PIBBI (Program Intensif Bahasa dan Budaya Indonesia) or Intensive Courses in Indonesian Language and Culture was established in 1973 as a joint project of the University of Sydney (Australia), Satya Wacana Christian University (Indonesia) and the Pusat Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Bahasa (Centre for Language Development - an office of the Indonesian Department of Education and Culture).

PIBBI, commonly known as The Salatiga Program, is a high quality intensive Indonesian language and culture program offering courses at the campus of Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia. As an in-country program PIBBI provides participants with the opportunity to learn and use Indonesian both in the classroom and in daily real-life communication with native speakers.

The general aims of the courses are to:

  • deepen participants' knowledge of the Indonesian language,
  • improve fluency in communicative skills,
  • present insights into some aspects of Indonesian culture through guided study
  • provide a stimulating direct contact experience with !Indonesian society.
Participants work towards these goals through five categories of study activity: language study, short Indonesian cultural courses, a field assignment, an excursion, and special seminars by invited speakers. Note that due to time restrictions the field assignment, the seminars and the short Indonesian Cultural Courses are not part of the study program for the 2-week course.

Language levels run from I (beginner) to V (near native speaker).
