Different types of Networks

As I have already explained, there are different types of networks all of which are categorized according to their geographical span. The the two major types of networks are Local Area Networks and Wide Area Networks. These are usually referred to as LAN and WAN.

Local Area Network (LAN)

A LAN can range from a simple network consisting of two computers connected by a cable to a complex network made up of hundreds of connected computers and peripherals throughout a major corporation. The distinguishing feature of a LAN is that it is confined to a limited geographic area.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

A wide area network (WAN), on the other hand, has no geographical limit. It can connect computers and other devices on opposite sides of the world. A WAN is made up of a number of interconnected LANs. Perhaps the ultimate WAN is the Internet.
