Hugh Stimson, our featured resident for March, wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and become a farmer. Instead, Hugh joined the US Army in 1941 and became a  paratrooper. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, at Munster and at Oberhausen. After Hugh's honorable discharge in 1945, he worked as a policeman, and then for General Motors. Hugh and his wife, Margaret, raised four children, and Hugh worked with the black community to help their youth get a good start in life.
The first potluck of the New Year took place on January 24 and was chaired by Rod and Barbara Cornforth. About forty hungry residents attended.
The Purple Pizazz Ladies of the Red Hat Society completed their lovely quilt on January 19. The quilt will be raffled in March, to raise money for cancer research at the University of Arizona.
Very early on January 29, the Pancake Breakfast committee braved a snowstorm to slide on down to the Clubhouse and heat up the griddle, etc. We're sure glad that they did. The turnout was good, as were the pancakes!
Two dozen Pine Lakes Hikers explored some interesting sites on February 3, including "The Quarry," where stone was obtained for building the Courthouse and Fort Whipple.
Herman, our resident Great Blue Heron, was seen finding fish in our two lakes all through the winter months. He (she?) is a year-round resident, for sure!
