Community Voices

By Barbara Del Roca

Hello again, Pine Oaks residents!  Jim was gracious enough to let me write another Community Voices column and report on last months wonderful Founders Day celebration.  Biased as I may be, I think I can honestly say that, a good time was had by all!

Except for the following people.  Apologies to:

- Anyone who got food poisoning from the dinner.  Ill never use that catering service again, although I dont see why it happened to so many people.  Once the first person vomited, why didnt the rest of you have the decency to stop eating?  I think everyone shares the blame in this one.
- Anyone offended by the Pine Oaks Seersucker Societys banner.  Ive spoken with their president, Mike Wilcox, and a new banner has been ordered.  Really, though, they should think about changing that slogan.
-Anyone harmed in the fire at Sundays concert.  Im not even sure how it started, considering it was raining and the ground was so wet.  Id say that Grooveasaurus Tex were on fire, but that would be in poor taste.  Luckily, the hospital was just a short 20-minute drive away, which leads me too

Thanks to those of you who were gracious enough to drive those burned to the hospital.  Im sure they appreciated it.

Thank you to David Wilkes, who gave such an inspirational speech before vomiting.  Im sure your uncle would have been proud, and I wish you a full and speedy recovery.  Were lucky to live in a country with such advanced medical technology that botulism isnt the problem it once was.

Thank you to everyone who attended Saturdays parade.  Unfortunately, due to the rain, we didnt have quite as many people as we would have liked.  But really, who could have predicted rain on the East Coast in August?  I say that all of those meteorologists just got lucky.  I was also disappointed in the businesses at Pine Oaks Commons, who didnt have the decency to close while we set up the parade.  As a result, we had all kinds of interference from patrons and other passersby, and the parade wasnt all it could have been.  If any of the parade participants would like an apology, Im sure the business proprietors would be happy to grant them.

I would also like to take this opportunity to announce my candidacy for the Board Chairpersonship in November.  It may seem early, but given my track record of success with this and previous Founders Day events, my co-chairwoman ship of the Pine Oaks Book Club, and my stewardship of the Caring Wishes Foundation, that youll make me your new president, and I would be honored to have your vote come November 7.  Its the most important election youll decide that day.

My eternal thanks,

Barbara Del Roca
