This is a question that almost perpetually rattles through our mortality. What if I had bought that car instead of this one? What if I hadn't gotten into that accident? What if I had bought the other eggs, the ones without salmonella?
On a lager scale, What if I had voted differently in the last election? Would it have made a difference (You'd be surprised)? What if others had too, what if that fellow was governor, mayor, councilman instead of this one? What about the presidency?
This is the composition of alternate history. To some it is an 'Idle Parlor game,' to others a tool essential to the proper understanding of History as it is.
This website is devoted to it in all of its applications: as a Literary Genre, in which it is a useful manipulation of setting which allows the author to examine a situation that our line of History finds alien. The book Ressurection Day, by Brendan Dubuois, does this expertly. Alternate History can be used as Social Commentary or Historical Evaluation. This is no idle parlor game, this is a tool which might be used to examine mankind further.
