It was getting late, but Kyle wanted just 5 more minutes in the playground. He begged and gave her the pitiful look until she granted him more time.
"But this is the last time." She said. "And I mean it, you only wanted 5 more minutes 20 minutes ago. It's time to go." "Thank you mommy!" Kyle said, hugging her. He padded away from her as fast as his feet would carry him. She watched him go through each stage of the playground. He stopped at every window to blow her a kiss. She caught them and held them to her heart. "Watch this mommy!" he shouted. He jumped into the colored balls butt first. She smiled and clapped for him. 30 seconds passed and he hadn't surfaced. There was no movement. "C'mon Kyle." She said. "It's time to go. I mean it. They are going to close soon." She waited more but he didn't come up. The balls didn't move. She couldn't hear or see him. "This isn't funny son." Two minutes had come and gone now but it felt more like 10. She knew he was playing a trick and he would be punished later but she couldn't help but worry. Maybe he wasn't playing games. He could really be hurt. He would be laughing by now if he was playing a game, wouldn't he? This wasn't the first time he pretended to be hurt, but he always gave himself away by laughing. There were sick people in the world these days. The type of people who leave infected needles, broken glass, and other dangerous items around. People who had a sick sense of humor and others who thought if they had to suffer others should also. "Damnit Kyle, come out now!" She shouted. The play area was empty but there were still a few people in the restaurant. They were watching her now. She tried to smile and wave, but her lips wouldn't cooperate. She turned to the playground. He could be dead right now, she thought. "Fine." She said. "If you won't come out, I'm leaving you here." She walked to the door of the play area and peeked over her shoulder. There was still no movement. Dead She was scared. She wasn't going to wait anymore. She was going to go in there and get him. If he was in there, alive, she was going to blister his ass in front of everyone. He wouldn't sit for days. If he's alive. "If you're in here I'm gonna whip your ass!" She climbed into the balls. She felt around for him. She threw the balls out of the way but they bounced back. She couldn't find him. She started sobbing and thrashing around in the balls calling his name. The other customers watched from their tables. A manager was asking her to get out, but she was ignoring him. She couldn't find her son. Then she stopped. She didn't move and she didn't blink. She was completely still. The manager watched. He threatened to call the cops but that was an empty threat. What would he tell them? "Yes, operator? I know there are people out there in need of serious help. There are a lot of bad things out there, but could you spare a few of your finest to get this woman out of my play area?" He wouldn't call the cops. Not yet anyway. Maybe she would just leave and trouble could be averted. Customer Escorted Out By Cops was not a headline he wanted associated with his restaurant. Something sharp stabbed her leg. She slowly and gently reached down and pulled it out of her leg. It was a needle. There was a note attached. It said: Enjoy the disease. "Mommy?" Kyle said. Dead. She closed her eyes. He was okay even if she wasn't. He was okay. "Promise not to hurt me if I come down?" He was watching her from one of the little windows. He must have snuck up there when she wasn't looking and now he was too scared to come down. "Yes baby," she said. "I promise." He came down cautiously. He didn't want to approach her at first, too scared, but he came to her when she spread her arms to hug him. "I'm sorry mommy." He said and snuggled against her. "Ouch!" he cried. "What's wrong baby?" "That hurt," he said. "Something stung me in the back." She brushed the hair out of his eyes and kissed his forehead. "It's okay baby." "But it hurt mommy, bad." "Miss?" the manager said. "Can you please leave?" She crawled out of the balls, Kyle followed. She straightened her clothes and picked up her purse. Kyle put on his shoes. "I'm sorry sir," she said. "I don't know what came over me." She left the needle there, in the playground. Someone else could find it. After all, why should she have to be the only one? Now she was going home to her husband, she had a present for him. "My back hurts mommy." Kyle said. She smiled at him. "So does my leg baby." |
