History of the choir

Formation
The Plymouth Area Police Choir was initially formed in September 1972.

The membership is made up of:

  • Serving and retired police officers, traffic wardens and support staff of the: Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Ministry of Defence Police, British Transport Police
  • Invited members of musical ability, who are committed to the objectives of the Choir

The Choir, numbering over fifty members, have held all ranks from Constable to Assistant Chief Constable, and though they proudly wear the uniform of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, no service ribbons or badges of rank are worn to confirm the comradeship of the members. The Choir has an informal dress of green blazers, emblazoned with their crest, incorporating the Arms of the City of Plymouth.

Choir Objectives
The Choir was formed and exists to:

  • Provide members with the recreational facilities of good choral singing
  • Assist in fundraising for Police and other charities
  • Foster good Police and Community relations

Concerts and Events
The Choir has given concerts in all parts of Devon and Cornwall and has sung further a field in other parts of the United Kingdom. The Choir has sung twice at the Royal Albert Hall in 1987 and 1990 with the massed choirs of the British Police Choirs.

In recent years the members have visited and sung in France, Holland and Germany and maintains contacts in Enschhede, Celle and Bielefeld. Exchange visits have taken place and in 1982 the Choir sang to an audience of 3000 in Wiesbaden, Germany for the World Congress of the International Police Association; a repeat concert was given in Bournemouth in 2000 for the same organisation.

The Choir have entered a number of prestigious Music Festivals and competitions. In 1992 they entered and were successful at the Cheltenham Music Festival, winning the Gold Cup; the Choir is still the reigning Cornwall Champions.

In response to many requests from audiences the Choir have produced a number of recordings on compact discs (CDs) and tapes. These are sold at the concerts given by the Choir and have proved very popular, due to the quality and variety of the repertoire.

In the summer of 2008 the choir will be touring Brittany prior to the start of the 2008-9 season!!
