Get ready to rock! You've just entered into the section where I pay homage to the band responsible for turning me on to classic rock: Iron Butterfly! Here's where you'll find the story of how I became a Butterfly Fan, as well as a basic list of the albums that this group came out with. If you are a fellow fan of Iron Butterfly, I salute you. If you've never heard about the Butterfly, but like good, heavy music, I strongly suggest that you go out and find the CDs mentioned below. They might be a little hard to find, and you might have to special order a few, but believe me, it's worth it! Well, enjoy the voyage!

I first heard the single version of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" back when I was a 7th grader in Durango, Colorado. Then, on an 8th grade camping trip to Mesa Verde National Park, I asked a friend of mine what he was listening to on his Walkman. When he told me he was listening to "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," I was immediately interested. He told me how long the song was, which intrigued me. I'd always envisioned a killer guitar solo hidden somewhere in the version I'd heard, but this new revelation was enough to boggle my young mind!

Well, when my Freshman year in high school rolled around, I had pretty much forgotten about my 8th grade encounter. Then, one night at the local Wal-Mart, I saw the cassette labeled "Iron Butterfly: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," and I just HAD to buy it. So I did, and the rest, as they say, is history. I fell in love with the full-length version of "Vida" the first time I played it, and I've been a loyal Butterfly Fan ever since.

As time has gone by, I'm proud to say that I have acquired EVERY Iron Butterfly album that is still easily available. The information that follows covers the band members, the albums, and the music. Enjoy!

The Members of Iron Butterfly:

Doug Ingle - organ, piano, acoustic guitar, lead vocals
(Doug's the guy that founded Iron Butterfly and remained loyal until the band broke up in 1971.)

Daryl De Loach - percussion, tambourine, vocals
(He left after "Heavy," but was one of the first in the band.)

Danny Weis - lead guitar
(This guy was the man behind the screaming guitar licks on "Iron Butterfly Theme," from "Heavy.")

Jerry Penrod - bass guitar, vocals
(Jerry was the bassplayer on "Heavy.")

Ron Bushy - drums
(Another trooper of the band, whose solid, heavy rhythms made every song great!)

Erik Keith Braunn (also spelled "Brann") - lead guitar, vocals (born: 1950, died: 2003)
(This former child prodigy made his guitar scream on "Vida" and several songs on "Ball." Look for a tribute to Mr. Braunn coming soon.)

Lee Dorman - bass guitar, vocals
(Dorman's solid bass sound was the foundation of songs from "Vida" to the breakup of the band in '71.)

Mike Pinera - guitar, lead vocals
(A former member of Blues Image ("Ride Captain Ride"), Pinera was great on "Metamorphosis," IMHO.)

Larry "El Rhino" Reinhardt - guitar
(Teamed up with Pinera, El Rhino's guitar was excellent on "Metamorphosis!")

Additional Musicians:

Richard Podolor - sitar, twelve-string guitar

Bill Cooper - twelve-string guitar

The albums of Iron Butterfly

This is most of the material that the Butterfly came out with. I happen to have ALL of these on CD, and even a couple of the original LPs! Click on the album cover for the track listings, and an in-depth review of the album as a whole. You'll also be able to hear clips of selected songs, in RealAudio format. If you see an icon like this next to the title of a song, click the title to hear a 30-second clip of the song in question.

NOTE:

You must have RealPlayer installed on your computer to listen to song samples.
