GRADING

Nine week Art grades are based on:

  • Class participation (included in project grades)
  • Homework, Notes, and Warm-Ups  =  20% of Nine Week average
  • Tests  =  30% of Nine Week average
  • Classroom Projects  =  50% of Nine Week average

Art is a core subject in our curriculum, thus, grades are on the same grading scale as other core subjects:

  • A  =  93-100

  • B  =  85- 92

  • C  =  77-84

  • D  =  70-76

  • F  =  Below 70

ART NINE WEEK GRADES ARE NUMERICAL  WITH A CONDUCT GRADE OF S, N, or U.  THIS CLASS CAN AFFECT YOUR HONOR ROLL OR PRINCIPAL LIST STANDING.

Please keep in mind - YOUR BEHAVIOR WILL AFFECT  YOUR ART GRADE.  If you use your time in class wisely, you will complete project assignments in a creative and timely manner.  Unwise use of class time with excessive talk and play will result in incomplete, messy project assignments.  Art is not an automatic "A" for the nine weeks grade - your effort and imagination are needed in order to receive that "A" for the nine weeks.

Homework

Purposes:

  • To practice observation skills,
  • To practice "quick" drawings,
  • To try out new ideas; and
  • To create a record of student improvement.

EXPECTATIONS

  • Give your best effort;

  • Pencil only, unless instructed to add color;
  • At least 15 minutes work done at home;
  • Concentrate entirely on what you are doing;
  • Have the object or thing you are drawing in front of you so you can look at what you are drawing;
  • All free hand drawing, no tracing.

ORGANIZATION

  • Each assignment should be label with the date of assignment and student signature as artist.
  • Use only one page for each assignment. Do not use front and back of pages.
  • Draw the assignment large by filling at least half of the page.
  • Keep your assignments in order from the front of the book.

Homework Grading

All sketch book grades will be based on effort and timeliness.  Out of 100 points, each sketchbook entry is worth 4 points.  NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED UNLESS YOU HAVE AN EXCUSED ABSENCE.  Homework assignments are given on each MONDAY for the entire week.  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPLETE YOUR HOMEWORK.

  • A  (4 points) = Subject based on assignment; effort, concentration, and skill/ability is high.
  • B (3 points) = Subject based on assignment; effort, concentration and skill/quality is good.
  • C (2 points) = Subject based on assignment; effort, concentration, and skill/quality is average.
  • D (1 point) = Subject is not based on assignment; skill/quality is low, but effort was made.
  • F (0 points) = Missing sketchbook entry; no effort was made.

REMEMBER it is important to do EVERY assignment.  If you do each assignment to the best of your ability, you will always have a good grade on your sketchbook.

ART ROOM ACTIVITIES

In Sixth Grade classes, students will be introduced to the elements and principles of art.  As a part of this introduction, students will experience Cave art, Impressionist art, and Modern art to gain an understanding that artists throughout time, cultures, and places use the elements and principles of art in their creations of works of art.  Sixth Grade will focus on long term projects which involve multiple procedures.  These projects will help students recognize that art is a universal language.

In Seventh Grade, students will continue in their exploration of art throughout cultures, times, and places by expanding their drawing experiences with hatching, crosshatching, and stippling techniques to create value and tone in their works of art.  Students will gain an understanding of the various techniques and styles throughout art history by exploring these in their projects.

In Eighth Grade, students will expand their exploration of art throughout cultures, times, and places.  They will develop their criteria for evaluating and appreciating personal art work and the art work of others.  Projects will expand their use of color, value, and perspective as they experience and expand their knowledge and ability.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

  • 2 wooden pencils (leave the mechanical pencils in your book bag or locker);
  • a 9x12 sketch book/pad (spiral bound hold up better); and
