Planet X returned to Cafe Paris today (Gig#14). Like before we were playing with both Proon and Utopia's Fall, only this time we were the first band up. Again , like our last few shows this one went great, but also again -- not many people saw it. We used our own P.A. this time, and everything went smoothly. I kinda looked on the situation as a challenge - the more we get ignored the harder we play - we had fun with it - Ron and I were going out during the songs to the patio and back into the pool room, where some people were hanging out, and saying "Hi, how's it going?" A group of kids that Ron had invited from American River College showed up -- but couldn't get in because they were under 21. (Note: Our next scheduled show at Capital Garage will be All Ages)
I can understand people not showing up to our gig the previous night, it was a weeknight (Thursday) and we played quite late (started at 11:30 pm), but this show was on a weekend (Friday) and we started at 9:30. We really didn't expect anyone to show up to The Distillery (and they didn't) but we did expect a few people at Cafe Paris. Like most bands starting out, we're faced with the Catch-22 of getting people to see us - who won't come out because they haven't seen us...
I have to say that we've received a better response and more support in Las Vegas, Concord and in San Francisco than we have in our own hometown of Sacramento so far. I don't know why that is...maybe just coincidence. Maybe it's the fact we've played so many shows so close together. Maybe not. I've submitted our band and our shows to Digimag, the local newspaper's (Sacramento Bee) online music section at least 3 or 4 times over the past weeks, but none of our shows were included in the list, and neither is our band. I mean, the Open Mike at The Distillery on Sept 8th is listed, but not our show at the same location, the very next day, September 9th. (I even performed at that Open Mike too - and made sure everyone there knew I'd be back with my full band - and yes, I am going to make them feel guilty when I go back next week). We also found out today that we were not going to be included in the next Sacramento Rocks compilation CD from radio station 98 Rock. They said they were going to include a link to our band on their website, so far - that hasn't happened. Maybe they will later, I don't know -- all we can do is keeping asking and waiting.
I had a really great poster made up for these shows (pictured at left), but the copy place jerked us around for nearly a week and they weren't ready until the day of the show -- which was useless. Ah well...I'm sure we'll laugh about this stuff later.
On the other hand when I submit a website link or our show schedule to another local radio stations website, KWOD they show up immediately and unedited. Go figure.
I know some people might not like me to point this stuff out-- but fact is...it's all true, and the truth will set you free if you surrender yourself to it. If people are nice ...I'll gladly write that up too.
We're basically nice people, but I can definately see where peoples "Rock Star" attitude comes from when they've been repeated pissed on by apathy ... until they eventually start to gain recognition and noteriety. I personally think people burn their bridges with a bad attitude...but I do understand that attitude a little better now.
We're sounding better and better every show, eventually people are going to notice it...eventually. This stuff won't bring us down - but we'll try to remember it - because even if we do get really huge, we could still come right back down to this again.
