Sex And Politics

I bet I can guess why you chose this link: SEX!!!  Although sex is a very popular topic with young adults, it also relates to politics in a very easy way-- and more importantly, it relates to you!  Did you know that President Clinton and the U.S. government are currently planning and executing a national strategy towards the education of teenagers about sex?  This  strategy includes a variety of issues that you deal with everyday, such as:

1)  Should schools be teaching abstinence or safe sex?
2)  Does your school have a good sex education program?
3)  The problem of condom distribution in schools-- does it reduce underage births or add to the problem of premarital teenage sex?

On this page you can find out what your peers think about these issues, learn more about the government's national strategy, and find out about some cool web sites that you can look at to give your own opinion.  Sound cool?  Keep on scrolling...

Should schools be teaching abstinence or safe sex?

In a news story in the internet magazine Highwire.net, many different voices were heard.  This internet newspaper is a school newspaper that represents all 50 states.  One group of students and teachers feel that abstinence is unrealistic, and safe sex should be taught for the protection of the students.  Another group of students and teachers feel that schools should promote abstinence but teach safe sex.  Finally, another group felt that schools should teach both sides because if the students can learn and know all their options -- they will make well informed choices.  Check out Highwire.net for more information.

Does your school have a good sex education program?

Some students feel that if America's schools had a better sex education program, then the rate of teenage pregnancy would not be so high.  These teens feel that sex education is very important so students know about sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, and their options for safe sex.  At the web site Familyeducation.com students laid out what they thought a sex education program needed to be successful- check it out and put your two cents in!

Condom distribution in schools-- does it reduce teenage births or add to the problem of premarital teenage sex?

On the web site Familyeducation.com, this question was put on a message board and the replies starting pouring in.  From adults to teenagers to preteens, everyone's voice got heard.  There were, of course, two sides.  Some people said that if condoms are being passed out in schools, the wrong message is being sent: that it is okay to have premarital sex.  Others argued that if a school is going to teach safe sex, they need to back it up and by passing out condoms the school's message will be more effective.  Do you have an opinion on this matter that you want to share with the world?  Go to www.Familyeducation.com, and have your voice heard!

The bigger issue: National Strategy to prevent teen pregnancy...

President Clinton and the U.S. government have also taken a look at the issues we just discussed; and they decided, with the help of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to propose a national strategy to prevent teen pregnancy.  This national strategy includes strengthening the national response to prevent out of wedlock teen pregnancies, and supporting and encouraging adolescents to remain abstinent.  The main message is to tell teens to stay in school, postpone sexual activity, and to prepare themselves for work in the real world.  This national strategy has five key principles: parental and adult involvement, abstinence, clear strategies for the future, community involvement, and sustained commitment on the part of the teen.  Want to know more?
