Nobody was on the beach. It was just mother and son playing in the water. He had a little raft boat. He kept begging mommy to take him deeper and deeper into the water and she did. She made boat noises and kicked with her feet. The little boy was clapping and laughing.

It was just another day at the beach until the fins cut the water. She pushed him out too far now and now they were stranded in the deep water, open to whatever was swimming around them in the water.

The mother was frightened, but she didn't scream. She stayed calm and turned the little float around. When her son asked her what the things were in the water, she told him it was nothing.

After months of begging, Kathy finally talked her fianc to come with her to the beach. It was her favorite place in the world and she wanted her favorite person to share it with her. She practically lived for the time she spent here. And though she would never tell him, she wasn't sure if she could marry someone who wouldn't at least come with her from time to time. Was the occasional day at the beach really too much to ask?

They played Frisbee and built a sandcastle together. They tanned and read together. They were having a really good time until she tried to get in the water. He begged and begged her not to. She came in and sat next to him on the towel.

He was almost near tears. "Please stay out of the water."

"Why?" She asked.

"Did I ever tell you how my mom died?"

"I thought it was---"

"I lied," he said. "See---"

The things in the water circled closer and closer. The mother still stayed very calm. All she wanted to do was scream, save her son, save herself, but she knew what would happen if she lost her cool. She slowly moved her legs through the water. It was the only thing she could think to do. There was a sand bar so close, if she could only reach it she could stand up. The water there was too shallow for whatever was in the water to follow.

She was crying now. She kept her head down so her son couldn't see her face. She didn't want him to worry anymore than he was. She had to be strong.

"What are we doing tonight kiddo?" She asked.

"We're goin' to the go-kart track!" He shouted and splashed the water.

That was it. He was too loud and now the things in the water came closer and closer. If they were sharks, she knew she was already dead. She started swimming faster but she wasn't fast enough, not nearly. They were so close.

"What happened next?" Kathy asked. She was holding her fianc's hand, watching his face, she was about to cry too. She could feel the tears welling up.

"The little boy was me...and the woman, my mom---"

He looked away from her for a moment, off into the distance. Kathy wanted to tell him it was all right, she wanted to hold him and kiss him, but she was stunned. She couldn't move. It was all she could do to just hold his hand. Had he really lived through something so terrible, and if so, she brought him here. To a place that hurt him so much. She felt ashamed.

"The things in the water were just dolphins. My mom did die of cancer many many years later." He smiled.

"YOU JERK!" She screamed and punched him on the arm as hard as she could. He got her again. "I can't believe you. You--"

He kissed her on the lips hard.

"But you love me anyway." He said and ran off into the water. She chased after him. They were alone on the beach now and neither of them noticed what was in the distance.
