Plattsmouth Junior Youth Association (PJYA) offers flag and tackle football
programs for 6-14 year-olds in the community. PJYA is a non-profit organization
whose goal is to teach sound fundamental football skills while having a lot of fun.
The hope is to create an enthusiastic and deep base of young football players that
the community can build upon for future success at the junior and senior high levels.
To this end, PJYA has provided activities in the past for the parents and kids alike outside of
practice and games. These have included a tour of Nebraska University's
football facilities/stadium, attendance of Omaha Beef home games,
and tailgate cookouts held on Friday evenings before the high school's home
football games.
For tackle football, the PJYA football program competes in the Elkhorn Valley
Waterloo (EVW) Youth Football League along with other
youth teams from similarly-sized Class B/C communities such as Gretna, Auburn,
Springfield, etc. Flag teams compete in the Bellevue Junior Youth Association (BJSA)
Flag Football League. Over 100 boys participated in the PJYA program
last year (2006) allowing us to enter teams in the 6-8 flag program and the 8-10 and
11-12 tackle programs. Our 11-12 year olds won their division with a 7-1 record,
qualifying for the playoffs and finishing as one of the top 4 teams in the
league.
Effective this coming season (2007), the EVW is
re-structuring to ensure players of common age, size and experience to play
together. 3rd & 4th graders for the 2007/2008 school year will play in a Pee
Wee Division that focuses on player development and understanding of the game of
football.
Players in the 5th & 6th grades for the coming school year will play in the
Jr. Midget Division and 7th & 8th graders will be eligible to play in the
Midget Division. The re-structuring allows for 8th graders in the
2007/2008 school year to continue to be a part of the organization and get
continued opportunities to play football outside of the school program.
However, all our Middle School players continue to be encouraged by the PJYA
staff to play school football first and to consider PJYA for added game
experience if and only if their schoolwork allows.
All necessary practice and game equipment (except for cleats) are provided by the
PJYA program. Cost to participate in the program is $125 for tackle and $60 for
flag. These fees are almost entirely used to pay league registration fees
for each team (referees, etc.), and buy/maintain equipment for our
players. All PJYA coaches and board members are volunteers.
Practice begins for the tackle teams in mid-late July depending on the players'
age. Practice usually runs 3-4 nights a week (again depending on the
players' ages) until games begin and then backing off a night or two. Head
coaches will keep parents/players informed of their practice schedules.
Practice is held on the Middle School practice fields across from Dairy Queen
and usually run from 6-7:30 PM.
Our first game for tackle is usually the weekend prior to Labor Day. Flag
teams will begin the first Sunday after Labor Day (September 9th this
year) and all seasons will run until the end of October (into November if teams
make the playoffs). All teams normally have 1 scheduled game per
week (Saturday or Sunday afternoons for tackle and Sundays for flag), although weather and/or scheduling problems may cause
an occasional mid-week make-up game.
PJYA home games for its tackle teams are played at the Middle School football field. Admission is free and concessions are available. All flag games are played at Haworth Park in Bellevue. Feel free to stop by and cheer the home teams on any weekend in the fall (see our Schedule Page for a list of home games). In addition, keep an eye on the Plattsmouth Journal which covers the PJYA football program in its sports section all season long.
The PJYA staff and coaches are always looking forward to fun and exciting seasons. We hope you can join us. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the PJYA officers.
