Alberta Trip 2005 -- Critters page!
Here's a collection of the animals we saw at the photo workshop, and some that I saw after.  What's missing, is one really good elk shot...
I *think* this is a bear print... if so, it's the closest we got to one during the workshop.
These guys were all right near the road.  People driving by just above us in the little blizzard, had no idea this neat scene was just over the hill.  We piled out of the car, me with my umbrella stuck down my jacket... It was worth getting wet.
Mule deer, Kananaskis.
Pika at Beauty Creek.  We must have spent  half an hour hunting this little guy through the rock pile.  Eep!
Do you suppose they're on their honeymoon?
The last photo-workshop critter.  This coyote ran across the road behind us, and we backed up and shot from the car.  I got points for spotting him, as well as the distant-speck mountain goats, but the bear-shaped log was a disappointment...
I really like this shot.  It might have been a winner if I had had time to set up the tripod.  Somewhere north of Red Deer is a whole little herd of unusual "primitive" horses, who like to hang out in this stretch between trees and road.  Easily a half-hour's fun for a pack of photographers, but this is the only shot I got.   Oh well, no point crying over unclicked shutters...
Still not sure what kind of ground squirrel this is, but he was at Elk Island too.
Spot the Elk.  I had a day to explore Banff, and there were two in the river valley.  One was bugling away wonderfully: the thrilling voice of the wilderness.
This is rather a better distance for encountering elk...
Elk Island National Park  The bison all posed nicely, and this humungous moose ran across the road right in front of the car.
Frodo Johnstone.
No, there are no tigers in the Rockies.  Valley Zoo, Edmonton.
Irresistible neighbourhood kitty.
Charge on back through the Rockies pages by following the bison.  For a link to a page on one of my other hobbies, click on the deer at right.  Darwin Wiggett's website is here.
...What's with all the elk and charging animals...??  Go on, ask me the elk story....
