Phoenix Ashes Rattery has specific policies regarding adopting.  Because my rats are meant to be loving companions, I want to know that they are going to homes where they will be taken care of and provided for.

If Interested

If interested in adopting either rescues or litters from PAR I require you to fill out a small questionnaire about rats.  It isn't a final exam, just something for me to read so I can understand you and your needs. If I see anything concerning I will suggest possible changes to insure the best care.  I do reserve the right to deny potential adopters for reasons including: using rats as feeders, planning on breeding for purposes of creating feeders, and not providing appropriate medical care when needed.  Once accepted, the potential adopter can be placed on a waiting list for a planned litter or make reservations on a current litter.

Follow the link below.  You can save a copy of the entire questionnaire and send to via email to me as an attachment.  Please fill it out in entirety, including your name, phone number, and email address so I can get a hold of you.

Potential Adopter Questionnaire

These questionnaires will be saved in my records, so repeat adopters will only have to do it once, but I do appreciate knowing of any changes you have made.

Reservations

Once the questionnaire is completed any animals you are interested in will be reserved for you until a scheduled pick-up can be made. I do not require any money down on a rat. Reservations can be made any time after babies are three weeks old. If you are looking for a certain type of personality let me know and I will try to aid in matching you with the perfect rat.  Reservations will begin with those people on the waiting list based on what type(s) and personalities of rats they are looking for.  I reserve the right to reserve rats further down the list at my discretion.  Once reserved, the hold will last as long as we remain in contact.  If contact is lost for an extended period of time, especially after the beginning "go home" date, I reserve the right to remove the reservation without warning and give the rat to someone else.

Adoption of rats can be made either at the rattery or at another discussed location.  I am willing to drive halfway between destinations, as long as they are less than two hours away.  I may be willing to drive further for an extended fee to pay for gas.  Please let me know of any needs that you have regarding pick up.  Please note, I do not ship animals and I will not send animals across country in rat caravans.  I want to meet you!

Adoption Fees

All rats will be adopted in same sex pairs unless the adopter can prove they currently have rats of that same sex, or altered (sterile) rats of the opposite gender.

Rescues:

$5.00 - 10.00 depending on age and health

Litters:

Companion only: $15.00 for one, $25.00 for a pair

Potential breeder*: $20.00 for one, $30.00 for a pair

*Unless specified, all rats will be adopted as companion only rats with a signed contract stating that fact.

If you have an interest in breeding please tell me of your plans.  I will adopt to both new breeders and veteran breeders if I agree with the reasons for breeding.  Rats assigned as potential breeders will be those from parents of the best health and temperament with known pedigrees at least two or three generations back.  Remember, we always want to improve the fancy rat!

Adoptions

Upon meeting, the adopter will need to sign an adoption contract with PAR and pay the adoption fee.

Unless specified, adopters will sign a companion only contract stating that they will not breed their new companions.  These contracts will be provided by me, but can be viewed with the links below (when provided).

Companion only contract

Potential breeder contract

Please bring a carrier or cage to take your new companions home in.  Cardboard is not a safe way to transport rats for a variety of reasons.  Think about the weather and the length of the trip home.  If it is going to be cold, be sure to provide plenty of warm blankets and potentially a warm water bottle.  If the trip is long and it is warm, plan on bring a water bottle with ice, as well as something to keep your new rats hydrated, such as grapes.

Guarantee

I will not adopt out rats that are known to be ill for any reason.  Adopters who have reserved rats will be alerted if their rat appears ill.  That rat will be treated at PAR and then adopted when he/she has recovered fully.  I will never lie to you about your companion's health.  If there is something to watch for, I will let you know.

I guarantee that my rats are healthy upon leaving PAR.  If an adopted rat becomes sick within two weeks of adopting I will gladly take the rat back to PAR and allow you to choose a new companion, as long as you quarantined your new rat as best you could.

I strongly urge all adopters to quarantine their new companions for two to three weeks in a separate building from any current rats you have.  This not only protects your old rats, but the new ones as well.
