CULTURAL COURSES
Participants attending the 4-week or 6-week program at all levels must take ONE cultural course. An EXTRA cultural course may be taken for an additional fee, provided there is no timetable clash with the first course selected.
Cultural courses with less than eight participants will not be held. Where cultural courses are full, or not held due to insufficient interest, some participants may be required to follow their second or third choice.
Each cultural course requires a minimum of 12 hours class work, with the arts and craft courses in some cases demanding up to 14 hours work. The cultural courses are introductory in character.
GROUP A (Theoretical)
1. Ethnic and Religious Diversity in Indonesia (All levels)

Indonesia is a pluralistic society and ethnic and religious diversity impacts on the lives of many Indonesians. In this course, participants will be exposed to the culture of at least two different ethnic groups in Indonesia, the Javanese and one non-Javanese ethnic group. Participants will also be introduced to several religious communities in Indonesia. These include Islam, Christianity and Buddhism. Trips to ethnic and religious places, activities and exhibitions are part of this course. The dynamics of ethnic and religious interactions in shaping the present and future of Indonesia will be the focus of this course.
The course is given in English. Participants are required to write a short essay on a topic related to this option course.

2. Indonesian Women Studies (All levels)

This course gives an introduction to the development of feminism in Indonesia. It examines the role of Indonesian women in rural and urban societies with particular reference to traditional, religious, social and cultural aspects. The course also discusses women's organisations and women in the work force. There will be visits to places such as rural markets and factories where women play an important role in the economic activity. A couple of successful business women will be invited to give talks in the course. The course is given in English. Participants are required to write a short essay on a topic related to this option course.
3. Rural Life (All
levels)

This course is a study of rural society with emphasis on the impact of bureaucracy and new technology in the rural areas of Java. It also examines environmental problems resulting from over cultivation, industrialisation, etc.
Participants will have the opportunity to visit villages in the vicinity of Salatiga. Participants are required to write a short essay on a relevant topic. The course is given in English.

4. Business in Indonesia (All
levels)

This course provides the participants with a fundamental knowledge of business practice in Indonesia. it examines the structure of Indonesian business, Indonesian market and consumer behaviour, labour and industrial relations, financial systems in Indonesia, and small scale enterprise development.
Besides class discussions, there will be a field visit to a company or industrial area. The course is given in English. Participants are required to write a short essay on a relevant topic.

GROUP B (Practical)
1. Batik (All
levels)

The Batik Course offers a workshop introduction to the art of batik making and techniques of creating batik paintings. Materials (cloth, wax, dyes, canting) are provided free of charge.
This hands-on course is conducted in English and Indonesian and is suitable to all levels. Participants are required to write a short essay related to batik or traditional costumes of Indonesia.

2. Cooking (All
levels)

This a workshop in the art of preparing and cooking Indonesian cuisine. After familiarisation with basic culinary techniques, participants prepare several popular dishes. Basic materials (spices, ingredients, etc.) are supplied at no extra cost.
The course is conducted in English and Indonesian. Participants are required to write a short essay related to Indonesian food, health and nutrition.

3. Indonesian Dance (All
levels)

Participants will receive practical instruction in some of the basic movements of traditional or contemporary Indonesian dance. Participants in this course learn at least one dance chosen for mastery within the time available. The dance will be practiced to performance standard.
The course is conducted in Indonesian and English. Participants are required to write a short essay on a subject related to Indonesian dances or performing arts.

4. Pencak Silat (All
levels)

This course provides practical instruction in the Indonesian-style martial art of self defence, Pencak Silat. The course covers basic postures and modes of defence and attack. It is suitable for women as well as men and includes contact with the local Pencak Silat club. Participants are supplied with a Pencak Silat uniform to wear during practice. This uniform must be returned to the PIBBI Committee at the conclusion of the program.
The course is conducted in Indonesian and English . Participants are required to write a short essay on a topic related to Indonesian or Asian martial arts, rhythmic gymnastics, etc.
