POMEROYS IN   IRELAND
Reason for British coming to Ireland:
To earn a living either legally or not!!
Civil servants of one kind or another, Army, employees of the "Big House",
                                                   traders and business people

From:"Harriett Pomeroy" June 30th 2003
Regarding the premise that Lt. Samuel Pomeroy of Pallice had a brother Richard.

Harriet is of the opinion that regarding  the  "aristocratic" families she is still thinks that we do not connect to them!!   There was some suggestion that  Samuel Pomeroy was connected to Arthur Pomeroy whose descendant became Lord Harberton.
DNA groups put us in the H1 Haplogroup as distinct from the present-day Harberton connection in H2.

Grove-White in Historical and Topographical Notes On North Cork families mentions Susanna wife of Thos. Campion  and daughter of Samuel Pomeroy and Martha Smith.

Records of Holy Trinity Parish, Cork give Marriage 26 July 1646 Richard Pomery to Margaret Hawker.
Burial 16 June 1662 Margaret wife of Richard Pomery.
Diocese of Cork and Ross. Marriage Licence Bonds 1662 Richard Pomeroy and Joane Latchford (Widow)

Is this the same Richard in the 3 entries? In any case his children would have probably been born around 1650 and maybe a second family 1660's. Maybe one of them was grandfather of  "our" Richard, Henry and Robert.
(As Chuck's "ole" Richard  died around 1850 and both Henry (1) and Robert (1) died about 1810   the latter may have been of an older generation)

unauthenticated 'scribblings' by Robin Pomeroy 's aunt (Mary Pomeroy-O'Brien) which state that Edward Pomeroy married Wilmot Peryman from Devon (no date); they had two sons,
Samuel who married Martha Smith from Pallice, Mallow
Richard who  married Mary Hawks in 1646.  Richard and Mary had three sons -
two Richards (one must have died) and
Henry who was born in 1745 and who 'acquired' Clara in 1787.  Henry had three sons
Richard who married Mary Dunn in 1798,
John

Edward POMEROY
Born   1575 Beenleigh   Manor Nr Harberton
  baptised Brixham 19 Dec 1579?
  buried14 Aug 1645 Stoke Gabriel
married  Wilmot PERYMAN b: Abt 1580  married Drewsteighton Devon 1602

I found a William born on/bef 25 Sep 1606
.
This might be assumed to be son of Edward Pomeroy and Wilmot Periam born on/bef 25 Sep 1606 in Brixham Parish near Totnes, Devonshire, England.
On the other hand there is the possibility that he might be the William Pomeroy of Collaton in Newton Ferrers baptised  22 Oct 1606.)

Harriet wonders where Mary Pomeroy-O'Brien got her info. about Samuel and Richard? She  believes that Mary  and her  grandfather James Pomeroy, Knockcahill were both interested in genealogy but we do not  have any records, maybe any he had were discarded, though she is  sure that her  mother would have kept papers as she was also  interested.

Evidence for Henry and Robert at Clara. Mary Pomeroy- O'Brien did not see a number of entries in the Registry of Deeds in Dublin that clarify some of the names!

Ref: RD(Reg. of Deeds) 1788  391 510 262010 Memorial of Indented deed of Lease 21 June 1787  of Claramore .Ed. Eyre of Linville, Co. Tipperary/Henry Pomeroy of  Millstreet ("and others" later in deed)

Ref: RD 1853    1853 20 261 Reg, 1 August 1853 Incumbered Estates Commission/ Henry Justice. Cites deed of 14 Feb. 1798   between Robert Hedges Eyre and Robert and Richard Pomeroy demising lease of Claramore to them. This deed also refers to a  jointure for Mary Pomeroy widow of Robert Pomeroy deceased, created by an indenture dated 4 July, 1798 and made between Richard Pomeroy of the first part and the said Mary Pomeroy   then Mary Dunne of the second part, Nicholas Dunne Gent. and Thomas Justice of the third part.

Ref: RD 1810     627 106 429778 Richard Pomeroy Gent. of Claramore, Co.Cork/ Samuel Austen  Indented of rent charge on Claramore. Richard Pomeroy was  entitled to Claramore three lives by virtue of lease of  Richard Pomeroy and Robert, his father now deceased.

Ref: RD 1812    654 4 449095 13 April 1810 Indented Deed of Assignment. Shop, outoffices   etc. John Pomeroy, shopkeeper, to Charles Williams citing that   the House etc. had been "demised, granted and set" by John Wallis to Henry Pomeroy on 25 Feb.1797 and was now legally  vested in John Pomeroy.

SO........ Apart from the need of a lawyer to interpret the historical legalese and an expert in reading the handwriting of 200 years ago there is a lot of information there!
Both Henry and Robert's families seemed to "lease for three lives"  and then proceed to borrow from individuals who had spare cash using Clara or the shop as collateral and promise yearly payments of specified amounts. Harriet  supposes that banks may not have been available in country areas. Anyway it seems to have been due to calling in of loans that caused the Govt. of the day to enact the Incumbered Estates laws after the Famine toallow sales of such properties.
CLARA: Robert ( 1), wife unknown, died before 1810. Son Richard  married Mary Dunne, 1798
Sons of Rich. and Mary were Robert, Meredith, Thomas (Meredith  had part of Clara known as The Ole Demesne and in a deed he is  noted as Richard's son. Thomas erected a tombstone "in memory of his father Richard and mother Mary Dunne") HENRY: Was the Henry who leased Clara in 1787 the same man who leased the shop in 1797 and left it to John in 1810? I have always thought that it was but no proof.

Cork Repeal Rents <http://homepage.eircom.net/~ridgway/RepealPQR.htm> Pomeroy, Meredith, 0.2.0, Millstreet, 1843, 1844,
Pomeroy, Richard, 0.2.0, Millstreet, 1843, 1844,

The Vestry Records  for St. Anna's Drishane Parish, (the Church of Ireland church in Millstreet) exists 1801 - early 1900's. Henry Pomeroy  attends meetings up to 1810 and John Pomeroy appears until 1817. Was John son of Henry or perhaps a nephew, son of Robert 1? Who was Jane Pomeroy who married John Payne in Drishane CI 17 Dec 1803. Was she daughter of Henry or Robert?
