| Neighborhood Watch Safety Tip
by Tony Daniels Hello friends! You folks may know me as the friendly fellow walking around the neighborhood every evening. And, as Ive explained to each of you who have called into our headquarters to complain, Im the head of our Neighborhood Watch group. Im very excited about the opportunities this newsletter will provide to inform the residents of Pine Oaks about things to watch out for, and to impart some safety tips to you all. This month, I want to discuss evening exercise. The summer months are popular for people to go jogging or ride their bikes outside after work. And Pine Oaks newly constructed bike path is perfect for either of those options. However, while the days are getting longer, there is a temptation to stay out later. While exercise is always encouraged, this can mean that joggers and bikers are hard to see in the dark. So, I must ask that if you do, in fact, bike or jog along the path at night, please bring a flashlight. Unfortunately, while the bicycle path was completed several weeks before the projected date, the lighting has not yet been installed, and so we are asking residents who use the path to bring along their own flashlights, so that they can be safe for the three weeks before the path lighting is installed. Bicycle riders should purchase a flashlight that can be operated while keeping hands free to operate the conveyance. Some flashlights are available that can wrap around the users neck, leg or wrist. Another available option is to purchase a frontally-attaching basket for the conveyance and place a standard flashlight inside it. Joggers should purchase whatever flashlight they are most comfortable carrying on their person. Personally I recommend the Lite-Lot 30x, which can be purchased from the nearest Home Depot for a reasonable $8.49. Remember, carrying a flashlight while jogging or bicycle riding can save lives. Both of the jogger or rider and of any oncoming jogger or rider who now see the first jogger or rider. Also, a well-lit bicycle path helps prevent crimes both misdemeanor and felony. So remember, bring a flashlight and help prevent collisions and/or armed assault. |
