Cons: "Pleasure Slave" isn't for everyone...
1. "Wheels of Fire"
If there is a better way to kick off a Manowar CD, I'm hard-pressed to find it. You'd better be strapped in, because Eric, Joey, Scott, and Ross are gonna give you the ride of your life! A hard-driving beat, sweet riffs, and of course Eric Adam's vocals combine to capture the very essence of speed, power, and adrenaline. Simply put, think of "Highway Star" by Deep Purple, and then add a supercharger and a bottle of nitrous.
2. "Kings of Metal"
Ahhh, the classic Manowar Anthem! Every CD of theirs has one, and this is one of the best, in my opinion. This song tells the listener, in no uncertain terms, what this band is all about. It's a great song to shout out the chorus parts to. "Other bands play, Manowar KILL!"
3. "Heart of Steel"
I had mixed emotions about this song at first, then I grew to really like it. It's one of their ballads, but it contains a message (about being yourself no matter what) that I agree with wholeheartedly. The piano in the beginning is a nice touch too. Excellent musicianship continues throughout the song.
4. "Sting of the Bumblebee"
I'm at a loss for words as to how to describe this track. I can only say that Joey DeMaio is probably the ultimate bass player. He never ceases to amaze me with his unreal speed and accuracy. Prepare to be blown away by his virtuosity on this track.
5. "The Crown and the Ring (Lament of the Kings)"
This has to be the most majestic Manowar song I have ever heard. No guitars here, just a choir, an orchestra, a pipe organ, and Eric Adam's voice. You have to hear this song for yourself. Definitely a classic.
6. "Kingdom Come"
This is another song with a positive message in it. I can always appreciate a song like this. As kind of a side note, this song vaguely reminds me of "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake, which is a good thing.
7. "Pleasure Slave"
I know I'm probably going to catch some flack from this review, but I don't think this song is that bad. Sure, the lyrics are a bit *ahem* sexist, but you have to remember that this IS Manowar, the manliest of bands. Aside from the lyrics, this song has a great riff and a tight sound throughout. Definitely worth listening to.
8. "Hail and Kill"
This song starts off kind of slow as a call to arms, but it soon charges head-on into the heat of battle. Then again, what else would you expect on a Manowar CD? Swords and armor, blood, and gore are all present here, and the band is definitely in their element. "Hail! Hail! Hail and kill!"
9. "The Warrior's Prayer"
No music on this track, just a grandfather telling a story of a great battle he witnessed between the Kings of Metal and the armies of the world. The story and vocals are good here though, so you shouldn't skip this one until you've heard it at least once. I myself think it works well.
10. "Blood of the Kings"
The final track on this CD is a tribute to the loyal brothers and sisters of True Metal who have followed Manowar through the years, as well as a promise that the band will be around for a long time to come. A great way to end this CD, this song truly rocks! And I love the ending, with the guitar riff fading away as if the Kings of Metal were riding off into the next epic battle.
