1. Elements of art:  the tools, parts or ingredients that an artist uses to create a work of art

2.  Principles of art:  the rules, directions, or guidelines which an artist uses to create a work of art

            MEDIA – plural of medium; means more than one material

                   Types of medium/media:  pencil, colored pencil, crayon, markers,

                                                    watercolor paint, Tempera paint, acrylic paint, stone, metal,

                                                   clay,  Model Magic

 5.  Line – the path a moving dot travels

              a.  Line Directions (what direction it travels in):  Horizontal     Vertical    Diagonal

  b.  Line Types (what kind of line you can draw):  Straight, Curved, Zigzag  (regular and irregular)

6. Contour Line:  the outline of a shape or the edges of a shape or form

       Contour Drawing – drawing an object as though your drawing tool (pencil) is moving

                                along ALL the edges and ridges of the form or shape

7.  Composition – an artist’s plan for drawings, paintings, and other artworks to help them

                    communicate their ideas and feelings;  can be an actual piece of artwork

8.  Technique – the process or HOW an artist creates a work of art

9.  Subject:  WHAT an artist shows in a work of art

     Portrait, self-portrait, Landscape, Seascape, Cityscape, Genre (people at work, people at play, etc.)

10. BALANCE:  the arrangement of the parts of an artwork to give an overall sense of

                   equality in visual weight; a principle of art

11-13   Three Kinds of Balance

a.       Symmetrical – a type of balance in which the elements on both sides of a center line are similar or identical

b.      Asymmetrical – a type of balance in which two sides of an artwork are not alike but carry equal or nearly equal visual weight

c.      Radial – a type of balance in which lines or shapes spread out from a center point in a regular pattern

 

14. Tessellation – a pattern of shapes that fits together in a way that leaves no space

                           in between the shapes               Artist:  M. C. Escher

15. Calligraphy – the art of fine handwriting

16. Space:  areas that are full or empty, far away or near by, huge or small;  An element of art

       Types of Space: 

a. Positive space:  shapes, forms, or lines that stand out from the background

b. Negative space:  the empty space around and between forms or shapes in an artwork

17. SHAPE – p. 281  a flat two-dimensional area with height and width, which might

                  have an edge or outline around it; an element of art

18-19. TYPES OF SHAPES:

         a.     Geometric- shapes which are precise and mathematical; can be defined by a

                 mathematical formula and has names to identify them:  circle, square, rectangle

                               

        b.  Organic or free-form:  shapes which are irregular and uneven; can not be defined by

                                         mathematical name or  formula

                        

 

20-23  Value:  the lightness or darkness of a color

       Two types of value

                  Tint:  a light value  (White)

                  Shade:  a dark value (Black)

 

24 Still Life:  an artwork showing an arrangement of nonliving objects, such as fruit, foods, bottles, books, or cut flowers

 

25  Focal Point:  a way to show emphasis in an artwork in which the artist sets an element apart from the others to set up a center of interest

 

26  Emphasis:  importance given to certain objects or areas in an artwork; a principle

27 Sculpture – an artwork made by modeling, carving or joining materials into a three-dimensional form

28 Clay (Medium) – a powdery substance found in Earth that becomes pliable when moistened and   then hardens when baked.  Used to create artworks such as sculptures and pottery.

29 Pinch Method- a way of shaping a ball of clay into Pottery by pinching, pulling, and Pressing it with the hands

30 Coil Method – rolling, squeezing or extruding clay into a snake-like or sausage-like coil

31 Scoring:  making clay surface rough

32 Slip:  clay diluted with water to consistency of cream

33 “SLIP AND SCORE”:  the process used to join two pieces of clay together by scoring both parts to be joined and then applying slip and pressing forming together for a strong attachment

34 Plastic:  second stage of clay when it is soft and bendable.

35 Greenware: clay pottery which has not been fired in a kiln but is completely dried; Can be wet back to squishy clay state

     e.Progressive – in decreasing or increasing steps

26 Mola:  hand woven designs out of layers of different colors 

27 Abstract:  a style of art that is not realistic; usually contains geometric shapes or forms

28 Simplification:  a technique or way of drawing in which details are not show; only the major shapes are drawn

29 Emphasis – Importance given to certain objects or areas in an artwork.  Color, texture, shape, space and size can be used to create dominance, contrast, or a focal point.

30 Ceramics:  the art of making objects from clay and hardening them with extreme heat.  Also artworks such as sculptures and pottery

31 Relief Sculpture:  a type of sculpture in which forms project from background and are meant to be seen from one side

32 Hieroglyphics- form of writing in which picture symbols represent ideas and sounds

33 Cartouche – oval frame that contains the name of the ruler

34 Score – to cut or scratch a series of lines into clay surface before putting slip on it. 

                 The small cut lines help the wet slip soak into the drier clay

35 Slip – a creamlike mixture of clay and water that acts as glue to join scored pieces of clay

36 Greenware:  clay that has completely dried; but has not been fired.  Can be wet back to squishy clay state

37  Bisqueware or bisque:  clay that has been fired to make it ceramic;  can not be recycled back into flexible clay

38  Glaze – a thin layer of transparent paint made of minerals.  A glaze can be applied to a piece of pottery, which is then re-fired

39 Glazeware – pottery which has been glazed and fired in kiln

18,  Gesture drawing – a drawing technique in which artists capture a person or

                                 animal and their pose or movement

19.  Movement – the sense of motion or action created in an artwork. 

                        Also, a trend in art is called a movement.

20. Rhythm – the repetition of elements, such as lines, shapes, or colors,

                   that create a feeling of visual motion in an artwork.   A principle of art.  

                    (In music, pattern of a melody)

21.  CONTRAST:  a principle of art which deals with creating a focal point or

                        emphasis by using different sizes, shapes, forms, or colors
