ARNIS
- This form of weaponry self-defense using Yantok and other stick
substitutes is now an institution in the arena of martial arts
abroad but not here in the country is its place of origin. |
|
SIKARAN
- A pre-Spanish form of martial arts utilizing the legs 90 percent
of the time while the remaining ten percent hand activity is
focused on grabbing, throwing, parrying and blocking. |
|
KUNTAW
- Another ancient Muslim art of hand and foot fighting using hard
and soft forceful punches, kicks and chopping techniques guided by
scientific movements. During 14th century, Kuntaw was reportedly
considered a secret fighting art and being practiced only by the
royalty, hence sometimes it was referred to as Maharlika Kuntaw. |
|
DUMOG
- The Aetas of Negros and Panay were the originator of this
antiquated form of hand-to-hand combat or close quarter figthing.
Historians have claimed that Rajah Lapulapu and his men, who were experts
in unarmed combat, subdued the Spaniards by pinning down
Magellan's men with use of Dumog ground fighting or wrestling
techniques to finish the standing battle. |
|
UKBO BUNONG BRASO
- The generic name of homegrown art of toppling maneuves. Ukbo is
a Visayan-Hiligaynon root word meaning Uk (arm toppling) and Bo
(maneuvering techniques). Ukbo is an open gesture of a
gentleman-friendly sport where winning is secondary to
brotherhood, love and unity. |
|
STEALTH MARTIAL ARTS
- A recent Filipino innovation, this self-defense style believes
that martial arts is a sign language of thousand words and
characters and nature's activity particularly the movement of
animals, insects and flowers.
Dubbed the modern Kung Fu, STEALTH stands for Secrecy and Sneaky,
Trickery, Expedient, Agility, Leash, Tactics and Hedge. This was
developed and founded by martial artist Ulysses R. Domingo in
1995. |
|
AMATEUR FULL CONTACT
SPORTS
- Considered as a spectator sports, this is a recent Filipino
innovation in competitive fighting. Amateur Full Contact Sports
involves all the combative aspects of unarmed self-defense
techniques from sikara, dumog, kuntaw, dulac, wrestling and even
boxing.
Formulated by Grandmaster Jonathan "June" Abaya 1985, Full
Contact Sports is based in the original art of Jen-Tao, known as
Jendo.
As an amateur sports, FCS may one day be the Filipinos' contribution to
the list of Olympic games. And all indications point to that
direction. |
|
JENDO
- Another recent Filipino creation in the non-classical style of
Martial Arts, Jendo is based on the ancient oriental system of
discipline. Jendo means "The Economical New Fist Way" and
literally is an acronym for Jonathan or June the originator's
first name; Economical; N for New and the last two letters DO
stands for the Japanese word for Way (Tao in Chinese). |
|
DULAC
- Another recent Filipino style of fighting and is derived from
the movements of wild animals in breaking and dislocating the
enemy's joints. It's founder is another Filipino martial artist
Antonio Vasquez III. |
|
PANG-ORAN
- The development of Pang-Oran, another spectator sports, has been
credited to Punong Lakan Garitoni "Pet" Nicolas, president of the
Modern Arnis Mano-mano Filipino Martial Art.
Nicolas came up with the idea of fusing the techniques of arnis and full
contact sports after watching the tournament bouts himself. Since
the Pang-Oran has been given a name by Grandmaster Jonathan "June"
Abaya, founder and president of Philippine Full Contact
Self-Defense Federation (PFCSDF). It was Grandmaster Abaya's
mother who helped in coining Pang-Oran, Ilokano term for 'paluan'
or 'to strike'. |
