Friday night and Planet X returns once again to Cafe Paris as headliners. Opening this show was Burner and Proon. Burner, lead by lead guitarist/vocalist Bolo, used to be known as T.F.N., we'd played a show with them some time back at The Boardwalk. This was our first chance to really hear them though - not bad. Nice guitar work.
I didn't get a chance to see Proon as I had to run home and get some paperwork for the rest of the band to sign, but I had seen them the previous night at the Hogshead Pub in Old Town Sacramento. They just keep getting better and better, although their bassist was sick with the flu - they played great. My pal Sam Hines formerly of HollowStone
and now a member of "One Pump Chump" -- (Formerly known as "Accident Prone" -- don't ask) was there. Also, I heard that Chris Burgess (webmaster for 98 Rock) was there while I was gone and was asking for me... oh well, I'll catch him on the web I guess. I haven't seen Chris since the first time I saw Proon play at Cafe Paris - Hollowstone was on that bill also.
From what I've heard, another friend of mine - Clif Mays - may have now joined Hollowstone replacing Sam. I'll have to check in on this one later, Clif is one Kool Kat.
OH yeah, Planet X played this night also. This was our first time back since the infamous "Pus Bucket" incident. Thankfully, there was no repeat of those events - especially since we were the band in the suicide slot. Most of Proon hung out for most of the set, even though they didnt have to. (A couple of them did since we were using their speakers...but we've done the same for them in the past).
The show went well except for one minor incident with a bad cable. In the middle of "Bridges" is a keyboard/vocal section, during which Darryl and I switch places and he plays the keys while I stand in his spot by his amp. Well...Cafe Paris is pretty small, so we really didn't have enough room to neatly arrange all of our cables. They were constantly underfoot - I almost slipped on them several times. Anyway, where Darryl finished his keyboard part and went back to begin his guitar solo-- his guitar wouldn't play. But all wasn't lost...Ron and Mitch just went into a jam/breakdown while Darryl and Rob (roadie) figured out the source of the problem which took about 90 seconds. As soon as Darryl had his guitar back... a simple nod of the head was all it took bring us right back into the start of his solo.
It was pretty cool even if it did make a 6 and half minutes song last for almost 9 minutes. LOL. It sounded so nice though, it was almost like we planned it that way....shhhh don't tell anybody it was all ad lib, okay?
