"---I repeat, the storm has---"

Gavin shut off the radio. He sat with his hands folded on his lap, sighed, and took the batteries out of the small radio.

"Why did you do that?" His wife asked. "I was listening."

"Why Shiela, why are we sitting in here listening to the damn radio?" He got up and went to the door of the bomb shelter in their back yard. It came with the house. Gavin thought it was kinda nifty when they bought the house, but now he dreaded it. Every time there were reports of real bad weather, Shiela insisted they hide in it until the storm passed. He went along because when she was happy, he was happy, but he wasn't happy anymore. "I'm going inside. I'm tired of waiting for nothing."

"You can't!" She yelled. "Didn't you hear them? They said something bad is heading this way. A torna--" "There's nothing. There was nothing last time we came out here and we aren't going to find out what happens next time because I'm not coming out here again unless I see something bad. If you want to come out here in this smelly thing, you do it by yourself."

He opened the door and---

--- She held her breath ---

Nothing happened. It was a little windy and raining hard, but there was nothing dangerous. He threw the batteries and shut the door.

"See?" he said. "Nothing. Now are you coming in with me or not?"

She nodded her head and stood up. When he opened the door, he was sucked out. She shut her eyes and grabbed the first thing that held her and waited until she felt safe enough to pry her fingers loose. She looked for Gavin but she didn't find him for a very long time.
