The fable of Kakkodi grama panchayat originated from the banks of Poonur River. During the age old times, the yearly flooding often caused huge destruction to both animal & human life. Later in 1961, a causeway was constructed to save the village from heavy overflow.’Badirusseri Nair’s were the landlords at that period. Before the era of Samoothiri, ’Porlathiri’ ruled the village. But being candid & upright to themselves, Porlathiri could not withstand the aggravation of Samoothiri. At the end Kakkodi came under the hands of Samoothiri King.
The coir matting was the primary occupation of people especially of women. The farmers set to agricultural programmes as early as in 1932. The Indian National Congress started a provincial committee in the village. Kakkodi art forms were conducted under the headship of village library.
Kakkodi stands in prominent position as far as literacy is concerned. Well known educational institutions at those days were Makkada West Hill L P School, Kakkodi and the Boys & Girls School. The schools were under the control of elite groups in the area. After the British rule, English medium schools came into existence. Panchayath school teachers were given only pity amount as their wages. The Ex minister Joseph Mundasseri‘s educational strategy for raising the salary of school teachers raised the teachers pride.
As two-third of Kakkodi land was surrounded by river. The people used water transportation to meet their day to day merriments and also to reach the destinations like Kozhikode, Elathur, and Thalakulathoor panchayath. The cast disparities were under control in the village. As more and more people got the opportunities to be educated, the sense of liberty and freedom was prevalent and there were strong improvements of independence struggle. The British dammed the Malayalam dailies and only the English daily namely ‘Mail’ was made available.
Panchayath offered equal opportunities and importance to all castes and religions. After education, majority of the youth attracted to Indian independence struggle. There was the Kakkodi library as were people from distant places came just for reading. The Library acted as the for the youth for initiating cultural activities. From 1930 on words the Library conducted Hindi lectures, spinning classes & khadi distribution .The most memorable factor in the cultural heritage of Kakkodi panchayath was nothing but the collective activism of people in the Independence movement. |
