Earning a well deserved Second place as a long piece in the Sidewise Award the book 'Ruled Britannia' by Harry Turtledove is one of the finer pieces of Alternate History out there.

Personally I am no fan of Mr. Turtledove, considering him overratted as a writer and sometimes as a historian. Regardless '
Ruled Britannia' is an excellent book, well befitting a man who would see himself as the master of the genre.

The book follows the exploits of another writer, William Shakespeare, as he lives and writes under Spanish rule imposed by the victorious Armada. The descriptions of subjugated Britain are respectable, the riot scene descriptions show Mr. Turtledove's ever increasing powress in the area of descibing riots.

By far this is his best writing that Turtledove has supplied the reading community. Where the actual writing of the
American Empire and, though I love the idea, the WorldWar/Colinization serieses is at best questionable, in Britannia Turtledove dons a far more enjoyable and comprehensable style.
