      A Review by Sarah Mankowski

As a long-time reader of fantasy, I have often said that what I hope for most is something new. Take me somewhere I've never been before. Introduce me to characters I've never met before.
In her first novel, Torn, Jennifer Waller succeeds in some fascinating and unique world-building. The setting is contemporary suburbia. The heroine is a seemingly ordinary wife and mother, Maureen Banks, enjoying some time alone while husband and daughter visit family.
Her life suddenly changes when a mysterious man in black shows up from another realm. As the story unfolds Maureen not only learns about her past life in anther realm, but she must prepare for a battle against a diabolical mage named Jack. As she rediscovers magical powers and learns to fight, she learns about the history of these other realms.
A fascinating premise from a very promising author, I strongly recommend Torn to all who enjoy fantasy.
