| At this point, two men in gas masks and boiler suits bustle into the reception, carrying a stretcher and an empty body-bag. As the two men with the stretcher go into the surgery, the dentist, Mr Nance, emerges. He is wearing a blood soaked apron and wipes his hands on an equally reddened piece of cloth. MR NANCE Any trouble, Miss Hargreaves? MISS HARGREAVES This man has some ointment. MR LEWIS (correcting her) Appointment. MISS HARGREAVES Apparently he wants to be a ventriloquist. MR NANCE Well, the very best of luck to you sir, but I have work to do! MR LEWIS No, look, youre getting mixed up. I want a tooth taken out, its causing me immense pain! MR NANCE A youth? Oh, Miss Hargreaves, are those stray kids from up the estate loitering inside the lobby again? MISS HARGREAVES I think they left after you pulled that one kids fingers out their sockets with the pliers, doctor. MR NANCE Oh, yes. How silly of me to forget. MR LEWIS (impatiently) Well? MR NANCE (to Lewis) Are you still here? Whatever is the matter with you? MR LEWIS Its one of my back teeth Ive got a really bad ache! MR NANCE Well, Id take it back if I were you. Mr Nance walks through to the surgery. Mr Lewis goes to follow him, but is obstructed by the two men in gas masks and boiler suits coming back out the surgery carrying the stretcher with a corpse inside the body bag on top. Mr Lewis lets them pass, looking in horror at the body-bag on the stretcher, before following Mr Nance into the surgery. Mr Nance returns just as Mr Lewis is about to enter, and bustles him back into the reception. MR LEWIS Take what back? MR NANCE The rake. MR LEWIS Ra-what are you talking about? I dont have a rake! MR NANCE Well, you ought to get one. I hear the hardware store on Fillingham Street is having a sale MR LEWIS (almost crying in pain) Look please try to understand. My tooth is causing me huge amounts of pain, and I want you to take it out for me! Mr Nance recoils, as if in shock. MR NANCE (incredulously) Take it out for you? Here? In the surgery? With Miss Hargreaves watching? MR LEWIS Well, if shes your assistant, yes. Mr Nance remains shocked, and looks over at Miss Hargreaves, who shifts in her seat and shrugs. MR NANCE Yes, yes, well. Erm, OK Miss Hargreaves, ifif youd like to get ready, Ill He nods suggestively to Miss Hargreaves, who gets up from behind the desk. MISS HARGREAVES (sexily) Of course, doctor. She goes upstairs. MR NANCE (as if nothing has happened) Right, OK, Mr? MR LEWIS Lewis. MR NANCE Mr Lewis, if youd like to go on in and take a seat, Ill be with you in just one moment. Mr Lewis walks into the surgery. As he does so, Mr Nance takes off the blood soaked apron and tosses it behind the reception desk. He follows Lewis into the surgery, and finds the man standing looking at the empty space where the dentists chair should be. MR NANCE If youd like to take a seat |
