Today was the very first show by Planet X at the Press Club (Gig #20), one of the more prestigious Downtown night spots for up and coming bands. We were playing on a Thursday (audition) night and there were a lot of surprises awaiting us. For example I went down to the Press, and noticed that the Marque only listed "Planet X". So this made me think that we were the only band that was playing. I talked to the sound guy and he said - "Show up at 8:30". All right, I passed this on to everybody eles.

Well, on the day of the gig, I looked in our local weekly news zine, Sacramento News & Review... and Planet X was listed as the headliner, which meant that we were going to be the last out of three bands. Jay, the booker had seen our first show at Capitol Garage last month and I guess he liked us enough to give us the "sweat" spot. Problem is...it's rarely that sweat at 12:30 on the Thursday night.

Thursday or not...it was a really good crowd. And the first two bands, Area 53 and Sindacate, had people really whooping and hollering. Still, it was pretty late by the time our turn came around and even people who I knew had come to see us could stick around which was a real shame because this was probably one of best shows to date.

First of all, we've been playing a lot of B.Y.O.P.A. (Bring your own Power Amp and Speakers) shows. So we've been essentially without stage monitors to let us really hear what's going on for some time. We didn't even have monitors at our last Boardwalk show. The Press Club has a nice P.A. and good monitors. So for us... it was actually pretty strange to really hear for once.

Plus Darryl had traded one of his guitars for a new Sovtek Amp to replace his modified Marshall, and this was the very first time where any of the rest of us would get to hear it and judge how it sounded.

    The Verdict?

It was all good, baby. The Sovtek cut through very nicely and people could finally tell what Darryl's been playing all this time. The crowd loved it. We'll be back to the Press.

    Count on it.
