else to be sure as well."

It's not just an academic exercise. The Hamilton connection has haunted the Freemasons since he shot dead 16 children, one of their teachers and himself in the school gym of Dunblane Primary in 1996. Last month, a petition was submitted by a local resident to the Scottish parliament asking for the Cullen Inquiry into the murders to be reopened to re-examine alleged masonic links.

Cooper is more familiar than most with how the theory goes. It sprang, he says, from the clearly-recorded membership of Hamilton's grandfather, James, a welder who joined the Garrowhill Lodge in the working class district of Baillieston in December 1957 and, after moving home, was a regular attendee at the Royal Arch Lodge in Stirling until his death in 2000.

As the grandfather was a member, then so was the grandson, so the theory progresses. As a mason, Thomas Hamilton would mix socially with other masons, many of them local police officers, the theory dictates. "Thomas Hamilton was unstable but was allowed to keep guns in his house by the police because they were all masons together," Cooper said. "None of this is true."

Membership records were scrutinised for the years in which Hamilton, who was born in 1952, could have been a member. They were from 1973, after he was 21 (you can only join at 18 if your father has been a member), to 1996 when he died. Another two Thomas Hamiltons were unearthed in Scotland but they were both the wrong ages. The theory goes police allowed Thomas Hamilton to keep guns because they were all masons

"We spent months scouring the relevant documentation and no trace was found of him. Of course people will say you would say that wouldn't you, which is why we are prepared to open the relevant parts of the register and attendance books up to scrutiny." Cooper hopes it will also dispel the notion that masonic membership is the province of the wealthy and powerful. "I think most people will be surprised about how blue collar our membership really is. I shouldn't tell you this but there isn't one sheriff or judge among the Scottish membership."

The registration files themselves, stored in protective safes within the basement vaults of George Street, are kept in much the same format as they were when Freemasonry as a movement began life in Scotland in the 17th century. The broad pages record the new recruit's name, occupation and age when first attending. A neat row notes the date of the three ceremonies each Lodge member must undergo before the achieve the rank of Master Mason.

A glance through the pages reveals a multitude of trades and professions, including engineers, joiners, labourers, bus drivers, pipelayers, welders, brewery workers and the occasional company director.

There have been attempts to present a more open image to the public. The movement and its 75,000-strong membership throughout Scotland realises that to survive in the long run it has to overcome long-held suspicions. The George Street headquarters is also the movement's library and museum, stuffed with books and antique glassware and pottery of masonic significance, which are open to visitors.

The building dates from 1911, when it was purpose-built to replace an earlier Grand Lodge. The 30 rooms are an Edwardian time capsule of marbled pillars and warm wooden panelling.

The Grand Hall where the annual general meeting will be held next week has seating for hundreds in cathedral-like splendour. The centrepiece is a traditional black-and-white chequered carpet, which symbolises the choices of good and evil. The many masons initiated here will have had to swear to the three great Masonic principles of Brotherly Love, Relief (assisting others) and Truth (honesty and integrity in personal, business and public life).

Scottish masons who have taken the vows in the past include Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Sir Harry Lauder, Manny Shinwell and King George VI.

The current Grand Master Mason is Sir Archibald Orr Ewing, a retired Stirlingshire businessman. His father held the same position and last Friday, his ceremonial regalia, complete with chains of office and gauntlets, had been lovingly laid-out in his office, with its immaculate Italian marble fireplace and ornate plasterwork ceilings, awaiting his attendance at the AGM.

Barrister's Freemasons case rejected

A BARRISTER who claims his career has been blighted because he refused to join the Freemasons 30 years ago has had his case rejected by the European Court of Human Rights.

Roger Everest, who practises from chambers at Pontyclun, near Cardiff, is convinced that he has suffered because he turned down an invitation from a colleague to join the Dinas Llandaff lodge of the Free-masons in 1973.

He said, "The invitation came from the late Eifion Morgans, who later became head of the chambers in Cardiff where I was working at the time. When I refused to join the lodge, he told me I would never get on in the legal profession.

"What has happened since makes me convinced that his was not an empty threat. I was passed over for promotion and I believe that on a number of occasions I was disadvantaged because of my non-member-ship."

In recent years Mr Everest has been involved in litigation with the barristers' professional body the Bar Council, alleging that it had libelled him. He lost the case at the Court of Appeal, was refused permission to take it to the House of Lords, and eventually went to the European Court of Human Rights, claiming he had been discriminated against because he was not a Freemason.

The European Court has now rejected his case, but has not told him on what grounds.

Mr Everest said, "I have made my point and have taken this as far as I can."

The Bar Council chose not to respond.

A brief history of the origin of Christmas

No one really knows when Jesus Christ was born. There were no halls of records then as there are today. No birth certificates and definitely no computers. It's likely, many religious scholars feel, he was born in the spring.

Dec. 25 was chosen, however, more as a political move than a religious one. Surprisingly the celebration of Christ's birthday wasn't added to the Christian calendar until the fourth century. Prior to that many Christians didn't think it was proper to celebrate his birth since no one really knew when it was.

Dec. 25 has always been a significant date for the Romans, Babylonians, the Egyptians, and other cultures.

The Romans celebrated a feast day called Saturnalia named for their god Saturn, where revelry and gift-giving went on for a week. The day of Saturnalia was Dec. 21, the beginning of winter and shortest day of the year and thought to be the birthday of the sun.

The Babylonians believed the son of the queen of heaven was born on Dec. 25. The same date was celebrated by the Egyptians as the birth of the son of Isis, the fertility goddess.

But the early church apparently had an ulterior motive designating Dec. 25 as Christmas. Those Christians who already celebrated many of the pagan rituals could then channel their celebration towards Christ and the church.

Additionally, the early church could find it easier to convert the pagans to Christianity, particularly if it used the phrase, "light of the world" to lure them, since many pagans used that expression for the sun's birth. The word "light" replaced "coming" that had originally been used by the early Christians.

After determining that Dec. 25 would be the de facto birthday of Jesus Christ, the holiday became joyful, mimicking the pagan cultures. Of course there were detractors within the church.

In the Middle Ages it was felt Christmas should be a somber holiday and not a festival. The holiday soon was banned by some Protestant groups, particularly in England, but when King Charles II took over, the holiday returned.

In the early American colonies, Puritans and Baptists and others condemned the joyousness of the Christmas. The Catholics and Episcopalians, among others, went all out for Christmas.

Today Christmas is ingrained in our society. Even those who are not Christian often practice some aspects of the holiday. They give gifts and live a life of goodwill, as preached during the holiday.

Despite all attempts to neutralize this sacred day - winter vacation and winter holiday in school, national holiday tree, as per our President - Christmas is still part of who we are. It's celebrated all over the world on all seven continents. There's no getting away from it.

And really, who cares how it started? Who cares about the motives behind its origins? The early church was experiencing growing pains and had to find ways to survive. Christmas is a joyous, fulfilling time of year.

It's here to stay and will never be watered-down, political correctness notwithstanding.

Greek: diabolos, the devil. Hebrew: ha shatan, the adversary.

If we objectively look for Satan's handiwork, is it possible to find it imprinted on any "human traditions"? This fallen being which Scripture calls ha shatan (the adversary) is neither male nor female, but is among the most powerful, intelligent, and beautiful of all created beings -- and has existed since long before the Earth was formed. "He" really is "older than dirt", or the sun, moon, and stars. Know the schemes of your enemy, and you will be better prepared to identify when you are being deceived. Although there are many who directly and consciously choose to worship this being, it doesn't please "diabolos" nearly as much as being able to deceive the intelligent people of this world who are really intending to do what is right. Their hearts are good and pure, but they can be deceived very easily, so diabolos "masquerades" as a messenger of "Light" for them. The Latin word "Lucifer" means light bearer. The people who willingly choose to serve him are really worthless to him, and mean very little. They are often weak-minded and misinformed individuals, with little education or life experience (such as those who might join the "Church of Elvis", or join a cult to follow a Guru, or read Tarot cards and study their "horoscope" in the newspaper). But, the "elect" are the target of Satan's schemes, because they are YHWH's wife. Deut. 12:30,31 forbids us to learn the Pagan's ways, or to worship YHWH in the Pagan way. "Way" would be the process, scheme, model, method, pattern, or design of the Pagan ways. If we "adopt" a Pagan pattern or try to clean it up, we violate Deut. 12:30,31. It is like putting lipstick on a pig, thinking we have changed the situation by cleaning it up. Peter told us we must avoid becoming entangled again in Paganism in exactly these terms:

"A dog returns to his own vomit" and "A washed sow returns to her wallowing in the mud." 2 Peter 2:22

A MASTER OF CEREMONY

The objective of his game: to divert our obedience away from serving the true Creator of the universe, and influence us to do things his way instead. In other words, by following Satan's practices, we are obeying HIM. He knows that we will not serve him consciously, so he tricks us by means of schemes, devices, or snares. He attracts us to what looks good, then convinces us that it is what we should be doing. He is a gifted entertainer, and a master of ceremonies!

Long ago, after the flood, there were relatively few humans on the Earth. The three sons of Noach had separated somewhat, and formed 3 clans or 3 large families. These eventually became the three races of mankind (mongoloid, negroid, and caucazoid). The children of Ham and Yapheth went into the region called Sumer, while the children of Shem were some distance away to the southwest. The mountains of Ararat are in the area now called Turkey, so all mankind can claim to be Turkish! (Turkish American, Turkish African, Turkish Russian . . . . .). (smile)

Rulers arose in the midst of these clans, but from the clan of Ham a son of Kush came to power by means of intimidation and fear. He was a tyrant "hunter" and is given credit for becoming the first KING on the Earth. His name was NIMROD. Genesis 10 tells us the beginning of his reign was Babel, Erek, Akkad, and Kalneh in the land of Shinar. Going to Ashshur he built Neneweh, Rehoboth Ir, and Kelah. Genesis chapters 10 and 11 describe the origins of all the powerful influences we see on Earth today -- governmental, economic, and religious (these are the 3 "kingdoms" possessing authority over the whole Earth).

We can track "Satan's Seat" across the Earth over time by studying Scripture. He brought the populations together to serve him by designing a religious order or process that remains in perfect condition today. He used creation itself as a vehicle to make men follow his patterns. The cycle of the seasons, and the signs (constellations, solstices, equinoxes) and lights in the heavens became his snare for mankind. The calendar used by western civilization today represents the foundation upon which everything we think and do rests. In general, this "measurement" or "numbering" of time became the background for Astrology, Satan's original religious order. Our enemy is not flesh and blood -- but a spiritual being in control of the powers of this dark world.

THE ROLE OF THE SUN

Satan invented sun-worship. In the northern hemisphere, where all people lived at first after the Noachic Flood, the sun rises on the eastern horizon at its most northern point at the Summer Solstice (Sol-stice means "sun-stop"). At the winter Solstice, it is at its lowest point south, and was believed to be dying. For roughly 4,000 years, people have celebrated the "re-birth" of the SUN at the winter solstice. The principle object of worship in the ancient world was the sun (among those who were ignorant of the true Creator). Behind all Pagan deity worship stands Satan himself. He accepts honor in whatever name we wish to call him; Baal, Moloch, Marduk, Venus, Odin, Krishna, Aphrodite, Ishtar, Zeus, Amon-Ra, Mithras, Ahura-Mazda, Dagon -- male or female, it matters not. The most important day in the life of a witch or sorceror is their annual birthday. This is because the celebration of the sun's birthday was the winter solstice, which was what we call December 25th today. Originally, common people did not observe their personal birthday; the earliest birthday observances were reserved for the Pagan deities (all of these are Satan). Later, Kings observed their birthdays, as we see Pharaoh doing in the book of Genesis. Much later, common people began the practice, but only among Pagans, since that is the origin of birthday celebrations (consult the book of JOB and you'll see how each of his children had a party in their house "on their day". For roughly 4,000 years, the SOLSTICE has been -- by proxy -- the day of Satan's birthday celebration (because he is the designer of the original astrological religious pattern, and deceived mankind to cause them to worship the sun). Deut. 12:30, 31 clearly forbids the worship of YHWH after Pagan ways/methods/patterns. Many believe "All Hallowed's E'ven" (Halloween) is the birthday of Satan; but it wears no disguise as Christmas does. The deceiver uses insidious trickery to overcome us by means of traditions he's sown into our cultures.

RE-VISIONISM (�looking back�, with changes)

As a master of ceremonies, Satan disguised his religious deception by what scholars call "revisionism" over time. Here is what the dictionary says about revisionism:

"revisionism: n. 1. A policy of modification or change, especially of a political or religious doctrine." ("doctrine" is Latin for "teaching" -- doctor means teacher)

History shows that the Roman State religion was one of sun-worship (Mithraism) at first, then Constantine enforced a blended form of Christianity and Mithraism on the empire. He out-lawed the true Sabbath, and enforced Sun-day worship under penalty of death. He established Catholicism (Latin meaning: Universalism) by setting the dates for observing the weekly "sabbath" as Sun-day, and Easter for the empire. (Easter was already one of several vital Pagan observances, originally "Ishtar", commemorating the impregnation of the Earth-Mother nine months prior to the winter solstice!). Who designed sun-worship? The father of lies. Are any lies told around Christmas time?

In the year 525, Dionysus Exiguus (Dennis the Little) came to Rome from Scythia. He was a "monk" of some sort, which all Pagan religions seem to have -- but such a term is not found in Scripture as playing a role in true worship. Coming upon the time of the Solstice festival celebrating the birthday of the sun, he witnessed all Rome in revelry. Wreaths of greenery were hung on the doors of homes as emblems of the sun. Every good sun-worshipper had a round wreath on the door of their home. Everyone exchanged gifts, and drunken partying was everywhere. The color RED was also symbolic for the sun, bringing to mind HEAT. In ancient Babylon, gifts were placed on trees of the grove as offerings to Tammuz / Nimrod on the winter solstice. Nimrod was associated with greenery, and was worshipped as the sun idol after he was slain. The "Christmas trees" represented Nimrod to the ancient sun-worshippers (Jer. 10:2-5), and sunrise worship services involving "branches" were even found in Ezek. 8:17, where the priests turned toward the sun with their backs to YHWH"s Temple. The wreaths were emblems of Nimrod, and suggested the round solar shape. Learning that these practices in Rome were in honor of the ancient sun idol, Dionysus Exiguus was shocked and dismayed. Reasoning that it was to be impossible to stand in the way of the frenzied fervor, he sought to "revise" the meaning for it by claiming it to be the celebration of the birth of the Messiah, not the Pagan sun idol, Mithras (Satan) -- thus justifying it by adopting this satanic ceremony into "Christianity" (violating Deut. 12:30,31). He invented the concept of "B.C. & A.D." The apologists call it "inculturation" when we steal a page out of Satan's book and take it as our own. When we peel back the mask or layers which conceal these truths, most people don't want to look at the pure truth straight in the eye. They are disturbed by the "attack" and only want to go back to their slumber of deception. So, they often accuse the messenger as being from a "cult", or hateful, critical, and judgmental.

When we exchange DARKNESS for LIGHT, we can expect eventual woe. The "wiles" of the devil are directed at the children, because he knows that if you train up a child in the way he should go -- he will not depart from it when he is old. "Oh, but its only for the children" they will tell you. The devices, schemes, snares, and wiles of diabolos have most people of the Earth obeying him. "Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves servants for obedience, you are servant of the one whom you OBEY, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?" Romans 6:16

Revising, camouflaging, masking, concealing: this is the process our enemy employs to deceive us. Can we overcome the deceit, or will we drift along with the broad road to destruction? Awaken -- You are dreaming a Babylonian nightmare. There is no mask to peel away from what is True and right; there is no Pagan underpinning to the Truth -- it is clean and pure from its origins.

CHRIST'S MASS

"Christmas" is a Catholic term, part Greek, part Latin. Mixing again. We are not permitted to MIX Paganism with our faith. "Christ" is Greek for anointed, and "mas" is Latin for depart. The Roman "MASS" is another inherited satanic practice from the worship of Mithras (the sun idol again), which was associated with the passover meal called "the last supper". Again, revising things to appear Scriptural, Satan combined (mixed) elements of both religious perspectives to conceal what he was really up to. Revisionism -- modifying religious teachings to fit into a new scheme -- is Satan's best method to deceive mankind. He can make our conscience feel pure and clean as long as he can give us a good reason for something, like he did the first woman. He's still whispering lies to us from the "Christmas tree", and the leaders of Christianity are promoting them to the public. Excusing them is not what we are commanded to do; we are to EXPOSE them for what they really are (Eph. 5:11-13).

Mr. "HO-HO-HO" HO-HO-HO" is another related factor to this cultural event. He's like a hero without a name of his own, an elfish creature linked to a man named "Nicholas". "OLD NICK" is a euphemism for Satan. The story of a "Nicholas" in Holland during the 3rd century who was generous to children is unsubstantiated by anything but relatively recent lore, but Christian he could not have been. Christianity made no inroads into the Norse areas until Patrick during the 8th century. The name "Santa Claus" came from the name "saint Nicholas" as it was pronounced by the Dutch, and taken down as "SAINTNI-CHOLAS" by English people attempting to spell this name. The color RED was brought in to Santa's costume by the COCA-COLA company's marketing department in the 1930's, but it is coincidentally the "seasonal color" inherited from the sun-worshipping Pagans. He flies horned beasts (by sorcery?) through the air at night, and enters homes by means of the fireplace -- the ancient Pagans' most sacred spot in their homes. Who might Santa really be? SATAN & SANTA employ the same letters, and are in perfect order right before your eyes, and all you have to do is move the "N". He's horning into the celebration, but what does he have to do with this time of year, even from the Pagan perspective? (Occultists often use anagrams to conceal what they are referring to). Identifying who he is, and whose birthday December 25th really is, should link up to some conclusions in your mind. He is Nimrod, Baal, Moloch, Zeus, Venus, etc., ----- and these are all really one deceiving being: SATAN.

Christmas? Yes, it's a birthday observance; It's SATAN'S BIRTHDAY.

Our Messiah has nothing to do with it, and never has

Regardless of what Christian teachers may tell you, Christmas was NOT a part of what the early United States of America stood for. The first 13 American Colonies all had laws against this satanic observance, and their faith in the Messiah was the basis for it. One would be fined and/or imprisoned for observing Christmas, because the early American settlers understood that this practice was one of popery's strongest promotions, and that it's origins were PAGAN (therefore satanic). (Popery is tyrannical Nimrodism, and this can be proven to anyone from the book by Alexander Hislop, The Two Babylons. Remember the account of George Washington "crossing the Delaware"? This was the day of the first successful battle in favor of the Colonies, against the Anglican / Catholic British. The enemy army was encamped across the Delaware, and George attacked with his men early in the morning and won the battle -- on CHRISTMAS DAY. The enemy had been celebrating all night, and were in a stupor. The surprise attack caught them off guard, big time.

So, when you hear a Christian talk-show host or a preacher whining about how sad it is that "Christmas" is so secularized -- or that Christians are being deprived of their rights by not being allowed to put up a decoration on public property -- or have a public school play celebrating the birth of "Jesus" (Yahushua ha Mashiach) at this time of year, remember whose birthday it really is, and try to let them know. Not many are bold enough to come out and tell them, but one day the whole Earth will know the Truth, and the Truth will set them free. Traditions come and go; the Truth will never change.

The following letter is a response to a fellow believer who shared the Satan's Birthday article above with the wife of an Orthodox priest. She wrote back to him defending Christmas, and felt that most of my article was filled with nothing but lies. The names have been deleted, but you may find some use for this reply to both of them concerning how to gain a better perspective of the conflicts which rage between traditions and Scriptural Truth. People struggle to defend what should not be defended; the hammer of YHWH's Word can defend itself.

Dear Brother (deleted) and Sister (deleted),

I�m replying to you both in this one letter! I received your letter, Brother (deleted), telling me you had received a response from (deleted) concerning the article Satan�s Birthday. Sister (deleted), you mentioned in your letter to Brother (deleted), (which he asked me to respond to you from) that I may have not known �Satan� was never �born�. In my article I mentioned that this ancient Babylonian Solstice observance was only a �proxy� form of observing this being�s �birthday�. I hope you didn�t really think I was saying the creature was born. Sister (deleted), as I interpret your viewpoint about Christmas, it�s OK for us to observe this formerly Pagan ritual birthday of the sun idol, because it�s now revised in meaning, and applies itself to the true worship of Yahushua, the Mashiach of Israel, and is no longer associated with its origins. Researching the origins of birthdays themselves, they come from Babylonian Astrology, not the guidelines of Scripture. The person led by �tradition� is in the majority, and believes by simply re-naming Saturnalia �Christ�s Mass�, and reinterpreting the symbolic ideas surrounding this solstice festival, we can consider the Paganism purged and rejected, and the formerly Pagan-founded ritual is applied to the observance of the birth of Mashiach, which cleanses the idolatry completely. Amazingly, it was just that simple to do this for every detail of Paganism � this is why Scripture refers to this kind of devious, scheming, misleading behavior as �masquerading�, inheriting lies, strong delusion, washing a pig, returning to vomit, etc.,. If we only take the viewpoint of human tradition, and never question what we have inherited through human designs, we will never see things of the world from the viewpoint of YHWH.

Concerning the lies and falsehood we have inherited, Jer. 16:19 tells us: "In the day of distress the Gentiles shall come to You from the ends of the Earth and say, 'Our fathers have inherited only falsehood, futility, and there is no value in them.'" The verses following this tell us that upon these folks realizing Who He really is, by His hand and might, they shall know that His NAME is YHWH. So, people today worship what they know not what, with great enthusiasm, fervor, and zeal; and are in great ignorance as they do so. What if there was no "Christmas", Sun-day, or Easter? Would the lack of these things ever be considered what the prophet quoted above was referring to?

Most importantly, I would like to point out that we can interpret history differently, but Scripture is what we must use to correct, rebuke, and train. If you or I cite a letter written in the 9th century by a mere man who wrote about someone who lived hundreds of years before and thousands of miles away, how does that really prove a point? We can disagree on the Dutchman, Nicholas; the Catholics teach he was a �saint�, died on December 6th, and was an �elder� (bishop), yet this lad died at the ripe old age of 17. Who cares if its all true, or entirely false? It is not related to anything remotely pertinent to our faith, or spiritual work while in our flesh. Revelation tells us that the dragon has deceived the whole world � how? In my article, I cited Eph. 5:11-13 as it applies to how we are to �expose� the darkness; Jer. 10:2-5 as it applies to the use of the tree in worship (it was a Pagan altar); Ezek. 8:17 as it applies to the sunrise services conducted at �Easter�; Deut. 12:30,31 as it applies to not learning the ways of the Pagans, nor worshipping YHWH in those patterns; and 2 Pet. 2:22 as it clearly warns us to avoid returning to the former Paganism we are delivered from, which Peter likens to a �dog returning to its vomit�. If we clean up a pig (a Pagan festival), it�s still what it is in YHWH�s eyes. Patronizing or condoning traditions which clearly originated in Satanic patterns go against the Spirit we have been given, and the words of life we live by. Idolatry is likened to adultery/harlotry in YHWH�s eyes, and Gentiles engrafting into Israel are to refrain from idolatry (Acts 15). What I would hope to see accomplished by this debate is that YHWH be True, even if all of us turn out to be liars, or deceived in our thinking. I am not trying to win, or make Lew White come out on top � I only speak what I am given to say, and teach the Torah of YHWH as we all are to do. YHWH�s children speak His Words. I am not offended if you believe Constantine had nothing to do with changing the Sabbath to Sun-day, and I am convinced he did. That is simply a difference of opinion of what is fact. If what the article contains goes against any Scripturally-based teachings or values, I would like to be corrected by Scripture if possible. If possible, try to defend Christmas, Sunday, Easter, Holy Water, steeples, bells, wreaths, or the tree using Scripture - and I will stand corrected by the highest of all authorities. If there are Scriptures which condone the adoption of formerly Pagan rituals as long as their purpose is revised, and in the end souls of men are saved through doing so, then we can all return to our �Mother�, the Roman Catholic Curia and Pope rulership. The Roman�Eastern Orthodox schism can be healed again, and all the protestants can once again be re-united with the teachings and authority of Rome.

It is important to emphasize that I am not judging people, but the doctrines of demons which have replaced our Scriptural guidelines. As sheep, we can be deceived very easily without the leadership of our Shepherd. We need to ignore the voices calling to us, and listen only to His Voice. As Sheep, all we require to be deceived is to hear a good excuse. If we are living in the mind of the flesh, our hearts are open to following after whatever the world wants to shovel, because we may be living with a mind set on the flesh, not the Spirit. We are the servants of the one whom we obey (Rom. 6:16); if we have been deceived by human traditions, and not searched-out the origins of what we do and why we do them, we are like blind men. We must test all things. We are doubly deceived if we encounter the Truth, and reject a love for it when we hear it, because then YHWH sends forth the strong delusion that we believe the lie (2 Thess. 2:5-12). The �Truth� is YHWH�s Word, His Torah/Covenant, the 10 Commandments. If Christmas, Sunday, and Easter are not delusions, but rather are found in Scripture, then bring the evidence forth. Worshipping what we do not know can be zealous and sincere, but sincerely wrong and riddled with error. It can also be an abomination, as was the golden calf. Propping up a device or behavior rooted in a Pagan origin and diverted to the worship of YHWH is an abomination � but only in His eyes, not ours (if we can�t see it from His point-of-view). Even adding to His Word and performing something He never asked us to do for Him can lead to death, as we see the in the example from the �strange fire� offered by Aharon�s sons. But transforming a formerly Pagan pattern into a camouflaged man-made device has to be even worse. Many times, the root of our problem stems from simple ignorance � and YHWH�s people are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge. We are guided into �paths of righteousness�, FOR HIS NAME�S SAKE (Ps. 23).

Briefly, I will try to help direct you to some Scriptures to study which opens our understanding of why Father YHWH withheld the knowledge of His Name from the people of Earth. Israel, Father YHWH�s wife/bride, serves as the priesthood to the whole Earth, and the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge. Returning to Pagan practices, the Israelites grew apart from YHWH more and more, as we see Christianity did through the adoption of Pagan elements over the centuries by �revisionism� (changing the reason behind the act).

If we are YHWH�s people, He says we will know His Name (Is. 52.6). If we are not engrafted into Israel, we are not His people, His chosen ones. There is no promise or covenant with anyone outside of Israel, and Gentiles must engraft to partake of the promises and Covenant (Romans 11).

Through stammering lips and a foreign tongue, Israel will eventually learn and the battle for who they serve will turn (Is. 28). He guides us into paths of righteousness �for His Name�s sake� (Ps. 23). Jeremiah (YirmeYahu) 23:27 tells us that the association with Baal (LORD) worship caused the people to �forget� YHWH�s Name. Many of the prophets were persecuted for using the Name. Zeph. 3:9 tells us we will call on the Name eventually, after our lips are purified. Ezk. 39 states YHWH will make His Name known.

If you have access to an exhaustive concordance, you can do a wonderful study on the Name by looking at the many Scriptural references where the words Name, lips, and call are used by the translators. Essentially, it is my opinion that YHWH removed His Name from the lips of people because they were headed �back to Egypt� by being drawn into Pagan practices. Literally, �making an alliance with Pharaoh� by adopting a Pagan element is the same as satanism, so YHWH would remove His Name from those lips. As we draw closer to Him, YHWH reveals Himself in ever-increasing measure. Finally, He revealed Himself to us through His Son, Yahushua ha�Mashiach of Natsrith.

Sister (deleted), we all stumble in many matters; but we serve the same Mashiach. Our need to rush to point out perceived errors must be tempered with sincere love for one another, not motivated by selfish ambition. We have to accept correction with humility, but this correction needs to come from �the Word�, as we are told at 2 Tim 4. Arguing over how we are to conduct ourselves with human reasoning is probably a dangerous and pointless endeavor. After carefully scanning your letter and accompanying article, I found not one Scripture referred to; but this is not to criticize, but to remind you about the importance of keeping on the correct path for proper methods in correction, but more importantly to establish correct doctrine. I�m not out to win an argument or hurt your feelings, only to establish the Truth. I would never accuse you of lying, but rather having opinions which are very popular, and quite different from mine. May we all serve Yahushua in ever-increasing unity of faith, resulting in obedience He finds acceptable.

Our receiving a love for it, and having it written on our hearts and minds, IS the New Covenant - Hebrews 10:16, 2 Cor. 3:3.
