Iron Butterfly: Live

(1970)

Live Butterfly!

Pros: There's a good "live" vibe put out here, almost like you're part of the audience.

Cons: Another case of the Vinyl Time Constraint, "Vida" sounds like it was butchered.

Full Review

Since I've already reviewed all the other albums that the Butterfly put out in their prime, I won't go into a long, track-by-track review here. If you want a good base to go on before reading this review, you might want to read my reviews for "Heavy", "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", and "Ball" first, as these are the albums the Butterfly had released up to the Live album.

I will say that this is a great live album. If you like the studio versions of some of their finest songs, there's a good chance you'll like this disc. The track list goes like this:

1. In The Time Of Our Lives
2. Filled With Fear
3. Soul Experience
(Nice rearrangement here, with an extended jam)
4. You Can't Win (Check the spoken intro to this one!)
5. Are You Happy
6. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
(This version clocks in at 19 minutes, but it may have edited/shortened somewhat. No matter, it still rocks. The chanting during the drum solo creates a nice vibe!)

If this were put out in the age of CDs, we might have gotten more of a live set, with maybe a couple more of the better tracks from "Heavy" (IE: Iron Butterfly Theme). But since this was released on vinyl first, we're stuck with a little over 35 minutes of total music. Oh well, I still think this is a good CD to listen to if you're an Iron Butterfly fan.

The Bottom Line:

If you're a Butterfly fan, you need to get this album to complete your collection just for the fact that it's live.
