First a question! Does the Bible have the perspective it does because of the society it was written in or is that society the nature it is because it is following the biblical teachings. The answer would be yes! The Bible was written in a paternalistic, patriarchal, male dominated society and so God is male and women are rarely considered or even counted (as in the feeding of the five thousand). And yet in more modern times (some would even say today) Many of the attitudes are still prevalent in society today, particularly among those who believe in the literalism of the Bible. These attitudes and ideas often lead to the trio of isms we are considering on this page:
Sexism: Surely in this day of equal opportunities and the recognition of women's rights this cannot be alive and well today. Some of the church simply reflects the mores of a large part of society. Why else, in the twenty first century do we have such a large body of people (sadly not just men) who oppose women priests and bishops, still see the male as the 'head' and still insist on using exclusive male language. It can still be heard said 'the Bible says that god is male so He is!!
Racism: In the formative years of the Jewish nation it was essential to be wary of strangers and intermarry and protect the nations identity to survive. Sadly many of these attitudes are still alive and well. It is true that the blatant racism of the 1960s may have become more subtle but there is a rise, in many countries, of racist parties and the 'us and them' attitude is still around. What is worse is the racism dominant in the church that will condemn the killings carried out by Palestine whilst ignoring or minimising worse atrocities by Israel. BUT it says in the Bible……… well it would it was written by the Children of Israel!!!
Homosexuality: The consistent, well almost, prejudice against anything different can be seen in this matter. Of course the Bible teaches against it, or does it? A number of good sites to read on the subject can be found at the bottom of this page. A comment I think worth repeating appeared recently on the Salvation Army discussion forum.
'The Bible does not speak of gays. Nor does it speak of the earth orbiting the sun. Sexual identity was not a concept of biblical times. It speaks of homosexual acts only when they are part of sacred prostitution, idolatry, promiscuity, seducing children, rape, or violating hospitality. It condemns all such acts, whether heterosexual, homosexual, or having nothing to do with sex. Of the thousands and hundreds of words, pages, stories, laws, and commandments in the Bible, very few deal with homosexual acts. A little study of history reveals these references are fewer than we have come to believe.'
I believe we should love and value everyone whatever their sex, race or sexuality. I can see none of these prejudices in the life of Jesus.
