News & Review Advertisement for 01/20/00 Show at Bigshots - click to enlarge Our first show at Old Ironsides, one of the more popular downtown venues. I missed the first band playing - Vyhb, but I did catch the second group - Iron Angel. They brought in quite a crowd and appeared to have been playing around for a little while, although they might not be from Sacramento. Their guitarist had a strong Eddie Van Halen influence, especially in his use of guitar effects, but he wasn't limited to that - he also used a talk box. Their lead singer was a girl with a pretty strong voice. It was almost like what Van Halen might have sounded like if Parry Smythe had joined them. Nice group. I gave them our card. :)

Old Ironsides has a nice sound system, but a postage stamp for a stage. We all fit on it...but it wasn't like we could jump around much. Their sound guy Jay did a good job, even it we did nearly give him a heart-attack when we said we wanted two mikes for the guitar (one for rythm and one for lead), although we only have one guitarist. This is a setup Darryl's been using for some time and actually allows the soundguy more control to add reverb and set the volume of the lead independant of the rythm volume and tone. We've played the Boardwalk six times now and the soundguy there is still freaks a little when we bring it up. It's a minor hassle, but it sounds good.

For one of the few gigs we've done lately where they're was a house P.A., this one really sounded nice. We had an excellent live mix. You could even hear the keyboard parts for once. We video taped the show, as we have with many of our shows for later review. All the guys from Iron Angel hung out and caught the first half of our show and that was cool, but we didn't play that long a set. We closed out the show having played just a single song in dropped-C tuning (which most of our newer songs are in...) "Not Like U". We also played the newest song "Harden"

Once we were done, Jay came over and gave us our next Press Club show date (in addition for doing sound at Old-I, Jay books acts into the Press) - so I guess we must have done "OK", in his book. Now let's hope we can get some weekend shows in some of these clubs. :) We've done our downtown penance I think.

    Onward and upward.
