"Not afraid," Percy said. "Not afraid, not afraid, not afraid."

He was hiding under the covers again. Ever since his big brother told him about the thing in the closet, he was having a very hard time falling asleep under the covers. Every night, it would make noise and he ran off to his parents room. His brother said he was nothing but a sissy.

"Not afraid."

The same thing happened every time. He ran off, brought his parents back, and the thing was gone. There wasn't a trace. No scratch marks, no slime, nothing. It was like it was all in his head but he knew better. Why would he imagine something banging around in his closet?

"I'm not afraid of you," he whispered to the closet through the sheets.

But it was a lie. He was afraid. He was very afraid. Something in there was toying with him, just like in the movies, waiting to get him when he didn't expect it. It was making him afraid and enjoying it. He wanted to kill it. He wanted to be strong and courageous like the people in his comics but he didn't have any of it. His brother was right. He was a sissy.

"No I'm not," he whispered.

And then came the tears. They always came right before Percy ran off. He couldn't stop them. They just came and came until he cried himself out. He wanted to run but his parents told him he absolutely could not come in there toinght. If he did, therw ould be Very Big Trouble. It was almost worth it. Percy stood his ground longer than usual. But he peeked out of the covers at the wrong time and saw The Hand snaking out of the closet and he ran.

He stopped at the door to his parent's room. He didn't want big trouble. He didn't like being in trouble. He would face his fears. Percy grabbed the biggest knife he could find from the kitchen and tip toed back to his room.

Percy sat in front of the closet door and waited for it to come out again. He had a big surprise for it. Whatever was in there thought it could just come out and take him away but Percy would teach him different. He wouldn't be scaring anyone anymore.

Percy waited and waited for the thing to come out of the closet. He almost fell asleep. His eyelids were getting heavy and he was drifting away when the door flung open and out jumped the monster. It lunged at him and he screamed.

Percy grabbed the knife and almost cut the thing but he noticed something at the last second that made him stop. It wasn't a closet monster. It was just his brother wearing a dumb old halloween mask he always wore to scare Percy with some wearwolf gloves.

"Not afraid!" Percy growled.

His brother started laughing. Percy was so mad. He was more embarrassed than mad though because he wet himself and his brother could see it. Percy didn't want to be afraid anymore, he lunged at his brother and stabbed him in the chest. It all happened so fast, his parents didn't see what really happened. He told them it was an accident and they all believed him. Percy was never afraid again.
