k.d. lang: Invincible Summer

(2000)

The Sounds of Summer

Pros: It's k.d. lang, with a retro-California state of mind. Nicely-done!

Cons: Doesn't quite measure up to "Ingnue..."

Full Review

Ahhh, summer. It's a time to go on vacations or to take a swim in the pool or lake. It can also be the time where love can bloom between two people. This is what "Invincible Summer" by k.d. lang is all about. All the songs on here have a sun-drenched, carefree feeling to them. It's almost like a weekend spent on the beach somewhere with the one you love. I must add that most of the songs of the CD sound as though they came straight out of the '60s or '70s. This is a good thing, in my opinion. I think the summer season is the perfect time to listen to this CD. Here, for your reading enjoyment, are my opinions on each of the tracks.

1. "The Consequences Of Falling"
From the compelling bassline at the beginning of this track onward, this is a very nice, lush-sounding song. As usual, k.d. lends her beautiful voice to the vocals, and everything comes together in a mellow experience that sounds like it came straight out of the '70s. Great way to kick things off here.

2. "Summerfling"
We're going even further back in time for this one. It sounds as if the music was written in 1963, and the lyrics hearken back to that era with lines like "We ran on the beach with Kennedy flair." The title here truly describes the feelings felt during a summer fling: Excitement, anticipation, and longing for someone to spend carefree days with. Let the summer infatuations begin!

3. "Suddenly"
This is another song with its heart in the past. The token ingredient here is the horn line, which sounds like something Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass would crank out. Other than that, the song nicely encapsulates the feelings felt upon first meeting that special someone.

4. "It's Happening With You"
This is a fun song, no two ways about it. From the rockin' beat to the sing-along lyrics, this one has it all. Included herein is a short excursion into disco territory, a pick-up line in the making ("In this crazy world full of lemons/Baby, you're lemonade!"), and even some music from the Old Country. If this looks like an interesting combination on your screen, it sounds even better. Great track!

5. "Extraordinary Thing"
This track is more "modern" in approach, but k.d. still manages to put her unique spin on things. As with the songs before this one, the main theme here is that of discovering a new love, a new chance to give into the heart's need to love someone special. There is a degree of uncertainty here, but such is life.

6. "Love's Great Ocean"
To say that this song sounds like something from "Ingnue" would be a little bit of a stretch, but it's not that far off. True to the title, this song has a feel like the listener is lounging on the beach somewhere. It's a mellow tune for sure, one that equates the feeling of being loved with the feel of floating in the ocean. A nice track.

7. "Simple"
The title of this one says it all. This song is sparsely-arranged, with some light drumwork, acoustic guitar, and piano pretty much the only accompaniment to k.d.'s voice. What this adds up to is a soft, sweet commentary on how deceptively simple love can be at times. This is a beautiful song.

8. "What Better Said"
This is another "modern-sounding" song. That having been said, it's also one of the better songs on the CD, in my opinion. This one's more about yearning for acceptance from the object of one's desire than anything else. Again, it almost reminds me of what can be found on "Ingnue," but it's just unique enough to where it doesn't quite "belong" on Ingnue.

9. "When We Collide"
This song brings back the '70s vibe found in the earlier tracks on this album in a big way. It almost sounds like something that The Carpenters would put out. I can imagine Karen Carpenter putting her own smooth spin on the lyrics, and the bridge really has that Carpenters sound, with the big, overdubbed vocals. This might just be my favorite song on this CD, it's that good.

10. "Curiosity"
This one reminds me of "World Of Love" from "All You Can Eat" (review coming soon). However, it's not as, shall we say "suggestive" as "World Of Love" is. Actually, I like the way this song sounds, kind of like "Dreamboat Annie" by Heart. It's another mellow song, one that's easy to listen to. And personally, I love the funky little guitar riff at the end, compliments of Wendy Melvoin of Prince and the Revolution fame.

11. "Only Love"
This one closes the CD out in smooth, gentle style. The lyrics penned by k.d. are simple, but there is a lot of truth in her words. In addition, the music has a soothing and reassuring quality to it. It's as if k.d. is telling the world that she has learned "of love's sacrifice," and is at peace with herself. A great way to finish things off here.

And so, eleven tracks and a little over 40 minutes later, you have what I consider an all-around good CD. It doesn't have the same appeal as "Ingnue" does, but that's not surprising, seeing how "Ingnue" is almost perfect in my opinion. Instead, "Invincible Summer" has an appeal all it's own. It's a whole lot of retro sounds with a little bit of modern stuff thrown in for good measure. Above all, this is an album celebrating the joys of summer and being in love. To that, I say "See you on the beach!"

The Bottom Line:

This is one CD to listen to during the summer months, no two words about it.
