The Frequently Asked Questions

KazaaLite FAQ

Why does AdAware say KazaaLite has spyware in it?
What's the deal with cydoor/cd_clint.dll?

Mentioned a million times by now. KaZaA (and thus KazaaLite) needs cd_clint.dll (it's an adware/spyware component) to run. But KaZaA is too dumb to know if the cd_clint.dll is the right (functioning or castrated) cd_clint.dll. So the author(s?) of KazaaLite have kindly inserted a castrated version of cd_clint.dll into the install. So now you have a cd_clint.dll file, which makes KaZaALite happy (and functional); and it's been castrated, had it's function removed, so you are now happy (no adware or spying).

Sadly, adaware is also a little primative, it can't tell the difference between the two either. So, you have to add the file (cd_clint.dll) to AdAware's ignore list.

Not sure you have the functioning or dummy cd_clint.dll? Download the dummy file here ( http://cexx.org/dummies.htm ) and replace the questionable cd_clint.dll file. The real one is ~200kb - ~150kb, the dummy is ~48kb.

Why was KazaaLite made?

"For the same reason as the one why CNET has recently removed KaZaA from its download listings. Alongside the original KaZaA some third party software is distributed. This normally would not be an issue for me since it is mentioned in KaZaA's legal notice. But in this case this third party software severly threatens our privacy. The software from Brilliant Digital goes even beyond that point, acting more and more like a virus. The real workings of these third party software is not sufficiently explained to the end users by KaZaA. The legal notice is very long and difficult to understand, particularly for those whose native language is not English. Fact is that most users of KaZaA don't even know that there were some third party software installed by KaZaA, or more important what that software does. When KaZaA is uninstalled, the third party software is not removed. Removing all traces of this third party software is very difficult, even the biggest computer geeks have troubles with it. Virtually impossible for an average user.
KaZaA should make very clear what is installed alongside the KaZaA client itself and what that additional software does, before an end user downloads or installs the KaZaA client software. This way an end user has the choice of using the KaZaA client including all third party software, or not using the KaZaA at all.
Until this happens I am giving the people a choice to be able to use the KaZaA client without being mislead by KaZaA.

It is not my intention at all to stop KaZaA from earning advertising revenue. In fact, I am thankfull to KaZaA for creating their great software and the FastTrack network. I only want to make clear that KaZaA has to stop misleading the people who use their software. The majority of the users of KaZaA Lite abandoned KaZaA long before KaZaA Lite was created for the reasons I have outlined above. Or they previously did not wanted to use KaZaA because they were aware of its implications. KaZaA Lite users now are a part of the network. The increased number of users on the network due to KaZaA Lite is beneficial for KaZaA, since a large network attracts new users."

Quote from the creator of KaZaA Lite.
Yuri from Moscow, Russia.

"KaZaA, the way P2P should be". I hope this becomes true in the future.

Is this the official website of KazaaLite?

No. In fact, there is no official website for KaZaA Lite., but you can find other fan sites at:

I have problems connecting with KazaaLite.

- If you are using the ZoneAlarm firewall, that is probably causing your problems.
In ZoneAlarm Pro go to the 'Options' menu for Kazaa Lite. You'll see two tabs. One is labled Ports, the other is Security. Click on Security. Now, you'll see that Kazaa Lite is set to "Authenticate Program and Components". Uncheck that and check the middle circle instead, labled "Authenticate Program Only". Don't click the third choice, because that supposedly leaves you open to spoofers.
- If you are using Windows XP, make sure you have the internal firewall of XP disabled.
- Otherwise, if you use a proxy server, you might have forgot to input your proxy settings in KaZaA Lite. Go to options, firewall tab and fill in the settings.

I have problems starting KazaaLite.

There is some kind of bug in version 3 of ZoneAlarm Pro that is causing this.
A new version of ZoneAlarm Pro has been released recently that fixes these problems.

Why do some files appear multiple times in 'My Files'?

This happens when both a folder and one or more of its subfolders are on the list of shared folders. When you share a folder, all its subfolders are automaticly shared too. So just remove those subfolders from the shared list and everything should be working fine again.

What IS BDE/Brilliant Designs/B3D?

A company that aims to take over part of your machine, and sell the unused cycles to somebody else. Think of it as being a part of the SETI@home project, or any other distributed computer project, only it's run by some shady guys you never heard of using software you didn't agree to install doing things you'll not be allowed to know. Some say your machine will be used to basically become an adserver. Others say you'll be doing number crunching for some secret company. Others speculate you'll be a distributed content provider. In all, it's not something you really want to be a part of.

Altnet seems to be the name of the thing BDE will do when it gets turned on. Official reports say it will be a distributed fileshare/storage area with copyright management tools. Unofficial reports say it will turn your machine and millions of others in to the biggest baddest adserver ever. Either way, you don't want to be there.

How does BDE/Brilliant/kazaa install on my machine?

Essentially Brilliant/Kazaa installs the B3Dinstaller onto your machine in multiple ways. Via the Kazaa installer. Whenever you visit the Kazaa homepage. And some are now saying when you simpy use Kazaa itself. The B3D installer insterts a whole stack of programs, files, and registry keys onto your machine which will one day soon activate and do something that nobody seems to know yet. Some say that day is 3 weeks from now (4/5/2002).

Does KazaaLite have BDE/B3D in it?

Near as we can tell, KazaaLite 1.5.1 builds 1-10 are clean as clean can be. KazaaLite 1.5.1 build 11 and KazaaLite 1.6 build 1-3 I can't confirm (or deny), but since the dude making kazaaLite is dedicated to getting rid of nasty stuff like this, it's safe to say that he wouldn't release any version of KazaaLite if he didn't think it was clean. HOWEVER, since KazaaLite is just a hack of Kazaa, there's always a chance of some nasty stuff still hidden inside the core of KazaaLite. Check the forum at http://www.refosearch.tk periodically for the latest info.

How do I know if I'm infected with BDE?

Do a search of your computer for any files with BDE in them. A few Microsoft installer keys will have the letters bde in them (MSXBDE40.DLL for example), BDE also can stand for Borland Database Engine, but overall BDE means bad stuff (ex: bdesecureinstall.exe, bdeverify.exe, bdeverify.dll). Under Settings, Add/Remove Programs there will also be something called B3d Projector.

How do I remove BDE/B3D/Brilliant stuff?

You can download the automatic uninstaller at:
http://members.rogers.com/napho/b3dkiller.exe
http://www.geocities.com/poiuyt_1940/b3dkiller.exe
http://javacool1.freeservers.com/

Or check out the short and sweet method I found on a forum: Quick BDE Removal Instructions

Instructions from CNET.com:
CNET Networks assumes no liability in publishing these instructions, which people may choose to follow at their own risk. As always, it's a good idea to make a backup of any critical files before proceeding.

1. In the Windows Control Panel, select an option called "Add/Remove Programs." One of the options will be "b3d Projector." Highlight this and click the "Change/Remove" button.

You may get a message that the uninstall has been successful. Search your computer for a "BDE" folder, which most likely will be found in the "WinNT" or "Windows" directory. In this folder will be a file called "bdeclean.exe". Run this to finish the first part of the process. Delete the BDE folder.

Caution: An unrelated piece of software called Borland Database Engine also creates a BDE directory. If you think you may have this software installed, or if there is any confusion whatsoever, do not delete this directory.

2. In the "Temp" directory (this will normally be found inside the "Windows" or "WinNT" directory) is a folder called "Brilliant." This contains many files. Delete the entire folder.

3. After performing steps 1 and 2, you will need to locate and remove some additional Brilliant Digital files that have been placed in critical system-level computer directories. CAUTION: Deleting the wrong files could interfere with the normal functioning of your computer. These files will most likely be in the "WindowsSystem" or "WinNTSystem32" folder:

bdedownloader.dll
bdedata2.dll
bdefdi.dll
bdeinsta2.dll
bdeinstall.exe
bdesecureinstall.cab
bdesecureinstall.exe
bdeverify.exe
bdeverify.dll

Delete these files.

I used b3dkiller.exe, but I found BDE - Borland Database Engine on my machine. What is this?

This is a component in the Borland C++ compiler that is used to write programs for windows (and other) systems. Borland C++ compiler is a very populor programming tool, and Borland is a respectable company. The BDE-Borland Database Engine is probably a part of any number of programs you use (or may have written yourself), and should not be deleted. As far as anybody knows, the Borland Database Engine is NOT part of the BDE/B3dProjector/Brilliant spyware. Read more about it at http://www.borland.com/devsupport/bde/bdeupdate.html.

How can I prevent BDE/B3dProjector/Brilliant from installing?

Use KazaaLite.
The traditional answer was to do the http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,2946108~root=poll,swapping~mode=flat ) that this does not work with Kazaa 1.6 or Kazaa 1.5. So far nobody using KazaaLite (any version any build) has reported any problems. The current thinking is that cloudload.dat, a component of KaZaA which appears to act as a loading engine for other bad stuff, has been disabled in KazaaLite, and that is why kazaaLite users are unaffected. So the answer would seem to be to use KazaaLite. Other suggestions are to add b3d.com, www.b3d.com, and brilliantdigital.com to the hosts list.
This problem might be more pronounced on people running as supernodes, as people with nice dsl/cable/t1 connections are most probably big into filesharing and the first to report problems to the forums. And supernodes (if you have a big pipe, your machine essentially gets "elected" to be a supernode unless you disable that option) would be the primary targets of BDE, as it would be silly to try and take over somebody connecting via a 36.6 modem (me!).

What other spyware does KaZaA install?

KaZaA comes bundled with a number of nasty stuff. Not all of it has been documented yet. However besides BDE, KaZaA seems to install Media Charger, Movienetworks, Downloadware, and New.Net (NewDotNet) software as well.

How do I remove MediaCharger/Movienetworks/and other Downloadware?

Instructions to remove MediaCharger, Movienetworks, and Downloadware unauthorized programs/spy-adbots

Limited disclaimer, use at your own risk, nothing should be able to be affected by these actions, but in case you mess up (or god forbid I missed something) then the mess is all yours. I'm just trying to help but I am human and do make mistakes (which is why I double check everything)

I've used these exact actions to remove the programs from my computer

ok first, open IE go to tools->internet options->security->and click custom for each zone, and make sure to check prompt for both of the first 2 options(download signed activeX and unsigned activeX) this is the only way to keep this mess out... you are likely to see a lot more warning windows pop up while you are browsing now) click ok. on the first tab, choose delete temp internet files. close IE

next, open c:\program files\ and see if there are folders for 'movienetworks' and/or 'downloadware' as well as MedCh, if found delete the movienetworks folder and MedCh, leave the downloadware folder for a moment if found, and go to the control panel->add/remove programs , click on downloadware, and click remove. it may open a webpage, just close it (or feel free to complain in the provided space) then go back and make sure the folder is gone too.

next is c:\windows\downloaded program files, there should be a file that looks like this {EB6AFDAB-E16D-430B-A5EE-0408A12289DC} right click the properties, if the general tab has 'codebase: http://download.mediacharger.com/movinetworks.' that is the one you want to remove.

next open start->run and type msconfig and hit ok, move to the start up tab and look for WebInstall2, (go ahead and uncheck the box next to it we'll remove it completely in a second.) next to that it will tell you the filename, located in c:\windows\temp\ named something like ins1234.tmp, go to that folder and delete that file, and any others with a similiar name (always ????????.tmp mostly starting with ins, rem or tem followed by numbers) if it won't delete, press ctrl+alt+del 1 time, and if it's running select it and choose end task, then go and delete it. click ok in the msconfig panel, when it asks if you want to restart now click no.

next is for semi experienced users. if you have never edited your windows registry, or are unsure of yourself at all dont do it, just restart your computer. making a mistake here could make your computer unbootable.

go back to start->run and type in regedit and press ok. press ctrl+f and enter 'downloadware' make sure to search for keys, data, and values. press find next, if it finds it right click the folder(key) it finds and select delete, click yes to delete, then press f3 to keep searching, keep doing that until you get 'finished searching the registry' or 'not found'. then scroll back to the top, click on my computer (in regedit) and search (and destroy) the following words in the same manner (without the quotes)

'mediacharger'
'movienetworks'
'webinstall'
'{EB6AFDAB-E16D-430B-A5EE-0408A12289DC}'
'{1F84A44F-9E80-4BED-954A-16337FBB5414}'
'conflict.17'

afterwards close regedit and restart your computer. done

How do I remove new.net (aka newdotnet)?

Depending on your expertise, there are several instructions to choose from:

The abbreviated Official Instructions (for newbies)

If your computer has access to the Internet, then it is recommended to update our software first so that a proper uninstall may occur. Please visit http://www.new.net and click on Enable your browser in the top right corner of any one of our pages. Please follow the prompts to install our software. After installation, please reboot your computer. If you no longer receive any error messages then uninstall New.net by selecting New.net Application through Add/Remove Programs.

If the error messages persist and you are still unable to uninstall our plug-in then please follow the steps below:
THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE ONLY TO BE USED IF UNINSTALL DOES NOT WORK

If you have a question or are not sure about a particular step, please ask as soon as possible. Also, if you would rather a technician walk you through this procedure over the phone; please call us at (818) 385-2000, Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm Pacific Standard Time.

Create a backup Registry file in case you experience further problems:
Click Start -> Run -> Type in "regedit" -> Click OK
Highlight "My Computer"
Click the Registry menu, select "Export Registry File"
Name the file "backup" and save it to your Desktop.

Check for New.net Startup:
In the left pane of the Registry Editor, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click the "+" sign next to Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version
Click on the Run folder
Locate the line that reads "New.net Startup" and delete it

Remove "New.net Application" from Add/Remove Programs:
Under the same Current Version folder from above, click the "+" sign next to Uninstall
Locate the "New.net" folder and delete it.

Remove the New.net software folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, under "Software"
Locate the "New.net" folder and delete it

Locate "Catalog Entries" folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, click the small "+" (plus) sign next to System -> CurrentControlSet -> Services -> WinSock2 -> Parameters.
Click the small "+" signs next to "NameSpace_Catalog5" and "Protocol_Catalog9".
Inside both folders, you should see a "Catalog_Entries" folder. Open each of them.
Within each of those folders are numbered folders (i.e. 000000000001, 000000000002, etc.)
First, make note of how many folders there are

For the "NameSpace_Catalog5" numbered folders:
Highlight the first one, locate the line "Library Path"
In that line, the rightmost column should begin with something similar to "C:\windows" or "%SystemRoot%".
Locate any of the numbered folders that read "C:\windows\newdotnet2_109.dll" (or similar) in the "Library Path" line
Delete only those folders referring to "newdotnet"
If needed, rename each numbered folder so that they are all consecutive. For example, if there were 4 folders and you deleted the first 2, you will need to rename the remaining folders "000000000001" and "000000000002".
(Do this by right-clicking the folder name, left-click Rename and then type in the new number (be absolutely sure you don't delete any of the zeros).)

Next, highlight the "NameSpace_Catalog5" folder on the lefthand side.
Double-click "Num_Catalog_Entries"
In the small pop-up window, select "Decimal"
Edit the value of the number on the left to reflect the number of remaining folders (in the case of the example above, you would enter 2)

For the "Protocol_Catalog9" numbered folders:
First, make note of how many folders there are
Highlight the first one, double-click "PackedCatalogItem".
In this window, several columns appear. At the top of the last column appears a path that will say, "C:\WINDOWS\NEWDOTNET~.DLL" or "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM..." followed by a long list of characters.
Look through each of the numbered folders and delete only those that indicate "C:\WINDOWS\NEWDOTNET~.DLL" in the "Edit Binary Value" window described above. In other words, if you find a reference to "NEWDOTNET..." in the "Edit Binary Value" window, close the window first (click "Cancel"), then highlight the numbered folder on the left you were checking and delete it. If the folder does not say "C:\WINDOWS\NEWDOTNET..." in the TOP RIGHT corner only, DO NOT delete it. NOTE: You should find it in either 2 or 4 folders total. If you do not, double-check the folders and if it's still the same, just move on to the next step.
Rename each remaining numbered folder so that they are all consecutive. For example, if there were 13 folders and you deleted 2 of them, you will need to rename the remaining folders "000000000001" through "000000000011". (**be absolutely sure you don't delete any of the zeros).

Next, highlight the "Protocol_Catalog9" folder on the lefthand side.
On the right, Double-click "Num_Catalog_Entries"
In the small pop-up window, select "Decimal"
Edit the value of the number on the left to reflect the number of remaining folders (in the case of the example in step F above, you would enter 11)

Close the Registry Editor. Your changes will be automatically saved. Reboot your computer and attempt to access a website. See Step 6 (Registry backup) above if you experience other unusual computer problems. If your Internet access has been restored, we recommend you delete the registry backup file on the desktop.

Please let us know if this helps and if you have any further problems or questions.

I used the kazaa crack. / I got a crack from Cracks.am, and it doesn't work.

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=kazaa+uninstall&hl=en&selm=3c8d7eae.6323557%40netnews.attbi.com&rnum=2
From: thrasher ([email protected])
Subject: Re: KaZaA-plugin from Cracks.am is NOT a crack; it's like AOL from hell, plus changes desktop & BIOS
Newsgroups: alt.2600.crackz
View: (This is the only article in this thread) | Original Format

'Did a little research:

Lotsa stuff at cracks.am is probably ok but the KaZaA Media Desktop crack people go looking for there doesn't exist yet. What you get instead is an extremely intrusive application called kazaa_plugin or something like that at about 101 Kb. It may have nothing to do with Kazaa but I got pissed and removed all the Kazaa stuff too. I never viewed the crap long enough to see who the assholes are that make that shit. Clue me in. I don't intend to install it again.

Among other things it installs b3d Projector (streaming and viewing made by Brilliant Digital Entertainment) and lopsearch (made by a security/encryption firm in Cape Town). This and more is installed to your entire Windows system in what must be the most shameless, brazen exploitation of trust ever seen by Netizens (written tongue in cheek). Without prompting it installs crap all over your desktop, in autostart and in program files, eg, porn, games, gambling, shopping, that fucking monkey, etc... It also changes your BIOS and the display settings so the desktop is slowed down.

I think this'll just about take care of most of the shit if you want to really clean things up:

Uninstall Kazaa then run Ad-aware (this will only remove a part of the Kazaa stuff in the registry, etc)

Uninstall lopsearch (or whatever it's called). You'll have to search for the uninstall in Windows folders cause it's not in install/uninstall in control panel. Uninstall b3d Projector in control panel.

Search the registry for kazaa (be careful here). At HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\KaZaA you'll find "FirewallStatus" and what must be an ENTIRE application, albeit a small one. Delete the shit. Search the registry for BDE or brilliant and delete whatever you find.

Go to control panel, display, web. Uncheck "view my active desktop as a web page" and click ok. This should speed up the desktop.

Reboot and go to BIOS (push delete or whatever). In chipset features you want both Video BIOS and Video RAM cacheable ENABLED. In PNP/PCI config "Assign IRQ for USB" probably should be enabled. Depends on your machine, but mine was disabled by the ad-app.

Good luck and let me know if a "better" Kazaa crack shows up.

What is The Supertrick

There is a way to disable access to certain websites by editing the HOSTS file. Using this trick you can not only block ads and cookies, but also websites that might compromize your privacy and security. This trick also speeds up the loading time of websites.

How exactly does the HOSTS file work?

The short answer is that the HOSTS file is like an address book. When you type an address like www.yahoo.com into your browser, the HOSTS file is consulted to see if you have the IP address, or "telephone number," for that site. If you do, then your computer will "call it" and the site will open. If not, your computer will ask your ISP's (internet service provider) computer for the phone number before it can "call" that site. Most of the time, you do not have addresses in your "address book," because you have not put any there. Therefore, most of the time your computer asks for the IP address from your ISP to find sites.

If you put ad server names into your HOSTS file with your own computer's IP address (Localhost: 127.0.0.1), your computer will never be able to contact the ad server. It will try to, but it will be simply calling itself and get sort of a "busy signal". Your computer will then give up calling the ad server and no ads will be loaded, nor will any tracking take place. Your choices for blocking sites are not just limited to blocking ad servers. You may block sites that serve advertisements, sites that serve objectionable content, or any other site that you choose to block. Also would it be possible to redirect a website to another website by using that website's IP adress in stead of your computers IP adress.

This HOSTS file is located here:

Linux
/etc

Windows 95/98/Me
c:\windows\

Windows NT/2000/XP
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\
(you may need administrator access for Windows NT/2000)

NOTE: The HOSTS file does NOT have an extention (extensions are the .exe, .txt, .doc, etc. endings to filenames). HOSTS.sam is just an sample file, not the file you need to edit.
You can rename the file HOSTS.sam (a sample file) to HOSTS.

How to edit it:

CAUTION: Please make an backup copy before trying to edit the HOSTS file.

Windows users
You can open the HOSTS file by right-clicking on it and selecting "open with". Then select Notepad.

Add the following lines to the end of the HOSTS file:
127.0.0.1 www.brilliantdigital.com
127.0.0.1 desktop.kazaa.com
127.0.0.1 shop.kazaa.com
127.0.0.1 www.bonzi.com
127.0.0.1 www.b3d.com

Linux users
1. Open up a command window and make sure you're logged in as root.
2. Type cd /etc to go to the right directory.
3. Type cp hosts hostsbackup to make a backup.
You can restore the backup later on if something would have gone wrong.
To do that, you need to type mv hostsbackup hosts
4. Open up host with your favourite text editor, by typing editorname hosts (replace "editorname" by the name of your editor)
5. Copy the list of server names, along with 127.0.0.1 (localhost) into the hosts file. Don't change any of the other information you find there, just paste the list at the end of the file and save it. Quit the text editor.

Add the following lines to the end of the HOSTS file:
127.0.0.1 www.brilliantdigital.com
207.0.50.24 desktop.kazaa.com
127.0.0.1 shop.kazaa.com
127.0.0.1 www.bonzi.com
127.0.0.1 www.b3d.com

You can use this same method to block other websites. For a huge list of ad servers and other annoying websites, view the HOSTS List page.

Tip
Instead of 127.0.0.1 you can also use 0.0.0.0 as the IP to redirect to.
This speeds up your surfing a bit, but it does not work on all systems.

What other IP's should I block?

While no one can say for sure which ones you SHOULD block, you can find a giant list of IP's you might want to block on the HOSTS List page. Just a list of adservers, spyware sites, and other annoying and bad stuff.

How can I resume my old partial downloads?

All fasttrack clients (Kazaa Lite, Kazaa, Grokster, Morpheus) can complete each others .dat files. But there is one important note: If you start a download, the .dat file is created. It's important to notice, that the path to the current download folder is coded into the .dat file, together with the filename and location it will get after completion.
If you change the download folder or use a different setting after reinstallation you can still use the uncompleted .dat files. But after completion, the client tries to copy the final files to the original download folder. If this folder still exists, you may find the file there. If you have removed it, the .dat stays in your current download folder and cannot be copied. Do NOT rename it, because the download info is still attached to the end of the file. You can create the original folder, then the file will be copied to its final destiny. With
pseudotrack (included with KaZaA Lite) you can change the original download folder to your current download folder.

I have added those entries to the Hosts file, but I can see those sites/banners.

Make sure you have put the hosts file in the correct location and that you have used the correct filename 'hosts' (no extention !).

Else, if you use a proxy server, then it bypasses the Hosts file.
Do the following to let certain sites bypass the proxy and thus get blocked by the Hosts file:

Go to Internet Options. Click on the Connections tab. Select you connection and press on the settings button. Click on the Advanced button for the proxy settings. Now in the Exceptions field put the following (example):

desktop.kazaa.com;www.bonzi.com;www.brilliantdigital.com

There you can download the VB6 runtimes which include the files you need.

What is a Supernode?

Supernodes are an essential part of the network. When being a Supernode, other KaZaA (lite) users in your neighbourhood will automatically upload to your machine a small list of files they are sharing, whenever possible using the same Internet Service Provider or located in the same region as you. When they search they send the search request to you as a Supernode. This request will also be forwarded to other supernodes. The results are then send back to the user. The actual download will be directly from the computer who is sharing the file, not from you. The download goes from them to the person who wants it, peer-to-peer. Any computer using KaZaA (Lite) can become a Supernode if they have a modern computer and are accessing the Internet with a broadband connection. Being a Supernode does not affect your performance noticeably.

Is it harmfull for my computer to be a Supernode?

No. Being a Supernode helps other users. Other computers connect to you, and your computer does the searching for them. Your Supernode communicates with other Supernodes worldwide to help other members search the network. The amount of CPU resources that can be used by a Supernode is limited to 10% of the total CPU power available - you will in general not even notice if your computer is functioning as a Supernode!

Why are my downloads so slow?

The download speed depends on the user(s) you are downloading from: your downloads cannot be faster than their upload bandwidth allows. Try right-clicking the file you're downloading and select "Find More Sources for Download", this will make KaZaA Lite look for additional sources and may increase the download speed.

How come my download was disrupted?

When you are downloading a file, you are downloading directly from another computer that can be anywhere in the world. If this computer disconnects from the Internet while you are downloading, your download will be disrupted. KaZaA Lite uses intelligent downloads to periodically try and continue downloading your file from other KaZaA (Lite) users, so just leave KaZaA Lite to run until it finds it again. You can also try right-clicking the file and choose "Find More Sources for Download", this will make KaZaA LIte look for additional sources and may increase the download speed.

Why do so many uploads from my machine end up aborted?

Don't worry; this is due to uploads being taken from multiple sources. The user uploading from you probably finished the download using an alternative source.

What does the More Sources needed message mean?

It means that all the users sharing the file you want went offline while you were downloading. KaZaA Lite uses intelligent downloads to periodically try and continue downloading your file, so just leave KaZaA Lite to run until it finds it again.

Why can't I preview a media file?

There are two main reasons for this:
- Some media files cannot be previewed because of their nature.
- You may be downloading a file from many sources at once, so watching or playing the file while it downloads isn't possible.

There's no sound when I play a video file.

You don't have the Codec you need to play that type of video. There is a codec for each different system of encoding sound or video files.
Some widely used codecs can be found here:
DivX (http://www.divx.com/)
Nimo Codec Pack (http://users.chartertn.net/bpearson/)
Quicktime (http://www.quicktime.com/)

Ad-aware - False Postives with RefList
There are at least two false positives on the new ref list:

1) Norton CleanSweep's cscore.dll is being identified as a CometCursor file.
2) sporder.dll -- used by Sygate PF and AdCruncher Proxy -- is being identified as a WebHancer file.
