Willard, Charles Dwight. The Free Harbor Contest at Los Angeles. Los Angeles: Kingsly-Barnes & Nuner Company, 1899.  This work was published in July of 1899 shortly after the decision was made to provide federal funds for the improvement of San Pedro harbor (Wilmington.) It is, “an account of the long fight waged by the people of Southern California to secure a harbor located at a point open to competition.” (i.e. competition between the various railroads in Southern California.) This book contains much original testimony of the railroad barons promoting their ports like Wilmington, Redondo Beach and Santa Monica’s “Long Wharf.”

Occasionally, however, no credit has been given in some of these sources in which case "no credit given" will be noted in parenthesis. Other illustrations were obtained over the Internet. These sources have been cited with the URL used and the date accessed.

When originally found by the author, some of these photos were grayscale (including all the photocopies). Other photographs showed various degrees of browning with age (including many of those from the Bancroft Library). All photographs included in this history have been colorized in a sepia tone for uniformity.
