Waste Recycling Statistics
Waste reduction and recycling are very important elements of the local waste management framework. They help both to conserve natural resources and to reduce demand for valuable landfill space.
Through the existing informal or voluntary waste recovery system, about 1.76 million tonnes of municipal solid waste was recovered in Hong Kong in 2000. Of that total, 13% was recycled locally and 87% was exported to the Mainland and other countries for recycling, with an export earning of more than HK$2.2 billion for Hong Kong.
The Environmental Protection Department encourages waste reduction and recycling activities. Since 1991 it has provided a hotline service (2755 2750) to help the public organise voluntary waste reduction and recycling programmes. It also provides information on recyclers and technical advice on waste recovery and recycling.
Lack of space for recycling has been a complaint in the past. Under the government's land allocation policy, four lots were allocated in 2000 to recyclers of waste paper, metal, plastics and rubber tyres under short term tenancy arrangements.
