Just What is
The scheme was introduced to the Early Years and Child Care Partnership before the Summer Holiday Season 1999.  It was suggested that a 'pilot' program be carried out to see if this scheme would work.

The
Play for Awards scheme involves children aged 5 - 13, the age where the participant can progress to the Duke of Edunburgh (DofE) Award Scheme.  It's aim is to enable the participant develop everyday skills through activities that they would normally take part it.  The intention of the Play for Awards scheme is to channel this energy into a scheme that will be rewarding.

Play for Awards involves: physical, skill, service and expedition, all at a level that is achievable by each and every participant.

Furthering this,
Play for Awards aims to assist each individual participant, regardless of their ability or disability, to attain a new sence of adventure and achievement for their regular efforts and contributions to their play setting and community.

A leaflet giving an outline of the
Play for Awards scheme will shortly be available on this website, but is available by post, please e-mail if you require it urgently.  This gives the guidelines for the amount of hours at each level and age of the participant.
Ages 5 up to 7 ......................................... 2 hours in each section
Ages 8 up to 9 ......................................... 3 hours in each section
Age 10 .................................................... 4 hours in each section
Ages 11 and over ..................................... 5 hours in each section
Each and every participant is given a record of achievement, and it is hoped that adults will volunteer co-operation and honesty, to assist all young participants achieve their goals.  The award book and 'insert' for parents, guardians etc, will be available on this site shortly, again, if you want it urgently, please e-mail.
Play for Awards was developed at two after school clubs in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, by the staff and the children.

The reason why this scheme was set up was, it realsed that there were award schemes for of the age groups above the limit that
Play for Awards intended to cover.  As Play for Awards was intended for use in after school provisions, the ages of children, 5 - 11, must be catered for.  Realising the 'gap in the market' for such a scheme, it was decided that, with the right help, motivation, resources ... such a scheme would work well within the Borough.
