First, lets start by defining what is the most basic network. The simplest network consists of two personal computers connected to each other. Thus being able to share information (or data) and also share hardware and software. Surely, you all know that a computer network can consists of more than 2 computers connected together. Some networks consist of hundreds of computers and they are spread over a wide geographical area. Considering this factor, we can refine the above definition and define a computer network as below.
A network in data communication is the linkage of all computers, terminals, workstations and peripheral devices together in one building, in a large area, nation-wide or worldwide. Computers connected over a network are able to share resources (such as printers and CD-ROMs), exchange files, and allow electronic communications. The computers on a network may be linked through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams. All the above is possible due to the recent advances in communication technology, which made possible the transmission of data in digital form.
Presently, although it is very common for a household to have more than one computer still some people ask why a network is needed when today’s stand alone computers are so powerful. The answer is simply that networks increase efficiency and reduce costs.
Advantages of a Home Network:
> Sharing of documents
> Sharing of hardware such as printers and scanners
> Having Internet access on all computers, while still paying for one connection.
> More hard disk space available at a click of a button. |
