     Fire building is a good skill to learn.  The easiest way I believe to make a fire by friction ember is with the bow drill.
The type of woods and conditions are critical to the building of the ember.  Also technique.  It is best to start off with wood like Poplar, cedar, and sassafras.  The wood must be conditioned so that it is almost to the stage of rotting.  There are four parts to the bow drill in the picture below. The spindle, the bow, the baseboard, and the hand socket.  Practice makes perfect!!

That was a damn heavy rock that we carried for the reflector.  Always have a reflector.
