JULY 2006
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings, Pine Oaks residents!  You hold in your hands the very first issue of the Pine Oaks Community Newsletter, a venture which has been in the works for several months.  Back in March, some Neighborhood Board members expressed interest in creating a way to keep members of the Pine Oaks community informed about whats going on in our little hamlet-let.  The newsletter is the result of the hard work of our fellow residents Marissa Landeth who has spent many hours putting it together, and Fred Muldoon, our fearless webmaster.  So who am I?  For any new residents or shut-ins, Im Jim Stillman, owner of Stillmans Hardware and Neighborhood Board President.  Ive asked for the opportunity to use this space to address the Pine Oaks residents and discuss any points of interest in the community.  And as any resident of Pine Oaks knows, there are plenty!  Every month, youll find community news, minutes from the latest Board meeting, a schedule of upcoming events in the neighborhood, notes from the Pine Oaks Book Club, some Neighborhood Watch safety tips, a guest column from one of your neighbors, and a section called From the Young Persons Perspective.

On that note, let me take this opportunity to discuss a little bit of neighborhood business.  As you will read below, the Pine Oaks community pool has closed due to a recent incident.  While students from the local high school (go Fighting Van Burens!) are suspected, we do not know who it was, and will likely never know.  So I would just like to remind our residents that the pool is not the place for intercourse, and request that any relations, marital or otherwise, occur in the privacy of your homes.

Im also excited because this month we have our annual Pine Oaks July 4 picnic.  Weve decided to go potluck this year, and theres more information about what to bring elsewhere in the newsletter.  So enjoy the Community Newsletter!  As we like to say, living in Pine Oaks just got a little bit better!

Jim Stillman
Pine Oaks Neighborhood Board President
WELCOME WAGON

Hello!  My name is Andrea Stillman.  My husband Jim has asked me to write a column for the new Pine Oaks community newsletter, so I thought what better to write about that welcoming our new residents?  Ive served as the unofficial leader of the Pine Oaks Welcome Wagon for almost three years, and in that time Ive gotten to know just about everyone in the community.  Every month Ill use this space to welcome folks who have moved into the neighborhood in the past month, so that all of their new neighbors can take the time to welcome them, too.  So please join me in saying hello to the following new Pine Oaksers:

- Tom and Nancy Yan: 3804 Norwell St.
Tom and Nancy recently moved to Pine Oaks from New York City.  Nancy has taken a job with the Commerce Department, working for the Assistant Secretary for International Trade.  Her husband Tom will be working in the Legislative Affairs department of the Coalition for Americas Tomorrow.  Their daughter Sarah will attend Jefferson Davis Middle School in the fall.

- June Addison: 3118 Briarlake Rd.
June will be serving as Rt. 237 High Schools choir teacher beginning in the new school year.  Prior to taking that position, she taught high school choir and musical theater in Colorado Springs for seven years.

- Derek Fitzhugh-Fitzsimmons: 2009 Dolphy St.
Derek moved to the neighborhood at the end of May to work as a contractor with the Loterus Group.  While Derek wouldnt tell me the specific nature of his work, Im sure it will be exciting.  Derek moved to Pine Oaks from Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
