HealthKirika has fairly good health.  When she first came home she had rat lice, but since then she has suffered no ailments.  As of December 2003 Kirika developed two mammary tumors, which were removed February 3, 2004.  Ki began to develop strange habits of falling off of things in May.  She was on medications for a respiratory infection, but only became worse.  She was unable to recover from it.

Temperament: Kirika is shy, but still friendly.  She loves to adventure, but becomes frightened very easily of loud noises and fast movements.  She chooses people she feels comfortable with as safe places, and will only relax with these people.  She loves to groom fingers and fingernails, but does not give kisses on the lips.  As she has gotten older she has gained the confidence necessary to become alpha rat of the cage.  She still only cuddles with certain people, but now will investigate any new humans who come to visit her.

Her StoryI decided to get a second rat as a companion for my first rat, Mara, as well as for myself.  I originally got in touch with Adria of Minnesota Rat Connection (MRC) about getting one from an upcoming show in Chicago.  I decided that I was not quite ready at that time because I was still in the dorms and would have no place to quarantine.  I later found a post on the rodentfancy.com forum about a girl who recently picked up a rat, which turned out to be pregnant.  I decided to get in touch with her and later made arrangements to get a female rat from her.

I went to Wyoming, MN on June 15, 2002 with my friend Jenny.  I was the first person to pick out a rat from her, so I was able to get any rat that I wanted.  I spent a lot of time with each of the rittens, but eventually settled on one who was curious about me, but also not incredibly hyper.  On the way home she pooped on Jenny's head...what a cutie.

I named her Kirika after the young assassin girl from the anime Noir.  It turned out to be the perfect name, since Kirika the rat turned out to be a shy, yet adventurous, kid.  Her hyper attitude and ability to climb up people's pants later earned her the nickname "Captain Insano."

She gets along wonderfully with all the other rats.  She likes to protect her family. Anytime someone squeaks...she's there to find out if they need help.  Kirika is the bodyguard of the world.

After Mara's death Kirika began to act quieter, almost depressed.  She spent almost all her time cuddling with me.  After celebrating her second birthday with me,  Atalie (my roommate and second mom), Aura, and Fox she began to become clumsy and uncoordinated.  At the end of May she became very ill and was brought to the vet twice in the same week.  I was hand feeding her food and water through an oral syringe with the hopes of keeping her strength up over the holiday weekend until I could get her to a vet.  She held on until I graduated from college and then passed away in my arms that evening.

I will love and cherish Ki-bean in my heart forever.
